Buonfiglio the new Italian Olympic Committee boss ahead of Milan-Cortina Games
ROME (AP) — Luciano Buonfiglio, a canoe athlete at the 1976 Montreal Games, was elected president of the Italian Olympic committee (CONI) on Thursday to keep the body moving in the same direction ahead of next winter's Milan-Cortina Games.
The 74-year-old Buonfiglio, who has been president of the Italian Canoe and Kayak Federation since 2005, was the candidate supported by outgoing CONI president Giovanni Malagò.
Malagò, who is leaving the presidency after 12 years and three terms, remains president of the Milan-Cortina organizing committee.
Buonfiglio was elected in the first round after receiving 47 of the 81 votes.
Luca Pancalli, who led Italy's Paralympic Committee for a quarter century, received the remaining 34 votes.
Franco Carraro, the 85-year-old former International Olympic Committee member who ran as a peacemaker, didn't get any votes.
During his pre-vote speech, Carraro said he was 'very concerned' that Buonfiglio and Pancalli led groups of voters who were strongly opposed to each other but told his supporters that they were free to vote for either of those two candidates.
Buonfiglio was also a CONI vice president from 2013-18.

Al Hilal advances to Club World Cup round of 16 with 2-0 win over Pachuca
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Salem Aldawsari scored in the 22nd minute and Al Hilal beat Pachuca 2-0 on Thursday night to clinch a berth in the Club World Cup round of 16. Marcus Leonardo also scored for Al Hilal, the only team outside Europe and the Americas to advance out of group play. Al Hilal will next face English club Manchester City on Monday in Orlando, Florida. Aldawsari, attacking from the left, scored with the ball bouncing off his right foot and soaring over the head of Pachuca goalie Sebastian Jurado to the right side of the goal. Lavelle returns to the USWNT and scores in 4-0 win over Ireland
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) — Rose Lavelle scored in her first national team match of the year after ankle surgery and the United States defeated Ireland 4-0 on Thursday night. Avery Patterson, Sam Coffey and Alyssa Thompson also scored for the United States. Lavelle last played for the national team in December against the Netherlands. Patterson, making her third start for the national team, scored on a header off a short corner from Lavelle in the 18th minute. It was her first international goal. Coffey added a goal before halftime, with a shot that cut across to the far post. It was her third national team goal and second in the last three games.
