BSE, other capital market stocks slide up to 5% after report flags possible weekly expiry curbs by Sebi

Economic Times4 days ago
Capital market stocks came under notable selling pressure on Tuesday, falling up to 5%, following reports that India's market regulator may be planning tighter controls to address speculative trading activity.
ADVERTISEMENT Investor sentiment turned cautious after concerns emerged around potential curbs on weekly expiry derivatives, a move seen as an attempt to dampen short-term speculation.
After these reports, the shares of BSE took the sharpest hit, falling 5% to their day's low of Rs 2,360, followed by Angel One shares, which tumbled 3%. Meanwhile, the shares of CDSL and Motilal Oswal slid by 1.9% and 1.1% respectively.
According to a report by Zee Business, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is reportedly exploring a series of regulatory changes, including limiting the frequency of weekly expiries. This could mean shifting from the current weekly expiry format to a bi-monthly or even monthly cycle. The proposal is part of a broader consultation effort aimed at reducing the pace of speculative trades in the options market. The report cited sources familiar with the matter, adding that the Ministry of Finance is also involved in these discussions and has flagged concerns that the current weekly expiry framework may be contributing little to long-term economic value.
ADVERTISEMENT Among the other ideas being considered, SEBI is also evaluating adjustments to the margin framework. This includes raising margin requirements for options trading while simultaneously easing margin obligations for cash market trades.Another proposal under review is a potential tweak to the Securities Transaction Tax (STT). Officials are reportedly mulling a hike in STT on options trading to curb excessive speculation and a parallel cut in STT on cash market trades to incentivize more stable participation.
ADVERTISEMENT However, Zee Business noted that any move on STT may only be feasible after the Union Budget next year. The developments align with earlier remarks from SEBI whole-time member Ananth Narayan, who, just last month, voiced concerns over the overwhelming share of short-term F&O contracts in overall market volumes. He indicated that the regulator is considering long-term structural reforms to improve the quality of the derivatives market. This includes exploring longer-tenure contracts and more diversified product offerings to shift focus away from purely speculative bets.
ADVERTISEMENT The regulatory introspection comes at a time when SEBI's own studies point to rising risks for retail participants in the F&O space.A study released on July 7 revealed that while the number of unique individual traders in the derivatives market dropped by 20% year-on-year, it still remained 24% higher than two years ago. Notably, the sharpest drop was observed among traders with a total turnover of less than Rs 1 lakh, even though this segment simultaneously saw the largest addition of new retail investors compared to 2023.
ADVERTISEMENT SEBI's study also showed that net losses for retail participants widened by 41% year-on-year to Rs 1,05,603 crore in FY25 from Rs 74,812 crore in FY24, after factoring in transaction costs. The proportion of retail investors incurring losses remained consistently high, with 91%, roughly 9 out of every 10, ending up in the red, in line with previous findings.

