Mumbai court junks plea to summon 4 cops as additional accused in gangster encounter case
Additional sessions judge Prashant C Kale, in an order passed on July 7, ruled that there was insufficient material to issue summons against the four individuals, stating, 'There is no prima facie evidence against the other persons regarding an agreement between them and others to commit an illegal act or take actions in furtherance of the conspiracy.'
According to the prosecution, the four Haryana policemen were part of the team that tracked down and shot Gadoli in Mumbai's Airport Metro Hotel on February 7, 2016. However, the encounter was subsequently termed as 'fake' by Mumbai police.
Witness testimonies during the trial allegedly revealed their role as conspirators. The prosecution argued that they should be tried along with the eight already accused.
'Their role in the criminal conspiracy under Section 120B of the IPC became evident through witness statements. It is the court's duty to summon them and try them with the existing accused,' the prosecution had submitted.
However, the defence opposed the move, calling it an attempt to delay the trial. It contended that the names of these four individuals were already part of the chargesheet and no new material had surfaced during the trial to justify fresh action.
The court upheld the defence's stance and denied the plea, keeping the focus on the eight accused already facing trial, which includes five Haryana policemen and Gadoli's alleged girlfriend, former model Divya Pahuja.
Pahuja had spent seven years in jail before being granted bail. In a related development, she was shot dead in a Gurugram hotel room in January 2024.
Gadoli, a gangster from Gurugram, was allegedly lured into a trap with Pahuja's help and killed in what Mumbai police later described as a staged encounter.
The Mumbai police had arrested eight people in connection with the incident. Charges were framed and the trial began.
On Tuesday, the prosecution informed the court that evidence has been fully recorded, with 43 witnesses examined so far.

Assam Man Gets Death Sentence For Killing College Student Who Refused Marriage Proposal
Calling it a "rarest of rare" case, the judge said that life imprisonment would not be enough to serve justice A local court in Assam on Thursday sentenced a man to death for murdering a college student who had rejected his marriage proposal, in a crime that took place four years ago in August 2021. The District and Sessions Court in Dhemaji, led by Judge Ajay Faglu, found the accused, Rintu Sarma, guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 302 for murder, Section 307 for attempt to murder, and Section 324 for voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons. Nandita Saikia, a student of Moridhol College, was walking home with her father and a friend when Sarma, a fourth-grade employee at the same college, launched a violent attack with a machete. All three were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Nandita, who suffered severe injuries, was later shifted to a hospital in Dibrugarh, where she died five days later. Calling it a 'rarest of rare" case, the judge said that life imprisonment would not be enough to serve justice. 'Accordingly, the convict is sentenced to death for the offence of murder under Section 302 IPC and will be hanged by neck till death," the court said in its order. In addition to the death sentence, Sarma was given 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 307 IPC and fined Rs 10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in six more months in prison. Under Section 324, he received three years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 5,000 fine, with an extra three months in jail if the fine is not paid. The court heard 41 witnesses during the trial. Police submitted a 400-page chargesheet as part of the investigation. Kadapa faces gas supply disruption twice in 10 days in August
The city gas supply faced two brief disruptions within 10 days this month (August, 2025) after unauthorised civil works led to damage of the pipelines laid by THINK Gas (formerly AG&P Pratham), in Kadapa. The emergency response team swung into action to isolate the affected sections and restored supply in a short time, thus ensuring public safety and minimising inconvenience to the residents. The first disruption was at Maruti Nagar when a 20mm low-pressure pipeline was damaged during the drain works. The second incident was at Gangamma temple when a 32mm low-pressure natural gas pipeline was damaged during road excavation work. After the second incident, the company filed an official police complaint and also urged all contractors and civic works agencies to notify the municipal authorities in advance, through the 'Dial before you dig' number 1800 2022 999. The company's spokesperson said that the incidents are a failure of the contractors and executing agencies in notifying THINK Gas before commencing work or reporting the damage later. Damage to gas infrastructure due to negligent and unauthorised digging is a criminal offence punishable up to three years of imprisonment and fine of up to ₹25 crore under IPC Sections 285 and 336, the company cautioned.
