Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler has outlined his ambitions of securing a Top 3 finish this season, with the ultimate goal of returning to the CAF Confederation Cup.
The 2025/26 Betway Premiership offers a fresh opportunity for Babina Noko to make that push, and their campaign gets underway with a high-stakes opening fixture against Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm kick-off).
Tinkler's charges will have little room to ease into the season, especially considering their previous success at the same venue. Sekhukhune were one of just two teams to beat Pirates at Orlando last term, a 1-0 result that dealt a major blow to the Buccaneers' title hopes.

However, that statement victory wasn't enough to secure continental qualification, as Sekhukhune narrowly missed out on third place — a finish that would have seen them return to the Confederation Cup. After consecutive fourth-place finishes, the club has been active in the transfer market in a bid to bolster its squad for a stronger run this season.
Tinkler believes they now have the depth and quality to finally break into the top three.
'We are hoping that we can improve on last season; that is always the objective and the target you set for yourself as a club and as a coach individually,' Tinkler said during the Betway Premiership launch.
'The club has finished fourth twice, two seasons in a row, just fell short of CAF Confed, so next season you want to take that one step higher.
'We are not looking at it as being in the top three but more as points — can we achieve a certain amount of points this season? The club has never broken the 50-point mark, can we do that as a club?
'Because that will mean we are moving in the right direction as a club and come the end of the season, that will possibly guarantee you a top-three finish.'
While Mamelodi Sundowns continue to dominate South African league football, Tinkler insists the focus should not solely be on dethroning the champions but on collecting points consistently against all teams.
The former Pirates boss has challenged his side to be more ruthless throughout the league season, particularly in away games, if they hope to close the considerable gap on Sundowns, who finished last season with an impressive 73 points.
'It's not beating Sundowns, it's about being able to beat all the other sides in the league,' Tinkler continued.
'Those are the games that are the most important for collecting points away from home. Those are the results that become more important if you want to be competing with Sundowns.
'When I was still coaching Pirates the target used to be 60 points and you win the league and we used to break them down into ten points every five games. It's 73 points now and we are achieving seven or eight points.
'The gap between us and Sundowns is still massive, can we close that gap, can we hit 50? We are still far behind Sundowns, but we are moving in the right direction.'

Stubborn Chippa hold Sundowns in season opener

Sundowns will be hoping for a better showing when they host AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night. Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their Betway Premiership title defence with a frustrating 1-1 draw against a resilient Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Chippa bounce back The champions led through Arthur Sales' first-half strike, but Khaya Mfecane's second-half equaliser ensured the Chilli Boys claimed a deserved point in front of their home supporters. The Tshwane giants lacked the cutting edge in the final third against a stubborn Chippa defence. ALSO READ: Chiefs learn CAF Confed Cup opponents Sales broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, finishing smartly inside the box after a neat pass from Tashreeq Matthews. It was the Brazilian forward's third goal against Chippa, following his brace in their last meeting at the Buffalo City Stadium in the previous campaign. Despite trailing, Chippa had a great chance before the interval to level matters. However, Asanele Bonani squandered the most glaring opportunity, blasting over the bar from close range with only Ronwen Williams to beat after being played in by Mfecane. The visitors controlled possession after the restart but were stunned in the 65th minute when Mfecane's deflected shot from the edge of the area wrong-footed Williams. The strike came off Teboho Mokoena to sneak into the back of the net as Chippa found a deserved equaliser. Chippa keeper Stanley Nwabali then pulled off a superb one-handed save to keep out Themba Zwane's curling effort, before Siyabonga Mabena went agonisingly close to stealing the win late on, firing into the side-netting after a slick back-heel from Zwane. Sundowns stars still missing Sundowns were still without Lucas Ribeiro and Khuliso Mudau amid ongoing uncertainty over their futures. They welcomed Peter Shalulile back to the bench after his absence in last Sunday's quarterfinal win over Richards Bay. Springbok Women's coach aiming for Rugby World Cup play-offs

Target set Springbok head coach Swys de Bruin speaks to the media after their match against the Black Ferns XV in Cape Town last week. De Bruin says he's aiming for a play-off berth at this year's Women's Rugby World Cup. Photo: Ryan Wilkisky/BackpagePix Image: Ryan Wilkisky/BackpagePix South Africa head coach Swys de Bruin believes an experienced squad led by the Springbok women's most capped player Nolusindiso Booi can "push them towards the play-offs" of the Rugby World Cup. Booi, capped 52 times, also captained the squad at the previous tournament in New Zealand in 2022 and is one of 19 players out of the 32 player squad with previous Women's Rugby World Cup experience. South Africa, whose poor record pales into insignificance compared to the men's team who have won the global showpiece a record four times, are in Pool D for the tournament, which is being held in England and runs from August 22 to September 27. They face a tough challenge to even progress from the pool stage with Six Nations runners-up France favourites to top it. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. Booi is South Africa's most experienced Test captain, having led the side in 23 Tests, and will be backed up by vice-captain Babalwa Latsha, who has skippered the Bok Women in 14 Test matches. Booi (2010, 2014, 2022) and Tayla Kinsey (2014, 2022) are the most experienced players in the squad, which boasts a combined total of 689 Test caps. They will be missing one key player in Lusanda Dumke, the 28-year-old 33-times capped flanker will be absent owing to health concerns. All 32 players selected featured either against Spain in April, the Rugby Africa Women's Cup, the two Tests against Canada in July, or the two recent internationals against the Black Ferns XV. De Bruin said what excites him most are the combinations they will work with. "I believe that will push us towards the play-offs as we have so many options for each opponent, and that will boost our abilities," he said. "This selection is a culmination of hard work and sacrifice for the players, and I want to congratulate them. "We all know the journeys each one travelled and for most, it was not easy."
