Pentagon: Airstrikes caused limited disruption to Iran's nuclear program, delaying progress by several months

New US intelligence report states that Iran nuclear program was delayed just several months following the recent US airstrike on Iran, despite assertions by the president Donald Trump that it was "completely obliterated," according to two sources who are familiar with the initial results. The first assessment, which was prepared by the Defense Intelligence Agency report on Monday, is in direct opposition to Trump Iran claims that were made by Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the destruction of Iran nuclear sites. The sources, who spoke in anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the issue publicly, claimed that even though the major sites like Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan were badly damaged but they weren't completely destroyed. White House rejects intel report The White House rejected the report and called it "flat-out wrong." Press secretary Karoline Leavitt has defended the mission and said "This leak clearly is aimed to discredit the president Trump and the courageous pilots who conducted an unintentionally successful strike. Iran could have shifted in the direction of enriched uranium prior to the strike. The report also discovered that a large portion of Iran's stash of highly Iran enriched uranium that could be used in the construction of the weapons of mass destruction, were relocated prior to that of the US strikes. The government believes it could have been moved to other secret nuclear sites within Iran. Initial assessment suggests damage that is not as severe. The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) was able to base its conclusions on an initial assessment of damage by US Central Command, which manages American forces in the Middle East. It suggests the president Trump may have exaggerated the extent of damage when he claimed that Iran's nuclear facilities had been "obliterated." Trump declared "total destruction" of Iranian facilities In a live speech on Saturday night following the strike, Trump claimed the US have completely destroyed Iran's enrichment facilities in Natanz, Fordow (which is deep underground) and Isfahan in which the material was kept.

Israel-Iran ceasefire holds but doubts remain over US claims

AP US President Donald Trump claimed to have brokered a peace deal between Israel and Iran yesterday. A lot has gone down since then, including a meltdown by the president and a brief blame game played by Israel and Iran. Early on Tuesday, Trump announced on Truth Social that the US had successfully mediated a ceasefire agreement between the two nations in conflict, but the development was not immediately confirmed by Israel and Iran. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, after both countries declared that they had accepted the terms of the ceasefire, cross-border strikes continued for a couple of hours, prompting Trump to lash out at Israel and Iran alike . 'We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the f— they're doing,' NBC News quoted Trump as saying. Both Israel and Iran accused each other of breaching the ceasefire, although the dust has largely settled today with no reports of strikes so far. Israel lifts restrictions As the conflict seems to have come to an end, the Israel Defense Forces' Home Front has greenlit schools across the country to reopen and lifted all restrictions that were imposed after Iran launched its retaliatory strikes against the country. Since the conflict erupted on June 13, classrooms across the country have remained closed, with several educational institutions struck by Iranian missile fire. A directive from the Home Front Command ordered the closure of schools and all nonessential businesses for safety reasons. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared the end of the '12-day war' yesterday, after Trump said 'the ceasefire is now in effect' on Truth Social and urged neither side to violate it. US strikes on Iran a failure? US media have cited people familiar with the Defence Intelligence Agency findings as saying the weekend strikes did not fully eliminate Iran's centrifuges or stockpile of enriched uranium. Contrary to Trump's claims that US strikes 'obliterated' Iran's nuclear program, media reports downplayed the attacks that Washington joined early on Sunday. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the authenticity of the assessment but said it was 'flat-out wrong and was classified as 'top secret' but was still leaked.' Trump, on the other hand, rejected media reports saying that American strikes on Iran did not destroy its nuclear programme, but only set it back by a few months. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Will the ceasefire hold? While the fighting has stopped between Israel and Iran, the ceasefire is widely seen as fragile by experts. Jonathan Panikoff, a former intelligence officer and the director of the Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council, told NPR that Iran's military capabilities have been significantly weakened, and Israel may also be approaching the limits of its endurance after days of missile exchanges. There is a possibility for diplomatic engagement, potentially through mediators such as Oman or even China. However, Panikoff cautions that a comprehensive resolution to Iran's nuclear ambitions remains out of reach, he said. 'Iran has seen its power significantly reduced in the region. It has seen its ability to defend against Israel, frankly, be obliterated. It just did not exist fundamentally in the way that I think even a lot of Iranian officials thought it was going to. And I think for Israel, after years of war in Gaza and certainly the last 12 days, it's accomplished most of its objectives to really diminish Iran's ballistic missile program and nuclear program, and may itself be running out of interceptor missiles to defend against Iran's missile strikes that we've seen [going] into Israel, including overnight,' Panikoff added. Zohran Mamdani set to become first Indian-American to lead New York as Mayor: Who is the 33-year-old Democratic socialist?

