Prospecton infrastructure upgraded for resilience

The Citizen21-07-2025
THREE years on from the devastating April 2022 floods, eThekwini Municipality has transformed the crisis into an opportunity, launching a city-wide reconstruction programme with a focus on Prospecton Road, the Umlazi canal network, and the vital M4 transport route.

These vital routes, severely battered during the floods, are now at the heart of an ambitious 'build back better' strategy to create infrastructure capable of withstanding the realities of climate change.
Speaking on the progress, Vincent Ngubane, Director of the Disaster Management Directorate, highlighted the shift from emergency recovery to proactive resilience-building.
'Our mission goes beyond emergency response. It's about building a city that is prepared, protected, and proactive. Prospecton Road and the Umlazi Canal are no longer just being restored, they are being transformed into resilient defences protecting our communities and industries,' said Ngubane.
He added that Prospecton Road and Umlazi Canal, once overwhelmed, are now being fortified to protect homes, industries, and livelihoods. The M4 highway, a crucial link between Durban and the southern basin, which experienced landslides and washaways, is now being rebuilt to withstand extreme weather events. The newly designed sections feature reinforced embankments, upgraded stormwater drainage, and flood mitigation barriers.

Chief civil engineer in Roads Provision, Linga Govender, emphasised the municipality's adoption of advanced engineering techniques.
'These are not simple repairs. Prospection Road and the M4 are being rebuilt with future disasters in mind. The Umlazi Canal is being widened and reinforced to prevent the kind of catastrophic overflows we witnessed before,' said Govender.
The municipality has also placed community involvement at the centre of its recovery strategy, rolling out public education campaigns on disaster preparedness and integrating local knowledge into infrastructure planning. As part of its holistic disaster risk reduction approach, eThekwini is combining infrastructure upgrades with early warning systems, climate-smart urban planning, and community training programmes.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take part in community preparedness initiatives as eThekwini accelerates its journey towards becoming a climate-resilient metro.

Johannesburg Property Company condemns false allegations surrounding sale of green spaces and sports complexes

Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) has released a statement aimed at addressing community concerns, misinformation, and unfounded allegations circulating regarding JPC's intentions regarding the remaining portion of Portion 33 of Farm Braamfontein 53 IR. In it, the entity reaffirms there are no plans or intentions to sell, develop, or convert the park land for residential purposes, including low-cost housing, with the city remaining steadfast in its commitment to the preservation of natural environments and green spaces, for the benefit of current and future generations. The statement says that claims suggesting JPC intends to transform park land into low-cost housing are completely unfounded, and that these assertions stem from a council report that recommended initiating a public participation process, in accordance with Regulations 34 and 35 of the asset transfer regulations. This is a standard process, with transparent procedure, said to be designed to engage the community and gather input regarding the potential use of the land for sports, recreation, and other compatible purposes, consistent with its public open space zoning, which JPC says does not imply any intention to sell or develop the property. Also read: The Irish Club in Linden needs JPC to be responsive to the community The statement adds that the area designated for public participation encompasses approximately 18.3881ha, currently used for sports and community activities. Importantly, key sections of the park – including the dam, botanical gardens, City Parks depot, and Melville Koppies – are excluded from this process and will remain protected as vital ecological and recreational assets. It furthermore goes on to state that JPC categorically refutes any claims suggesting an intention to alienate the land to a designated developer, to address municipal financial challenges, as the city maintains a stable financial position, with transparent budgeting processes and prudent fiscal management. Also read: Office of the Mayor no shows at Marks Park meeting they called for JPC says it acknowledges and respects the community's attachment to these natural features and reiterates its commitment to their preservation. Their primary goal is the responsible management of natural assets, ensuring biodiversity, conservation, and sustainable development. The statement ended with the entity, together with the City of Johannesburg, denouncing any misrepresentations or false allegations aimed at damaging their reputation, or undermining their efforts to serve the community effectively. JPC says it remains open to constructive dialogue, and they invite community members to participate in the upcoming public consultation process. March leads to jobs for unemployed youth

Factories in Waltloo hired 40 unemployed young people from Mamelodi and Nellmapius on Tuesday. This after the youth took to the streets and marched to factories around Waltloo during the official launch of Sizosebenza Ngenkani campaign in Mamelodi. The campaign, which was launched by the civic movement Soil of Africa, is aimed at finding jobs for unemployed youth. According to Bongaan Ramontja of the civic movement, Sizosebenza Ngenkani means 'we are going to be employed and be given an opportunity to work, come what may'. Ramontja said they gathered at Solomon Mahlangu Square holding their CVs and marched to different factories to demand jobs. Soil of Africa was joined in its endeavour by the local political party known as Defend South Africa (DSA). Ramontja said the rate of unemployment in the country among the youth stands at 62.7 % and the aim of his organisation is to reduce this staggering number drastically, to at least 30%. 'We have approached a couple of factories and companies based in Waltloo area with the aim of making sure unemployed residents of Mamelodi and Nellmapius get employed,' he said. 'The campaign was a success as the factories agreed to hire the locals that we presented to them for employment.' He said the majority of the people being hired were women. The campaign was launched to fight poverty, unemployment and reduce the rate of unemployment among the youth. 'To all other companies and communities: We are coming, prepare yourselves,' he said. Soil of Africa was proud to confirm that the fight against unemployment continues. This follows after over 200 young people from Mamelodi recently participated in interview sessions with seven prominent companies in South Africa. Ramontja added that this formed part of a business and sales training learnership programme. 'The drive to reduce unemployment is very urgent.' Sizosebenza Ngenkani will march to the N4 Gateway on Monday, July 28 to demand job opportunities for the community of Mamelodi and Nellmapius. Do you have more information about the story?
