3 suspected poachers caught with rhino horn in KZN
Zululand Observer reports that the Zululand Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said three men wearing masks entered a game reserve and accosted two security guards. After tying them up, they robbed them of a shotgun, an R5 assault rifle and their cellphones.
'It is alleged that the trio proceeded to shoot a rhino and remove its horn. While busy with their criminal activity, they were distracted by an alarm that had been activated. They fled the scene, leaving the shotgun next to the rhino carcass.'
Gwala added that police responded, but discovered the suspects had fled the game reserve.
'Police and private security personnel worked tirelessly throughout the day looking for the suspects. With assistance from community members, they were eventually arrested as they took refuge in the bush.'
They will appear in Vryheid Magistrate's Court on charges of armed robbery, rhino poaching and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Double life sentence for KZN schoolgirl killer
Baphumulele Zulu (24) has been handed two life sentences by Ixopo Regional Court in KZN for murdering two schoolgirls near Creighton in Ngwagwane in 2022. Zululand Observer reports that he received another eight years for escaping lawful custody. KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says Amanda Zulu and Minenhle Buthelezi – two Grade 12 pupils – were renting a house in the area to be closer to school. 'On the evening of July 30, 2022, both complainants were attacked at the house. Following the incident, Amanda Zulu was found bleeding outside the house. She was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. 'Buthelezi's body was found further away in a ditch in a field. Both had been brutally assaulted on their heads with an unknown object. Zulu was arrested after a family member handed him over to the police.' Ramkisson-Kara says both families were confused as to the motives behind the killings, and that Zulu had not appeared remorseful. 'This sentence underscores the seriousness with which the justice system views crimes of this nature. The accused in this matter snuffed out the lives of two young women. The NPA remains resolute in our pursuit of justice on behalf of the victims of crime,' she says. Third burned female body found in east, police investigate
Police in Silverton have launched a murder investigation, following the discovery of three burned female bodies found between June and July along the railway line between Waltloo and Denneboom train stations. According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, the bodies were found at the same location on separate dates over the past month. 'The police have opened three cases of murder following the discovery of burned female bodies between June and July,' said Sibeko. She confirmed the most recent discovery was made on Sunday, July 27. 'The details surrounding the incidents remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing,' she said. She added that in all three cases, members of the public alerted police after coming across the bodies. It is reported that the murders share a similar modus operandi, but the motive behind the killings remains unknown at this stage. JMPD steps up patrols against illegal street racing
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed an increase in reports of alleged illegal street racing in parts of the city, particularly Rosebank, Fourways, and Midrand. This comes in the wake of a tragic accident on Jan Smuts Avenue on July 12, in which an Uber driver lost his life. JMPD Superintendent Xolani Fihla, said JMPD attended the scene, and a case of culpable homicide has been opened, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) currently investigating. 'These incidents highlight the severe dangers posed by illegal street racing.' The department acknowledged growing concerns raised by community members, as well as by Michael Sun, DA Gauteng spokesperson for community safety, who recently called for visible enforcement and greater accountability. 'While we strive for a constant presence, illegal street racing often occurs spontaneously and across various locations, making real-time enforcement challenging. However, we are enhancing our information gathering and tactical responses to deal with these incidents more effectively.' Fihla said that collecting specific statistics on street racing-related arrests, injuries, and fatalities is complicated, as such cases are frequently recorded under broader traffic offences, such as reckless and negligent driving, excessive speeding, or driving under the influence. Despite these challenges, Fihla reaffirmed JMPD's commitment to road safety. He said the department is ramping up patrols and working closely with other law enforcement agencies to hold offenders accountable under the National Road Traffic Act. 'We urge residents to continue reporting any suspicious activity. Public co-operation is vital in helping us keep Johannesburg's roads safe for us all.'
