Person in custody after shooting outside Broward County strip club, sheriff's office says
Broward County Sheriff's deputies got a call for a shooting just before 6 a.m. outside the Playhouse Gentlemen's Club in West Park.
West Park resident Mark Young got a call from a friend about it. He told CBS News Miami this isn't the first time he's heard about a shooting in his town.
"Here we go again," Young said. "It's a shame we have to live in fear."
Deputies were seen canvassing the area early Saturday morning, where several damaged cars were seen in the parking lot and towed away. Deputies took one person into custody. Young said it's a bad look for the area.
"It's kinda really scary," he said. "People [are] just afraid to come by this here area."
Investigators are still looking into what led up to the shooting, and there's no word yet on whether anyone was hurt.
The area was taped off for hours in the morning along West Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Young told CBS News Miami he's not the only resident who isn't comfortable in this part of town.
"They are very concerned, they are very afraid to even pass by here because you don't know what's gonna happen," Young said.
CBS News Miami has reached out to the Playhouse Gentlemen's Club and has not gotten a response.
The scene has cleared up, and the club is open again. CBS News Miami has followed up with the sheriff's office, asking if there are any other suspects.

3 officers wounded after gunman opens fire in ‘ambush situation' in Ohio, police say
An armed man lying in wait on a dead-end street shot and wounded two Ohio police officers when they parked their patrol vehicles in an undeveloped industrial park to eat lunch Wednesday, and an officer driving into the scene in response to their call for help also was shot and seriously injured, officials said. The shooter 'was shot on scene and was pronounced deceased,' said Michael Failing, the acting police chief in Lorain, about 25 miles west of Cleveland. The man 'had an arsenal of weapons with him,' said Failing, who did not share further details on that and noted that the available information about the shooting was preliminary. James Welsh, the police chief in nearby Elyria whose department is investigating what happened, told reporters earlier that Lorain officers were ambushed by a man firing a high-powered rifle, and that police returned fire. Welsh said it wasn't immediately clear if the suspect, a 28-year-old Lorain man whom Welsh and Failing did not name, was killed by the officers or shot himself. Welsh said the man is believed to have acted alone. Two of the officers suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Failing said. They were in critical condition after being flown to a trauma center, according to a statement issued by the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police hours after the shooting. The other officer was shot in the hand and was treated at a local medical facility, Failing said. He said the ambushed officers had just bought a pizza and parked side by side to eat in their vehicles. Responding officers loaded the wounded into patrol vehicles and rushed them to get medical care, he said. Authorities shared no details Wednesday about what might have motivated the shooting. 'It's a tragic day in the city of Lorain, but we're a strong city, and we're going to move forward,' Mayor Jack Bradley said. He said officers will be offered counseling to help process what happened. Bradley also said he'd spoken with Gov. Mike DeWine, who offered support. In a separate statement, the governor said the shooting 'reminds us that those who work in law enforcement risk their lives every day for the safety of their communities.'

Flight Attendant Who Filmed Girls in Airplane Lavatory with Hidden Phone Sentenced to 18.5 Years
A flight attendant accused of taping his phone to the airplane toilet's lid to film young girls has been sentenced to 18 and a half years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Former American Airlines flight attendant Estes Carter Thompson III was arrested and charged with one count of attempted sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of child pornography depicting a prepubescent minor in 2024. He was arrested in Lynchburg, Va., in January 2024, and plead guilty to the charges in March. He was sentenced in Boston on Wednesday, July 23. Police alleged he had recordings of a 14-year-old and four other girls ages 7, 9, 11, and 14, that were recorded over a nine-month period, The Associated Press reports. AI-generated child sexual abuse images and more than 50 images of a 9-year-old girl who was flying as an unaccompanied minor were also discovered on his iCloud account, reports. His setup, which involved concealing his iPhone beneath a warning sticker that read "seat broken" on the plane's toilet, was discovered by a 14-year-old girl on a flight bound for Boston on Sept. 2, 2023. She snapped a photo of the setup and showed her father, who confronted Thompson. Boston U.S. District Court Judge Julia Kobick called his behavior "appalling" and said child victims' "innocence has been lost" because of his actions. Thompson apologized in court Wednesday, describing his actions as "selfish, perverse and wrong." Thompson, 37, a resident of Charlotte, N.C., was arrested in 2024 after authorities said a 14-year-old girl on his flight discovered his secret recording setup in the bathroom. 'We take these allegations very seriously. They do not reflect our airline or our core mission of caring for people,' the airline said in a statement at the time, per NBC News. Thompson will serve his sentence at FMC Butner in North Carolina and intends to undergo sex offender-specific treatment, the outlet reports. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? American Airlines still faces a civil lawsuit in Texas from the family of one of Thompson's victims. Paul Llewellyn, whose law firm Lewis & Llewellyn is representing the child's family, told 'We are pleased that the perpetrator has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term so that he can no longer prey on young girls." Llewellyn's statement continued, 'But no family should ever have to endure what these families have gone through.' Read the original article on People

Indigenous teen's killer appeals verdicts and sentence
One of the men found guilty of killing an Indigenous teenager, who was chased into bushland and violently bashed, is appealing his convictions and sentence. Cassius Turvey, a Noongar Yamatji boy, died in hospital 10 days after he was deliberately struck to the head with a metal pole in Perth's eastern suburbs on October 13, 2022. Jack Steven James Brearley, 24, and Brodie Lee Palmer, 30, were sentenced to life behind bars for murdering the 15-year-old after a 12-week trial in the West Australian Supreme Court. Mitchell Colin Forth, 27, who was also accused of Cassius's murder, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to a total 12 years' imprisonment, eligible for parole after serving 10 years. He has since lodged legal challenges against his convictions and manslaughter sentence imposed by Chief Justice Peter Quinlan. The guilty verdicts were unreasonable and unsupported, and the nine-year sentence for manslaughter was excessive given the circumstances, court documents said. Forth, who was convicted of six offences, was also given cumulative terms of one year and two years for two counts of deprivation of liberty committed on October 9 against two other youths. Forth will be eligible for parole in January 2033 after his sentence was backdated to January 2023. His other convictions for two counts of assault and stealing are for offences committed on October 9 and 13, for which he was handed concurrent sentences totalling five years and two months. Brearley delivered the fatal blows on Cassius while "hunting for kids" because somebody had smashed his car windows. He chased Cassius into bushland and knocked the teen to the ground and hit him in the head with a metal pole, causing bleeding in his brain that led to his death. When delivering the sentences for the three men in June, Justice Quinlan said the trio had cut Cassius's life short in a horrendous and vengeful act of aggression, violence and brutality. He said Forth was never the main offender in the shameful course of events but always there in the background. "You were just following along in the excitement of trying to be a tough guy," the judge said. "And you followed Mr Brearley all the way to a conviction for manslaughter." Brearley will be eligible for parole after serving 22 years and Palmer after serving 18 years. 13YARN 13 92 76 Lifeline 13 11 14
