Future of Mobility Forum explores leading experiences in reshaping aviation, automotive industries
As part of the World Governments Summit (WGS), the Future of Mobility Forum convened global leaders and experts to explore the cutting-edge advancements transforming the aviation and automotive industries. With a focus on sustainability and emerging technologies, the forum provided an in-depth look at how mobility is being reshaped for the future.
During his opening remarks, Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), emphasised the critical role of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of transportation. He said governments around the world are moving toward emission-free transportation solutions. The European Union aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 90% by 2040, while also embracing autonomous mobility technologies to cut traffic accidents by 70%.
Studies indicate that integrating AI into transportation infrastructure can reduce traffic congestion by 30% and decrease travel time in major cities by 25% by 2035, noted Al Tayer.
'Thanks to the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, the emirate has been at the forefront of digital transformation and AI adoption,' said Al Tayer.
Dubai Autonomous Transportation Strategy was launched with aims to transform 25 percent of the total transportation in the emirate to autonomous mode by 2030.
The journey began with the launch of the 90-kilometer Dubai Metro, the world's longest driverless metro system, in 2009. The metro network is set to expand further with the Blue Line, adding 30 kilometers.
Al Tayer also noted Dubai's significant strides in aerial taxi services, with work underway on the first takeoff and landing stations near Dubai International Airport ahead of the launch in 2026.
Additionally, the city continues to expand its eco-friendly public transportation, serving nearly 2 million passengers daily. Smart traffic systems, which have been widely implemented, brought 60% improvement in incident detection, 30% faster response, and 20% shorter travel time.
Dubai aims to make taxis and limousines fully electric or hydrogen-powered by 2040, and by 2050, public buses will be completely emission-free.
'Our focus is on providing sustainable and flexible mobility options that enhance convenience, including the implementation of the 20-minute city concept, ensuring that 80 percent of essential services are accessible within a 20-minute commute,' said Al Tayer.
In a speech, Milojko Spajić, Prime Minister of Montenegro, highlighted the importance of global cooperation in fostering next-generation mobility solutions and ensuring that emerging technologies contribute to inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
The first panel discussion, 'Reinventing the Wheel: The Automotive Industry's Disruptive Era,' addressed the major shifts in the global automotive industry. Moderated by Anna Stewart of CNN, the session featured Shilpan Amin, President of General Motors International; and Lê Thị Thu Thuy, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup & Executive Chairwoman of Vinfast Auto Ltd. Panelists explored how Chinese automakers are reshaping global competition with innovation and supply chain efficiency, the rapid adoption of autonomous and software-defined vehicles, and the growing influence of Big Tech in the automotive ecosystem. They debated the future of powertrains, the potential for fully autonomous driving, and the response of traditional automakers to these disruptions.
Another session, 'The Future of Automotive Personalization,' examined how premium vehicle brands are leveraging technology to stand out in an evolving market. Led by moderator Tio Charbaghi, Co-founder and Partner at Fifth Delta, the session featured Faisal Sultan, Vice President and Managing Director of Lucid Motors, and Ferdinand Porsche, CEO of F.A.T. International. The panelists explored the growing demand for bespoke features, the intersection of high-end design and cutting-edge engineering, and ways that personalization will shape the future of electric vehicles.
The forum also discussed aviation innovation in 'Beyond the Skies: Transforming Flights of Tomorrow.' Moderated by Anna Stewart of CNN, the panel featured Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of Flydubai, and Roberto Alvo, CEO of LATAM Airlines Group. The discussion centered on the role of AI in optimizing airline operations, the adoption of sustainable fuels, and the emergence of electric and hybrid aircraft. The session also explored how airlines are adapting to the evolving regulatory frameworks and how partnerships with manufacturers are driving industry-wide innovation.
Throughout the forum, industry leaders underscored the need for collaboration between governments, technology firms, and mobility providers to drive sustainable and inclusive innovation. As mobility continues to evolve, forums, as part of the WGS's future-oriented agenda, play an active role in facilitating gatherings that enable industries and governments to shape policies, foster partnerships, and accelerate the adoption of next-generation technologies.

