Four-time mayor from border region joins race for governor of New Mexico
Competition for the Democratic nomination for governor in New Mexico is heating up as former four-term Las Cruces mayor Ken Miyagishima launched a campaign with a centrist focus on public safety, affordable housing and efforts to shore up the state's health care workforce.
Miyagishima hopes to succeed Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham as she terms out of office at the end of 2026 amid public frustration with crime, homelessness and public education.
The Democratic nomination also is being sought by former congresswoman and US Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, a tribal member of Laguna Pueblo, as well as Albuquerque-based District Attorney Sam Bregman, the father of Major League Baseball star Alex Bregman of the Boston Red Sox.
Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull says he will begin campaigning for governor next month. The primary election takes place in June 2026.
Miyagishima won four consecutive elections as "Mayor Ken" in a fast-growing state university town, set on the Upper Rio Grande amid chili farms and pecan orchards, 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of El Paso, Texas, and the southern US border.
"Sure, my last name, it sounds like an obstacle course," said Miyagishima, who is of Japanese and Mexican heritage.

The mayor of the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez attended Tuesday's campaign announcement, as Miyagishima emphasizes orderly border enforcement and economic cooperation.
At the same time, Miyagishima has voiced qualified support for invoking the Alien Enemies Act to address criminal activity - without unjustly targeting people based on heritage or national background.
His US-born father was detained as a child at a World War II incarceration camp for Japanese Americans - and went on to serve in the US Army.
Trump has used the 18th century wartime law to swiftly deport Venezuelans accused of being gang members to a prison in El Salvador, amid court challenges.
"I support protecting the border. I think it's important to have an orderly way to come into the US," he told The Associated Press.
"To make it a military zone? I don't know."
Miyagishima, a district manager for a major insurance company, is touting his know-how in government finances and the private sector. If elected governor, Miyagishima said he hopes to make housing more affordable through state-backed loans and an expansion of the construction workforce, including vocational training for people convicted of nonviolent crimes.
He opposed the state's decision in 2021 to legalize recreational cannabis, and now is proposing creation of a state "metro" police force to augment the capabilities of local law enforcement in crime-torn cities including Albuquerque.

Washington: The White House launched a TikTok account on Tuesday, as President Donald Trump continues to permit the Chinese-owned platform to operate in the United States despite a law requiring its sale. "America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?" read a caption on the account's first post on the popular video sharing app, a 27-second clip. The account had about 4,500 followers an hour after posting the video. Trump's personal account on TikTok meanwhile has 110.1 million followers, though his last post was on November 5, 2024 -- Election Day. TikTok is owned by China-based internet company ByteDance. A federal law requiring TikTok's sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump's inauguration on January 20. But the Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media and who has said he is fond of TikTok, put the ban on pause. In mid-June Trump extended a deadline for the popular video-sharing app by another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States. That extension is due to expire in mid-September. While Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, he reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform -- which boasts almost two billion global users -- after coming to believe it helped him win young voters' support in the November election. Trump's official account on X, formerly Twitter, has 108.5 million followers -- though his favored social media outlet is Truth Social, which he owns, where he has 10.6 million followers. The official White House accounts on X and Instagram have 2.4 million and 9.3 million followers, respectively.

Relief for India as China agrees to lift curbs on rare earth, fertiliser exports
Wang Yi, S Jaishankar NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar's meeting with counterpart Wang Yi saw efforts by both sides to address each other's concerns and interests, with Beijing agreeing to remove curbs on export of fertilisers, rare earth minerals and tunnel boring machines to cater to India's needs. Indian authorities said these were three key concerns raised in the meeting. Both sides also agreed to re-opening border trade through designated trading points, namely Lipulekh, Shipki La and Nathu La. Wang brought up Taiwan and Jaishankar stressed there had been no change in India's position. Like most other countries, India follows a One-China policy. However, as external affairs ministry said, India emphasised that like the rest of the world it has a relationship with Taiwan focused on economic, technology and cultural ties, and this would continue. In the meeting on Monday, Jaishankar for the second time this year raised issues related to trade restrictions imposed by China. He had flagged it last month in a meeting with Wang on the margins of the SCO foreign ministers' meeting. China announced in April its decision to implement export controls on certain rare earth items. According to MEA, govt remained in touch with the Chinese side, in Beijing as well as in Delhi, to bring "predictability in supply chain for trade consistent with international practices". India's rare earth magnet import dependency on China has hovered at 80%-85% in the past three years. India had earlier also taken up with China the issue of restricted fertiliser supplies. Indian companies had in fact signed long-term agreements with their Saudi counterparts last month for continued supplies of DAP, the fertiliser most used in India after urea. China is one of the countries India has been dependent on for DAP supplies. A foreign ministry spokesperson in Beijing did not confirm if China was going to review export licences or if it was making an exemption for India but said China stood ready to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with relevant countries and jointly keep global industrial and supply chains stable. In his meeting with Jaishankar, Wang had said "in today's world, the changing situation is evolving rapidly, unilateral bullying practices are rampant, and free trade and the international order face severe challenges". Jaishankar too had underlined the imperative of working towards ensuring a stable global economy.

Modi-Mauritius PM meet likely in Kashi on Sept 11
Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to host Mauritius PM Navin Ramgoolam in Varanasi on Sept 11. As per the initial intimation from the Ministry of External Affairs received by the district officials, a bilateral meeting of both the PMs has been also proposed in the city on the same day. Talking to TOI on Tuesday, divisional commissioner S Rajalingam said that as per the initial intimation from the Ministry of External Affairs, a bilateral meeting of PM Narendra Modi and the Mauritius PM has been proposed here on Sept 11. The minutes of the proposed visit of both the PMs have not been received, said the divisional commissioner, who has been appointed the nodal officer for the preparations of the proposed bilateral meeting. He has been also assigned the task to welcome the guests and select the venues. It would be the third occasion when Modi would host the premier of another country in his parliamentary constituency. In Dec 2015, Modi hosted the then Japanese PM, the late Shinzo Abe. The visit of the Japanese PM resulted in the gifting of an international convention centre, Rudraksh, as a symbol of Indo-Japan friendship. Modi hosted French President Emmanuel Macron in the city in March 2018. After inaugurating a solar power plant in Mirzapur, the PM Modi and the French President visited the Deen Dayal Hastkala Sankul to interact with artisans and view a live demonstration of their crafts. Later, they both enjoyed a boat ride from Assi to Dashaswamedh. The officials said that apart from the venue of the proposed bilateral meeting, other places where the guest will visit and events in which he will take part will be finalised soon.
