Chamberlain shines as Bulls dominate Currie Cup opener

Bulls coach Phiwe Nomlomo has lauded flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain for his pivotal performance in the Bulls' emphatic 48-23 victory over Western Province at the Cape Town Stadium at the weekend.
Chamberlain has had a challenging time at the Bulls since joining them from the Sharks, struggling for game time in the United Rugby Championship. However, in the Currie Cup opener, he shrugged off the rust, expertly guiding the Bulls to a six-try win.
Scrumhalf Zak Burger and Number 8 Jeandré Rudolph each contributed two tries. Chamberlain was flawless with his kicking, converting all eight attempts at goal – six conversions and two penalties.

'The last time Boeta started a game was about five months ago, and to come out and put in a performance like he did, I'm sure he'll be incredibly chuffed,' Nomlomo said. 'That bravery to keep pushing the boundary – that was class.'
Nomlomo expressed particular pride in his team's first-half performance, which saw them lead 38-16 at the break.
'We were clinical,' he stated.
'That's where everything started. I think when you're up against the blue machine and it's going like that, it is a bit difficult to play against. Province were incredibly gutsy, but their discipline didn't help them at all and probably killed the game for them.'
The home team suffered three first-half sin-bins, with captain Zain Davids and locks Gary Porter and Alex Groves all receiving yellow cards for breakdown infringements. At one point, Western Province struggled to scrummage due to a lack of locks on the field.
This week, the Bulls will host a Sharks side still reeling from a significant defeat by the Lions at Ellis Park.

After consecutive fourth-place finishes, the club has been active in the transfer market in a bid to bolster its squad for a stronger run this season. Tinkler believes they now have the depth and quality to finally break into the top three. 'We are hoping that we can improve on last season; that is always the objective and the target you set for yourself as a club and as a coach individually,' Tinkler said during the Betway Premiership launch. 'The club has finished fourth twice, two seasons in a row, just fell short of CAF Confed, so next season you want to take that one step higher. 'We are not looking at it as being in the top three but more as points — can we achieve a certain amount of points this season? The club has never broken the 50-point mark, can we do that as a club? 'Because that will mean we are moving in the right direction as a club and come the end of the season, that will possibly guarantee you a top-three finish.' While Mamelodi Sundowns continue to dominate South African league football, Tinkler insists the focus should not solely be on dethroning the champions but on collecting points consistently against all teams. The former Pirates boss has challenged his side to be more ruthless throughout the league season, particularly in away games, if they hope to close the considerable gap on Sundowns, who finished last season with an impressive 73 points. 'It's not beating Sundowns, it's about being able to beat all the other sides in the league,' Tinkler continued. 'Those are the games that are the most important for collecting points away from home. Those are the results that become more important if you want to be competing with Sundowns. 'When I was still coaching Pirates the target used to be 60 points and you win the league and we used to break them down into ten points every five games. It's 73 points now and we are achieving seven or eight points. 'The gap between us and Sundowns is still massive, can we close that gap, can we hit 50? We are still far behind Sundowns, but we are moving in the right direction.'

"So, by that commitment, we can win every time or lose as few points as possible so that we can compete for the championship.'

While the league title is clearly the club's primary objective — especially after their off-season recruitment — the ex-Fulham centre-back is determined to maintain the team's momentum rather than overhaul what is already working. 'As a new coach, it's very important to keep the legacy,' Ouaddou said during the Betway Premiership season launch on Tuesday in Johannesburg. 'When you come to a club such as Pirates, which has been doing very well to build that legacy for the last three years, it would not be wise for me to come and try to change everything. 'I will keep the good things and try to bring my touch. We are expecting an exciting season and we want to please our fans.
