Lauryn Hill's Essence Festival moment was not for the clock-watchers. The eight-time Grammy winner stepped onto the Caesars Superdome stage in New Orleans at 2:30 a.m., hours later than scheduled, and wrapped just after 3:37 a.m.
The crowd had thinned, but that didn't stop the icon from delivering a full-out, heartfelt performance that fans loved. And the delay was reportedly not on her.
Essence has since taken accountability for a jam-packed lineup and late-running sets that pushed everything back. This included the legend's highly anticipated stage moment.
Despite the delay, Lauryn Hill showed up and showed out, reminding Essence Festival attendees why she remains an icon. The 'Doo Wop' singer made the set intimate and soulful.
On stage, Lauryn rocked a regal look: a black and white polka dot dramatic fit, complete with a signature head wrap and bold gold jewelry. She didn't just sing — she served neo-soul realness.
Social captures show her bantering with the crowd, taking song requests, and performing alongside her sons Zion and Joshua Marley. At one point, she admitted she hadn't rehearsed a requested song but gave it a go anyway – because that's what legends do. She also broke into 'Tell Him' after watching a fan mouth the lyrics.
Yes, Ms. Hill has a history of being late, and many of these moments have gone viral. But we're not here for the slander.
While several blog sites quickly posted stories about the late performance, many didn't tell the full story. And fans have come to the singer's defense.
One fan wrote on a People magazine post about the incident, 'This performance shows us that we can stop this type of rhetoric. It's tired.' Another wrote, 'They lying! The event was behind schedule.' One fan ignored the lateness and just gave Lauryn her flowers, commenting, 'I would have been right in the FRONT.'
Lauryn Hill is a legend. She's the moment – and will always take over a stage.

Country music superstar eager to perform for ‘rabid' fans at Mass. shows

After playing an acoustic tour last year, Lee Brice is looking to turn things up a notch when he plays for 'rabid' fans at several Massachusetts venues later this week. 'The country fans up there are so rabid. I love them. I mean they're crazy and so they always show up and they show up with bells on,' Brice told MassLive in a phone interview from his South Carolina farm home. 'We love playing up there.' The chart-topping, multi-platinum-selling country music sensation said his upcoming shows will be 'full on Lee Brice' as opposed to the intimate setting he created on his 'Me & My Guitar Tour' in 2024. 'This will be 'come out and kick the footlights out,'' Brice, a CMA and ACM award winner, said. The Grammy-nominated artist will play three shows in Bay State. Brice will play at South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset on Friday, Indian Ranch in Webster on Saturday and at Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis on Sunday. When he's not performing, Brice likes to spend some time eating at local seafood restaurants or hanging out by the lake at his friend's house in Lowell. 'We've been coming there for so long. We've been everywhere, man. You know if you want the best wings. He's like, well, 'we're gonna go over here if you want that, you know. But if you want some fish and chips, we're gonna go over here,'' Brice explained. 'So it's good stuff.' The shows will serve as a precursor to Brice's 'What You Know About Tour,' which starts Sept. 11 in Clearwater, Florida. The tour comes on the heels of Brice's latest singles — 'Cry' and 'Said No Country Boy Ever' — that both came out earlier in 2025. 'Said No Country Boy Ever,' a collaboration with The Traler Park, was released July 3 and is Brice's most recent song. Brice said the song came about during a separate writing session for another song. 'In the middle of the write, one of us just said, 'Said no country boy ever.' I said, 'Stop what we're writing now. This is what we're writing right now.' After writing the song, Brice called up his longtime friends who make up The Traler Park. They include Jamey Johnson, Jerrod Niemann, Randy Houser, Rob Hatch and Dallas Davidson. 'They've deemed this as The Traler Park, I guess, after all the years of us kind of raising hell,' Brice joked. 'We've done so much together over the years, but we've never all been on one song. And so I said, 'Boys, come on now. We need to all get on one song. Let's do it.' And so they were all in.' A mid-tempo country-rock track, 'Said No Country Boy Ever' lists everything that southern gentlemen could not live without from their mother's fried chicken to wide open pastures. However, the lyrics are presented ironically, as shown through the main chorus 'Said no country boy ever since we been around / Said no country boy ever since the beer's been iced down / I wish my baby's kisses didn't last so damn long (so damn long) / Said no country boy, country boy ever, yeah.' 'It kind of, really, became a cool thing, that song,' Brice said. 'We just love the song and I was just glad to have my boys on over me.' Brice, who has been making music since he was 10 years old, said writing and producing go 'hand-in-hand' for him — especially with a music career spanning roughly two decades. He joined a songwriting session at his home studio right after his MassLive interview. Brice expected to finish most of the track that same day. 'We'll record a lot of this song today,' the musician said. 'I'm kind of producing as I'm writing, even if it is just us and a guitar. But, it's nice to be in the studio to go ahead and get some of those parts out of your head while you're going.' Brice's songwriting chops have not only earned him more than 10 billion streams, they have also earned him a coveted spot at the Las Vegas Songwriters Festival. The country music superstar will participate in the four-day event at House of Blues Las Vegas inside Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino from Aug. 21-24. 'There's going to be so many songwriters that are a part of a lot of my songs through the years,' Brice explained. 'I'm thinking about just bringing them all up one by one and kind of have them be a part of whenever I play the song and they're playing it with me or singing a verse or whatever. So it's going to be a really interesting, cool, unique show.' Fans can expect to hear Brice perform hits from his catalog at the festival. Tickets starting at $69, can be purchased online. Meanwhile, tickets for the 'What You Know About Tour' are also on sale now. Country music legend known as ‘Miss Country Soul' dies at 85

