‘Deeply concerned': Editors Guild on Centre's order to block ‘4 PM News' YouTube channel
The press association said that it was 'deeply concerned' by the government's directive to block access to 4PM News ' YouTube channel on grounds of national security or public order 'without any disclosure of the specific reasons or evidence, and without following principles of natural justice'.
'National security cannot become a pretext to silence critical voices or independent reporting,' it added.
On Tuesday, YouTube said that the channel of 4 PM News was 'unavailable in this country because of an order from the government related to national security or public order'.
The YouTube channel had about 7.3 million subscribers. It was not clear what led the government to order the blocking of the channel.
Sanjay Sharma, the editor-in-chief of 4 PM News, claimed that the ban was an attempt to ' crush a strong voice of democracy in the name of national security'.
The channel had uploaded several videos criticising the Narendra Modi-led Union government after the Pahalgam terror attack, Newslaundry reported.
'Increasing curbs on free speech'
On Thursday, the Editors Guild described the government order to block the YouTube channel as an 'opaque use of executive power'. The blocking was in line with a 'troubling pattern the guild has flagged earlier – of increasing curbs on free speech through non-transparent processes', said the press body.
It flagged the example of the Union government blocking the Tamil news website Vikatan in February.
The website was blocked after it published on February 10 a cartoon in the digital magazine Vikatan Plus depicting Modi with his hands and legs chained, sitting across from United States President Donald Trump.
This had come against the backdrop of the US deporting several Indians as part of Trump's wider crackdown on undocumented migrants.
The Editors Guild said that the Vikatan website was blocked 'without warning or due process'.
'Although the Madras High Court later ordered interim relief, the case reflected the government's growing tendency to suppress journalistic expression through opaque executive orders,' it added.

In a message posted on Facebook, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote: "Received the tragic news of a vehicle accident in the Muwani area of Pithoragarh district. I pray to the Almighty to grant peace to the souls of those who lost their lives and give strength to the bereaved families to bear this immense grief. The district administration has been directed to ensure proper treatment for the injured. I pray for the speedy recovery of all those hurt in the accident." According to initial reports, the ill-fated vehicle was en route from Muwani to Bokta when the accident took place. Following the mishap, senior administrative officials rushed to the spot and coordinated with disaster management teams to carry out a rescue operation. The injured were retrieved from the gorge and transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital for urgent medical care. The impact of the accident was so severe that the vehicle was completely mangled. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. However, local officials have said that the victims were all residents of the region and were returning to their village when the tragedy struck. Preliminary assessments suggest that poor road conditions and high speed may have contributed to the accident, though the exact cause is still under investigation.

This marks the second letter from the Telangana govt to the Union ministry in as many days. 'Project illegal' In the letter, Telangana's chief secretary urged a revision of the meeting agenda and termed the Banakacherla project 'illegal', citing lack of approvals from key regulatory bodies such as the Godavari and Krishna river management boards (GRMB and KRMB), the central water commission (CWC), and the expert appraisal committee of the Union environment ministry. Stating that the expert appraisal committee already rejected Andhra's pre-feasibility report for the Banakacherla project, the state govt said discussion on the Banakacherla now is premature and undermines the credibility of national water regulatory institutions. Telangana irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar said the need is to prioritise long-pending projects such as the Palamuru-Rangareddy and Dindi schemes. Delhi Public Transport Set For Major Overhaul: Smart Cards, High-Tech Shelters, ISBT Upgrades On Agenda
The Delhi government has initiated a major overhaul of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to provide world-class public transport services to the citizens of the national capital. According to a release, under this initiative, smart travel cards will soon be introduced, bus routes are being restructured, interstate bus terminals (ISBTs) will be modernised, and bus queue shelters (BQSs) will be redesigned to be more comfortable and high-tech. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while addressing a high-level review meeting of the Transport Department on Tuesday, asserted that with the guidance and support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the dream of equipping Delhi with world-class public transport will soon be realised. The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Singh, Chief Secretary Dharmendra, Transport Commissioner Niharika Rai, and other senior officials. CM Gupta stated that DTC, which is currently running at a loss of Rs 60,000 crore due to past mismanagement, will be revitalised and transformed into a robust transport service. She further added that the number of both small (DEVI) and large buses is being increased, and the new routes are being strategically planned to enhance accessibility for commuters. "Our government envisions DTC as a symbol of excellent transport service in Delhi," the CM stated, as per the release. Delhi CM, while reviewing the city's transport systems, laid out key developments that will shape Delhi's public transport future. One of the major announcements was the introduction of a unified smart card system for all modes of public transport in Delhi. This card will enable seamless travel across DTC buses, Delhi Metro, and the upcoming Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). The Chief Minister also announced a special Pink Card for women and transgender residents, which will allow them free travel in DTC buses. Discussions are currently underway with banks to ensure a smooth and foolproof rollout of these cards, aimed at making public transportation more accessible and hassle-free. CM Gupta also shared the current status of the DTC fleet, noting that Delhi operates 660 small electric buses, 1,800 large electric buses, and 1,800 CNG buses, with a total of 4,800 electric buses forming the city's robust EV fleet. However, she acknowledged that many of these buses still operate on outdated routes, limiting their effectiveness in serving the city's population. To address this, the government has collaborated with IIT Delhi to design a comprehensive new route plan. This plan aims to enhance bus connectivity in underserved areas and improve integration with Metro services. A pilot project will be initiated in Yamuna Vihar, following which the model will be implemented citywide, the release said. Another key area of focus is the modernisation of Bus Queue Shelters (BQS) across the capital. All BQS will be upgraded with real-time arrival displays, LED lighting, digital boards, solar power support, and weather-resistant designs. These upgrades will be executed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Currently, out of the 4,627 shelters in Delhi, only 2,021 are functional. The new shelter designs are inspired by global standards and tailored to Delhi's local needs, the press release added. The Chief Minister also emphasised the need to transform Delhi's Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs) into world-class facilities. Terminals like Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, and Sarai Kale Khan will be revamped to provide airport-like amenities, ensuring passenger comfort, safety, and accessibility. These terminals will be equipped with modern infrastructure and will serve as model hubs for intercity travel in India's capital. CM Rekha Gupta reiterated, "With the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and collaborative efforts between the Centre and Delhi Government, we are determined to give Delhi citizens a sustainable, green, and smart public transport experience."
