Gov't Has No Plans To Change Bank Rakyat Status To Commercial Bank
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The government has no plans to change the status of Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Bhd (Bank Rakyat) from a cooperative bank to a commercial bank, says Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. He said that for now, Bank Rakyat remained a cooperative bank and any decision to change its status would depend on its members as well as other procedures. 'It involves several levels of approval if it were to transition to a commercial bank, first through a general meeting of members, secondly, Bank Rakyat is also subject to the Central Bank of Malaysia Act under Bank Negara (BNM). 'In addition, part of the process would need to go through the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM). What I can confirm is that Bank Rakyat remains a cooperative bank... there are no plans yet in that direction (to convert into a commercial bank),' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. He explained the matter after Dr Radzi Jidin (PN-Putrajaya) interjected to seek clarification regarding media reports on the intention of making Bank Rakyat a commercial bank. Meanwhile, Ewon said the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry (KUSKOP) would establish a regulatory body and appropriate legal framework for the accreditation of social enterprises (SE) under Phase 2 of the Malaysia Social Entrepreneurship Action Plan 2029 (SEMy2030) for the 2026 to 2030 period. He said the SE rating process had been introduced since 2019 and was still being implemented. 'As of August 2025, there are 520 business entities, including MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) and cooperatives that have been accredited as SE under three levels, namely Accredited Social Enterprise ( Basic Social Enterprise (SE.B) and Tunas Social Enterprise (Tunas SE),' he said. On veterans' cooperatives, Ewon said that in 2024, a total of 82 veterans' cooperatives were registered with SKM, involving 9,059 members, with accumulated share capital amounting to RM2.5 million, total assets of RM10.3 million and earnings valued at RM696,470.

White House starts TikTok account as platform in US legal limbo
The White House account had about 4,500 followers an hour after posting the video. Trump's personal account on TikTok meanwhile has 110.1 million followers, though his last post was on Nov 5, 2024 – Election Day. — Reuters WASHINGTON: The White House launched a TikTok account on Aug 19, as US President Donald Trump continues to permit the Chinese-owned platform to operate in the United States despite a law requiring its sale. "America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?" read a caption on the account's first post on the popular video sharing app, a 27-second clip. The account had about 4,500 followers an hour after posting the video. Trump's personal account on TikTok meanwhile has 110.1 million followers, though his last post was on November 5, 2024 – Election Day. TikTok is owned by China-based internet company ByteDance. A federal law requiring TikTok's sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump's inauguration on January 20. But the Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media and who has said he is fond of TikTok, put the ban on pause. In mid-June Trump extended a deadline for the popular video-sharing app by another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States. That extension is due to expire in mid-September. While Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, he reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform – which boasts almost two billion global users – after coming to believe it helped him win young voters' support in the November election. Trump's official account on X, formerly Twitter, has 108.5 million followers – though his favored social media outlet is Truth Social, which he owns, where he has 10.6 million followers. The official White House accounts on X and Instagram have 2.4 million and 9.3 million followers, respectively. – AFP