Country music star Jeannie Seely has died at the age of 85. The country legend, dubbed 'Miss Country Soul,' died Friday, Aug. 1, at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee, as a result of complications from an intestinal infection, according to People. Seely had been battling health issues in 2025. She revealed in May that she was recovering from 'multiple' back surgeries and two emergency abdominal surgeries. The artist also spent nearly two weeks in the ICU and battled pneumonia on top of it. Seely began performing on local radio at age 11. After high school, she worked as a stenographer until she moved to California in 1961, People reported. She worked at a bank, but feeling called to music, she got a job as a secretary at Imperial Records. Seely has since been a staple in country music since the 1960s. She is best known for her Grammy-winning 1966 hit 'Don't Touch Me.' Her other most successful songs include 'A Wanderin' Man,' 'I'll Love You More (Than You'll Need),' 'Can I Sleep in Your Arms' and 'Lucky Ladies.' Seely also famously collaborated with Jack Greene in the late 1960s, producing the hit single 'Wish I Didn't Have to Miss You.' Seely was the first woman to host the Grand Ole Opry and she's appeared on the program more times than any other performer over nearly 60 years. Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce relationship takes center stage in new Chiefs doc after candid ‘New Heights' appearance

It was a September game day unlike any other in Chiefs Kingdom. At least that's how some associated with the team recall that fateful day on Sept. 24, 2023, when pop superstar Taylor Swift made an internet-breaking appearance at Arrowhead Stadium to support her boyfriend, star tight end Travis Kelce, with the early days of their relationship taking center stage in episode three of the ESPN docuseries 'The Kingdom,' currently streaming on ESPN+. 'I remember [Chiefs president] Mark Donovan, on a Friday afternoon, called me and told me that Taylor Swift was going to be coming to the game,' Lara Krug, the Chiefs' chief marketing officer, said in the program. 'I remember getting off the phone and looking out the window, being like, 'Huh, that's a big deal.'' Getty Images 7 Travis Kelce (r.) had told QB Patrick Mahomes (l.) earlier that week that Taylor Swift would be in attendance. Getty Images Krug went into Donovan's office, where the two comprehended the surreal situation. Advertisement 'Lara Krug walked into my office, closed the door and is like, 'Can I ask you a question?' And I'm like, 'Absolutely.' [She said], 'This isn't like normal, is it?' And I'm like, 'No, Lara, this is not normal,'' Donovan reflected. When game day against the Bears officially arrived, Swift — who had been linked to Kelce in the summer of 2023 — was featured on the broadcast in a suite with the tight end's mom, Donna Kelce. 7 Taylor Swift caught the game from a suite with Travis Kelce's mom, Donna (l.). Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, whom Kelce told about Swift earlier in the week, was awestruck on the sidelines, telling his pal, 'That's the first person I noticed. I didn't see anybody else.' Not long after the Chiefs took care of business with a resounding 41-10 victory, Swift and Kelce, both 35, exited the stadium together. 7 Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce stepped out publicly in October 2023. Together for roughly two years, Swift has supported Kelce at Chiefs games across the past two seasons, including the team's Super Bowl triumph in 2024 and their crushing championship defeat this past February. The 10-time Pro Bowler has also been there for Swift, joining her on the road at various stops during her blockbuster Eras Tour, which wrapped last December after a nearly two-year run. 7 Taylor Swift appeared on boyfriend Travis Kelce's podcast in August 2025. New Heights Podcast This past week, the 14-time Grammy winner sent the internet into a tailspin once again when she appeared on Kelce's 'New Heights' podcast with his older brother, Eagles legend Jason Kelce, to announce her 12th studio album, 'The Life of a Showgirl.' The album drops Oct. 3, weeks after Kelce kicks off his 13th season in the league. The Chiefs open against the Chargers in Week 1, an international clash in São Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 5.
