Did Shane Tamura enter wrong elevator banks? Mayor says NYC shooter wanted to target NFL offices

Hindustan Times5 days ago
A gunman who killed four people at a Manhattan office building before killing himself claimed in a note to have a brain disease linked to contact sports and was trying to target the National Football League's headquarters but took the wrong elevator, officials said Tuesday. Investigators believe Shane Tamura, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices in the building Monday after shooting several people in the lobby but entered the wrong elevator banks, Mayor Eric Adams said in interviews.
Four people were killed, including an off-duty New York City police officer, Didarul Islam.
Tamura's mental illness
Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The degenerative brain disease has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma common in contact sports like football, but it can only be diagnosed after someone has died.
Tamura's note said his brain should be studied after he died, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. The note also specifically referenced the NFL, one of them said.
Tamura played high school football in California nearly two decades ago, but he never played in the NFL.
'He seemed to have blamed the NFL,' the mayor told WPIX-TV. "The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.'

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called it an 'an unspeakable act of violence in our building,' saying he was deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded and the officer who gave his life to protect others.
Goodell said in a memo to staff that a league employee was seriously injured in the attack and was hospitalized in stable condition.
The shooting happened along Park Avenue, one the nation's most recognized streets, and just blocks from Grand Central Terminal and Rockefeller Center. It's also less than a 15-minute walk from where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed last December by a man who prosecutors say was angry over corporate greed.
Trump reacts to NYC shooting
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he knows that area of Manhattan well.
'I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence. My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice,' Trump posted on social media.
The building houses the NFL and other well-known businesses
Surveillance video showed the gunman exiting a double-parked BMW early Monday evening with a rifle, then marching across a public plaza into the skyscraper, which is also home to investment firm Blackstone and other companies.
Then, he started firing, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, killing a police officer working a corporate security detail and hitting a woman who tried to take cover as he sprayed the lobby with gunfire.
He next made his way to the elevator bank, shooting a guard at a security desk and another man in the lobby, the commissioner said.
'He appeared to have first walked past the officer and then he turned to his right, and saw him and discharged several rounds,' Adams said in a TV interview.
The man took the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owns the building, Rudin Management, and shot and killed one person on that floor. The man then shot himself, the commissioner said.
Blackstone confirmed that one of its employees, real estate executive Wesley LePatner, was among those killed.
'Words cannot express the devastation we feel,' the company said in a statement.
The officer who was killed was from Bangladesh
Islam, 36, had served as a police officer in New York City for 3½ years and was an immigrant from Bangladesh, Tisch said at a news conference.
His body was draped in the New York Police Department flag as it was moved from the hospital to an ambulance, with fellow officers standing at attention.
'He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,' Tisch said. 'He died as he lived: a hero.'
One of the investigation's challenges is that Tamura only arrived in New York shortly before the shooting, leaving few clues in the area, the mayor said. Another is that for law enforcement, 'dealing with those who come from areas with lax gun laws that allow individuals to have these high-powered weapons into cities like New York that have strong gun laws.'

Rashee Rice speaks for first time after Dallas highway crash as NFL punishment looms (Image Via Google) In early August 2025, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice spoke for the first time since a viral hit‑and‑run crash on a Dallas highway in March 2024. Rumors were there about his upcoming punishment. In his public remarks at Kansas City Chiefs training camp, Rice hinted at deep change without revealing full details. His words left reporters and fans wondering how this star plans to move forward while facing legal and league consequences. Rashee Rice faces jail time and backlash over Dallas crash Rashee Rice pleaded guilty on July 17, 2025 to two third‑degree felonies: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing injury. He admitted to driving a Lamborghini Urus at 119 mph on U.S. Highway 75 (North Central Expressway) in Dallas, Texas, which caused a six-car chain-reaction crash. He also fled the scene on foot without checking on the injured. Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail, which he may serve at any time during that probation period. He has already paid over $115,000 in medical restitution and settled one civil suit for approximately $1.086 million. You have to learn from things like that. I've learned…' He added that he would continue working within his means to make sure everyone impacted will be made whole and urged people to drive safe. Rice's attorney, Royce West, also spoke out, noting the jail time will be served across the probation period and that Rice plans to turn himself in responsibly. Former prosecutors explained that because Rice has deferred adjudication, the case may be dismissed if he completes probation successfully. Meanwhile, the NFL is reviewing the case and a multi-game suspension is expected. Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that Rice will take part in training camp and preseason drills, though any regular-season participation may depend on league discipline. Anaconda Bar Shooting: Investigators find suspect's truck in manhunt after 4 killed; details inside

In a major update on the Owl Bar shooting in Anaconda, investigators have found the pickup truck used by the man who allegedly shot and killed four people at a Montana bar on Friday, August 1, 2025. However, officials say the suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous, is still at large. Giving an update on the Montana shooting incident, Montana Division of Criminal Investigation Administrator Lee Johnson said at a news conference late Friday that a white Ford F-150 that Michael Paul Brown drove was found, but Brown 'was not located in or around the vehicle.' Michael Paul Brown, 45, fled The Owl Bar in the small town of Anaconda in a white pickup truck but ditched it at some point, said Lee Johnson, administrator of the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which is overseeing the case. He urged residents late Friday to stay at home and be on high alert. 'While law enforcement has not received reports of Brown harming any other individuals, he is believed to be armed, and he is extremely dangerous,' Johnson said. Authorities said they would release the names of the victims once all of their families have been notified. 'This is a small, tight-knit community that has been harmed by the heinous actions of one individual who does not represent what this community or Montanans stand for,' Johnson said. Live Events Anaconda, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Butte, is hemmed in by mountains. The town of about 9,000 people was founded by copper barons who profited off nearby mines in the late 1800s. A smelter stack that's no longer operational looms over the valley. Brown lived next door to The Owl Bar, said owner David Gwerder, who wasn't there during the shooting on Friday morning. Gwerder told The Associated Press that the bartender and three patrons were killed and didn't think anyone else was inside. He also said he wasn't aware of any conflicts between Brown and any of the victims. 'He knew everybody who was in that bar. I guarantee you that,' Gwerder said. 'He didn't have any running disputes with any of them. I just think he snapped.' Brown served in the U.S. Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005, said Lt. Col. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. Brown was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009, Castro said. He left military service in the rank of sergeant. Brown's niece, Clare Boyle, told the AP on Friday that her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years and that she and her other family members repeatedly sought help. 'This isn't just a drunk/high man going wild,' she wrote in a Facebook message. 'It's a sick man who doesn't know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn't know where or when he is either.' With no sign of Brown in the white pickup or his home, authorities converged on the Stumptown Road area west of Anaconda by ground and air, locking it down so no one was allowed in or out. A helicopter hovered over a nearby mountainside as officers moved among the trees, said Randy Clark, a retired police officer who lives there. As reports of the shooting spread through town earlier Friday, business owners locked their doors and sheltered inside with customers.