ELSS funds: A holistic view

Equity-Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS) remain among the most popular and effective tax-saving instruments available to retail investors in India. These offer a unique combination of tax benefits and long-term capital appreciation through equity exposure, making them a compelling option to balance tax planning with wealth creation. Under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, investments of up to Rs 1.5 lakh made during the fiscal year in ELSS funds are entitled to tax deductions. This directly reduces the investor's taxable income, offering tangible annual savings. For investors in the highest income tax slab of 30%, this deduction can result in potential tax savings of up to Rs 46,800. However, it is essential to note that these benefits are available only under the old tax regime. Taxpayers opting for the new regime, introduced with lower slab rates and fewer exemptions, cannot claim deductions under Section 80C, including those related to ELSS schemes continue to attract investors owing to their equity-linked returns and relatively low lock-in periods - the shortest among all Section 80C-eligible instruments. Traditional investment options, such as Public Provident Fund (PPF) and National Savings Certificate (NSC), also offer security and fixed returns, but come with longer lock-in periods and lower returns. Prior to investing, understanding the lock-in mechanism of ELSS funds is critical. For lumpsum investments, the three-year lock-in begins from the date of the transaction. For example, a one-time investment made on March 31, 2023, would become eligible for redemption on or after March 31, 2026. However, when investing through a SIP, each instalment is treated as a separate investment. Consequently, each monthly contribution carries its own three-year lock-in period, following the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) rule. While this might add complexity to redemption planning, SIPs help investors average out their purchase cost over time—with rupee-cost averaging—which reduces the impact of market that ELSS funds mainly invest in equities, returns are not guaranteed. They can move up based on economic cycles, regional trends, and broad market movements. However, historic data reveals that long-term investors, especially those with a five-year or greater investment horizon, have often earned greater returns than traditional fixed-income tax-saving instruments. This long-term investment horizon helps absorb short-term market fluctuations and increases the possibility of procuring attractive, inflation-adjusted gains. ELSS funds offer investors the option to choose between growth and dividend payout modes. While the former option allows funds to accumulate and compound over a period of time, the dividend payout option enables investors to procure regular income during the lock-in period- an attractive feature for those who require partial liquidity, without redeeming the entire investment. ELSS funds bring with them certain disadvantages. The primary drawbacks comprise risks linked to market volatility or those that accompany long-term bear markets, indicating a broad sense of pessimism among investors and a probable impending economic slowdown or recession. These definitely impact the equity markets, hence ELSS returns. Also, the compulsory lock-in period of three years could prove inefficient for some investors. Furthermore, long-term capital gains that surpass Rs 1 lakh are subject to taxation. For individuals with a medium-to-high-risk appetite, ELSS serves as an excellent entry point for investment in the equity markets. A disciplined investment approach is triggered owing to the lock-in period, and this brings with it the ability to create a meaningful corpus over time. In addition, professional fund management, diversification across sectors, and the supervision and monitoring of processes by market regulator Sebi, add layers of transparency and risk mitigation to the investment should assess their financial goals, investment horizon, and risk tolerance before investing in ELSS funds. Although investor preferences can be affected by recent changes in LTCG taxation and the emergence of alternative instruments, ELSS stands out for its capacity for wealth creation over the long term, relatively low lock-in period, and suitability for SIP-based investment. With a disciplined approach and a long-term perspective, ELSS can serve as the foundation of an investor's tax plan and equity investment strategy to reduce tax liability when creating wealth in a structured manner. ‘Tilak Pravesh Dwar' to enhance Ayodhya's spiritual stature

Lucknow/Ayodhya: The UP govt is building an entrance gateway, 'Tilak Pravesh Dwar', on the Panchkosi Parikrama marg in Ayodhya . Located near the sacred Hanuman Gufa, the Rs 1.89 crore project is being executed by the Ayodhya Development Authority as part of the UP govt's broader vision for the city. Nearly 60% of the construction work is already complete. Far beyond being a mere architectural structure, the gateway is envisioned as a powerful emblem of Ayodhya's rich spiritual heritage, religious grandeur and cultural pride, officials said. Designed to offer a majestic and spiritually enriching entry to devotees undertaking the Panchkosi Parikrama, the gate will combine classical temple architecture with modern construction techniques, showcasing Ramayana-era elements, traditional craftsmanship and religious symbolism. The gateway is expected to elevate Ayodhya's image not only as a spiritual centre but also as a vibrant hub of tourism and cultural beautification. The surroundings will be adorned with an impressive façade, intricate stone carvings, sculpted pillars, thematic lighting, and lush landscaping. Special focus is being placed on quality and aesthetics to ensure the gate becomes a prominent landmark and attraction for visitors. Commenting on the project, vice-chairman of the Ayodhya Development Authority, Ashwini Pandey said, "The Tilak Pravesh Dwar will significantly enhance the city's spiritual stature and will also be an architectural marvel. Every effort is being made to complete it on time and dedicate it to the public ahead of upcoming religious festivals. " Once completed, the gateway will serve as a new spiritual and visual landmark, inspiring awe in the lakhs of devotees and tourists who travel the Panchkosi Parikrama route every year, officials said. Beyond the Core: Luxury Finds a Stronghold in Emerging NCR Pockets