Dubai's RTA begins major roadworks project to run through the summer
The transport authority in Dubai has begun work to improve traffic in the emirate at 40 locations over the summer period. The first phase of the work will cover 22 major streets, nine school zones, more than five development areas, and several internal roads in the Tolerance District, Al Khawaneej 2 and Nad Al Sheba, stated the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The roadworks will be carried out to 'minimise disruption to daily traffic flow', the RTA said in a statement released on Sunday. The next phase will include traffic enhancements at locations such as Jumeirah Village Circle towards Hessa Street, Ras Al Khor Road, Al Thanya Street, and King Salmanbin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street. Additional improvements are to be made to Al Meydan Street, Al Sa'ada Street, Al Asayel Street, and the junction of Al Wasl Street with Al Manara Street. The RTA is also undertaking roadworks at nine school zone locations including upgrades at the Al Warqa 1 school complex, the construction of an additional bus entrance at Gems Education in Al Warqa 3, the widening of access and exit points around The English College in Al Safa 1 on Sheikh Zayed Road, and the installation of a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing on Al Seedaf Street in Al Barsha 1. Work is also being carried at 'five major development zones' as a result of the emirate's population growth and booming economy, the RTA said. This includes the construction of a direct access route to Al Muhaisnah labour camps from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, upgrades to Al Mustaqbal Street (Brookfield) for improved access to newly developed residential communities, better connectivity between Al Khail Road and Al Asayel Street via Al Marabea Street, and enhancements at Nad Al Hamar junction near Lootah Mosque. Additionally, new parking facilities will be developed to serve the Zayed Educational Complex in Oud Al Muteena 1. Internal roadworks will also be carried out in areas including Tolerance District, Al Khawaneej 2, Jebel Ali Industrial 1, Nad Al Sheba, and Al Warqa. Pedestrian walkways will also be constructed in Al Quoz Creative Zone to 'improve pedestrian safety'.

Sheikh Khaled clears Dhs4.62b housing benefits for 3,052 citizens
Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has approved a housing benefits package worth Dhs4.62 billion, benefiting 3,052 Emirati citizens across the emirate. The approved housing benefits package includes housing loans amounting to Dhs4.4 billion benefiting 2,862 citizens, and exemptions from housing loan repayments totalling Dhs212 million benefiting 190 citizens, limited-income retirees and beneficiaries of deceased citizens. The disbursement of the second housing package of 2025 comes ahead of Eid Al Adha and reflects the leadership's ongoing commitment to comprehensive development, enhancing the well-being and stability of Emirati families, empowering them to actively contribute to the nation's progress, in line with UAE Year of Community objectives aimed at strengthening social cohesion and reinforcing community solidarity. This package brings the total housing benefits delivered to citizens in Abu Dhabi in 2025 to Dhs11.38 billion. Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abu Dhabi Housing Authority, said, 'The new housing benefits package reflects the leadership's commitment to empowering citizens through the provision of quality housing that promotes family stability and elevates quality of life. Eid Al Adha in UAE: Free parking, revised public transport timings; full guide
With a four-day weekend being announced across the UAE for Eid Al Adha this year, residents are flying out and planning activities with their families. Also known as the 'Festival of Sacrifice,' the holiday commemorates the act of faith and is generally a time for prayer, reflection, and generosity. Here's the latest on revised parking and public transport timings across emirates: Abu Dhabi Parking and toll fees are typically free in the capital on Sundays and official holidays. On June 4, the emirate's Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has announced that bus services will operate according to the weekend and public holiday schedule. There are additional trips on regional and intercity routes. The Abu Dhabi Link service will continue to operate as usual, from 6am to 11pm. Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Express bus service will be available from 6am until midnight. Dubai Public parking will be free to use from June 5 to 8 in Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority announced. Multi-level parking terminals will remain a paid service during the holiday. The authority also announced public transport timings for the holiday. Dubai Metro will run from 5am to 1am (next day) from Wednesday, June 4, to Saturday, June 7. Salik PJSC, Dubai's toll operator, will implement variable road toll pricing on all four days of the Eid El Adha holiday, including Sunday (June 8; third day of Eid al Adha). Sharjah Sharjah has announced free parking from June 6 to June 8 during the Eid Al Adha holiday, the Sharjah Municipality stated on June 4. This exemption does not apply to the seven-day paid public parking zones, which are operational throughout the week and official holidays, and identified by the blue parking information signs. Ajman will offer free public parking from June 5 to 8, with regular fees resuming on June 9.