Zohran Mamdani , a 33-year-old US state assemblyman and democratic socialist, has declared victory in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, putting him on track to become the city's first Indian-American and Muslim mayor. His main challenger, former governor Andrew Cuomo , conceded the race Tuesday night in what many observers have called a major upset, according to western media reports. Though the final outcome will depend on New York City's ranked choice vote tallying process, Mamdani currently holds a commanding lead. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esquece o ar condicionado – esta é a nova sensação contra o calor Coolbox Saiba Mais Undo Unofficial results from the New York City Board of Elections show that Mamdani outpaced Cuomo not only in first-choice ballots but also significantly outperformed him in second-choice rankings — an advantage that may prove decisive in the multi-round count. 'Tonight, we made history,' Mamdani told supporters. Quoting Nelson Mandela, he added, 'It always seems impossible until it is done. My friends, we have done it.' Live Events Cuomo, who had launched a comeback bid following his 2021 resignation amid sexual harassment allegations, told his supporters that he had called Mamdani to congratulate him. 'Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won,' Cuomo said. While incumbent Mayor Eric Adams opted out of the Democratic primary to run as an independent, he and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa remain on the ballot for the general election. Cuomo has also left the door open to continue his campaign in November, stating: 'We are going to take a look and make some decisions.' If Mamdani's current advantage holds through the ranked choice count, he will face Adams and Sliwa in the general election to lead the largest city in the United States. Who is Zohran Mamdani? Zohran Mamdani is the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and India-born Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani. He was born in Kampala, Uganda, and moved to New York City at the age of seven. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018 and married a Syrian artist earlier this year. Mamdani holds a degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College in Maine. Before entering politics, he worked as a foreclosure prevention counselor assisting low-income homeowners. According to his official New York Assembly profile, Mamdani also pursued creative work in rap and writing. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020. Since then, he has emerged as a leading voice in the city's progressive wing, advocating policies aimed at making New York more affordable. His campaign platform includes proposals such as free public buses, universal child care, new affordable housing, and a higher minimum wage — all to be funded through a 2% tax on the top 1% of earners. Mamdani's campaign gained visibility through widespread grassroots mobilization and the viral popularity of his multilingual, culturally resonant videos — one of which featured Bollywood references and explanations of the ranked choice voting system in Hindi and Urdu. If elected, Mamdani would be NYC's first Indian-American and Muslim mayor Mamdani's likely victory would mark a historic milestone: he would be the first Indian-American and the first Muslim to serve as mayor of New York City. His ascent reflects a growing demographic and political shift in the city, long known for its diversity but rarely represented in high office by members of the South Asian or Muslim communities. Endorsed by prominent national progressives such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani's candidacy drew strong grassroots support, particularly among younger voters and immigrant communities. Cuomo, by contrast, criticized Mamdani for lacking administrative experience and took aim at his positions on Israel and Palestine. Mamdani has denied accusations of antisemitism and emphasized his commitment to Jewish New Yorkers. Asked in a debate whether he would visit Israel if elected, Mamdani responded, 'As mayor, I will be standing up for Jewish New Yorkers and will be meeting them wherever they are across the five boroughs.' Why Mamdani's win matters Mamdani's primary win is being seen as a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party's progressive faction, especially during President Donald Trump's second term. His victory over a seasoned political heavyweight like Cuomo underscores a shift in voter priorities — from experience and establishment credentials to fresh messaging on affordability, equity, and grassroots engagement. The win is also significant in light of the controversies surrounding his opponents. Cuomo resigned as governor in 2021 after an official investigation found that he had sexually harassed multiple women. Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams has been facing scrutiny over alleged financial improprieties, though federal prosecutors have since dropped the case. Throughout the campaign, Mamdani relied on small-dollar donations, an energised base of young volunteers, and a door-to-door ground game. Cuomo's campaign, by contrast, spent heavily on attack ads, reportedly raising over $25 million, including from donors affiliated with Republican interests.