NewsVoir Delhi-NCR [India], August 8: For long, luxury housing in NCR was synonymous with legacy addresses Lutyens' Delhi, Golf Course Road, or DLF Phase V, where prestige was tied to postcode. However, a growing wave of demand is now sweeping across emerging corridors like the Dwarka Expressway, SPR Road, Sector 150 in Noida, Siddharth Vihar in Ghaziabad, Yamuna Expressway, FNG Corridor, and Neharpar in Faridabad. These locations are on the radar of HNIs and UHNIs seeking modern living, expansive layouts, and better value. With infrastructure catching up and lifestyle aspirations evolving, luxury is moving beyond the core. As per the CBRE-ASSOCHAM report, Delhi-NCR has witnessed sales of 3,960 luxury homes, each costing Rs 6 crore and above, during the January-June period, an increase of more than three times on an annual basis. Meanwhile, according to the CREDAI and CRE Matrix Pan India report, India's housing market witnessed a sharp surge in FY25, with tier I cities recording record-high primary housing sales worth Rs. 6,70,000 crore (US$76.53 billion), marking a 96% jump compared to FY22. Delhi NCR's residential market, especially in Gurugram, recorded a 313% surge in sales value from FY22, touching Rs. 1,70,000 crore (US$19.42 billion). The shift towards high-value properties and sustained buyer demand underscores changing real estate investment trends across India's top cities. Besides, several factors are converging to drive this shift beyond the core, and infrastructure has been the biggest catalyst. Projects like the Delhi-Meerut RRTS, Dwarka Expressway, Noida International Airport, and the KMP Expressway are dramatically improving intercity and intra-city mobility, making once-overlooked locations far more accessible. This, in turn, has allowed developers to reimagine luxury living on a larger canvas. Ishaan Singh, Director, AIPL said, "As the city grows outward, the definition of luxury is being rewritten. Luxury today is about a balance between nature, technology, and convenience. Sectors along Dwarka Expressway are being recognised for their connectivity and serene surroundings. As developers, we see the location as a blank canvas to introduce mindfully crafted luxury offerings that appeal to a new-age buyer looking beyond traditional neighbourhoods." Unlike older neighbourhoods constrained by legacy layouts and limited land, several new micro-markets are carving out a distinct identity within NCR's luxury landscape. While Dwarka Expressway, with its proximity to the IGI Airport, is witnessing a surge in high-end gated townships designed for the globally mobile elite, SPR is gradually shaping into a natural extension of Golf Course Extension Road, attracting premium residential and mixed-use developments. In Noida, Sector 150 stands out for its low-density, wellness-oriented planning. Developers like Prateek Group are redefining the sector's luxury narrative through its luxury project Prateek Canary in the region and fulfilling the evolving requirements of homebuyers. Similarly, in Siddharth Vihar, Ghaziabad, the group's premium offering responds to a growing appetite for aspirational living backed by infrastructure and accessibility. Simultaneously, other leading developers like Pyramid and Chintamanis continue to strengthen their foothold along the Dwarka Expressway and SPR. On the other hand, KREEVA and Landmark Group are steadily building their presence with an ultra-luxury pipeline in fast-rising zones of Gurugram. Vikas Dua, Founder & Director, Chintamanis, says, "HNIs and UHNIs are no longer bound by legacy addresses; they're driven by lifestyle metrics. Emerging markets like Dwarka Expressway offer the right mix of liveability and future appreciation. The sentiment is shifting from buying into a brand location to buying into a future-ready lifestyle, and that's where the opportunity lies." Ashwani Kumar, Pyramid Infratech, says, "Gurugram's emerging micro-markets, be it along SPR, Dwarka Expressway, or sectors bordering them, are quickly stepping out of the shadow of the city's core. These zones are no longer peripheral; they're high-growth corridors backed by planned infrastructure, expanding social fabric, and increasing investor interest. Hence, we see these areas as the future of aspirational housing - where modern design, connectivity, and long-term appreciation converge to create next-generation investment opportunities." Therefore, as infrastructure expands and connectivity deepens, these micro-markets offer a rare blend of space, planning, lifestyle features, and future appreciation - elements that today's evolved homebuyers actively seek.
