The role of sleep in overall health and disease prevention
The brain undergoes certain processes during sleep, which prepare us for the next day. Regarding one's mental health, what we experience in the present day, as in short-term memories, is converted to long-term memories during sleep. Sleeping improves our learning and problem-solving skills. Being sleep-deprived can cause damage to your brain; one will find it difficult to make decisions, think creatively and will also not be able to control their emotions and behavior. It can also lead to depression, anxiety and even suicide.
Now, about physical health, heart issues can be resolved and blood vessels can be repaired if following a normal sleeping schedule. If not, a hormone called ghrelin, which is responsible for making you feel hungry will go up. And another hormone called leptin, which is responsible for making you feel full, will go down. This imbalance can make one feel much hungrier even when they are full.

Sleep deficiency will increase your blood sugar levels and can increase the risk of diabetes. If following a proper sleeping schedule, the insulin hormone will be released, which will help in controlling the blood sugar levels. When in deep sleep, a hormone is released which helps in the proper growth of children and teens. Also, it helps in developing muscle mass, repairing cells and tissues.
Sleep also contributes to leading a proper fertility and puberty process. Luteinizing Hormone (LH), the hormone which supports reproductive health, is released during deep sleep. The spike in LH happens especially during the early stage of puberty. Poor sleep can delay this hormonal activity, which affects puberty. Sleeping helps in keeping the Circadian rhythm in sync; this rhythm controls when LH is released, which helps with ovulation. So, following a poor sleeping schedule can disrupt this process and affect the menstrual cycle, delaying ovulation, which can lower fertility.
There can be an increase in the difficulties in fighting germs and common infections. Sleep deficiency can affect the natural way your body responds to the same. Proper sleep can also dip the chances of multiple other health problems such as stroke, obesity and high blood pressure.
To avoid sleep deprivation, try to start sticking to a daily routine as in going to the bed and waking up at a specific time, avoid frequent naps a day, avoid excessive intake of caffeine or alcohol or the excessive intake of any fluids, also avoid going to the bed with phones as too much screen-time before bed can also affect a good night's sleep.

Asia Healthcare Holdings to invest Rs 400 crore in Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology to double hospital network
Asia Healthcare Holdings , a leading healthcare investment platform backed by Singapore's GIC and TPG, will invest Rs 400 crore in Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), one of the largest single-speciality chains focused on uro-nephro care, in the next 4-5 years, AHH's executive chairman Vishal Bali told ET. AHH, which has currently over 70% stake in AINU, will invest this fund for growth and expansion of the urology and nephrology chain with plans to open 13 hospitals from current seven in the next 3-4 years – with most planned in Tier 2 towns such as Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore, and others. That makes a total of Rs 1,000 crore investment that we will put behind this specialty,' said Bali. 'We will invest the fund in the growth creation of a much bigger footprint for AINU,' he added. 'We see a big opportunity at AHH in the creation and exponential growth of single specialty enterprises in the Tier 2 cities,' said Bali. Live Events Currently, AINU is present in seven locations including two Metro cities in Hyderabad and Chennai. All its other hospitals are in Tier 2 cities including places like Vizag and Siliguri. While its flagship centre in Hyderabad has 150 beds capacity, Chennai has 100 beds and the others in tier 2 are mostly 75 bedders. 'We are looking to ramp up the clinical capabilities and services in each of these hospitals. Robotic programme is an important service that we have – currently we have two centres offering this service – we want to start ramping it up in other centres,' said Sandeep Guduru, CEO, AINU. 'In our new centre in Banjara Hills in Hyderabad the focus is on setting up sub-specialities such as female neurology, paediatric neurology, etc. That's also a large part of our growth capex,' said Guduru. For FY 26-27, AHH has earmarked an outlay of Rs 150 crore capital expenditure in AINU to open 3-4 new urology and nephrology hospitals across India. India's market for single-specialty hospitals is set to more-than-double to $31 billion in three-four years from the current $15 billion. Most of it is private equity-led expansion into small towns and hinterlands where demand for quality healthcare services is growing rapidly, according to a report from investment bank Avendus. 'There are certain specialties that have come out of the multispecialty format and created a growth trajectory of their own,' said Bali. Explaining the fund's investment strategy, he said 'We are gung-ho about single specialty as it gives us the opportunity to scale quickly, our return on capital employed (ROCE) are much higher than what the multispecialty institutions see. From an India context this format will work very well because there is a replication opportunity.' The market share of single specialty hospitals, catering to segments like eyecare, oncology, fertility treatments and mother & child-care, urology and nephrology and dental care is expected to rise to 40% of the total healthcare market by 2028 from the current 30%, according to Avendus.

Eli Lilly's daily GLP-1 pill shows strong weight loss results without food restrictions
In the first Phase 3 trial of its once-daily oral GLP-1 pill for obesity, drugmaker Eli Lilly reported that participants lost an average of 12% of their body weight after 72 weeks. The findings, announced Thursday in a company news release, come from a study of more than 3,127 adults who were overweight or obese with at least one weight-related health condition such as hypertension, but without diabetes. According to Lilly, participants taking the highest dose of the experimental pill, called orforglipron, lost an average of 27.3 pounds (12.4%). The results have not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a medical journal. Lilly already manufactures several injectable GLP-1 drugs, including Zepbound for obesity and Mounjaro and Trulicity for diabetes, but the company is now among several pharmaceutical firms racing to develop an effective pill form. Currently, the only GLP-1 pill on the market is approved for diabetes and comes with strict diet restrictions. Lilly says no food or water restrictions are needed with orforglipron, which can be taken at any time of day. Strong weight loss and heart health benefits The trial showed that 59.6% of people on the highest dose lost at least 10% of their body weight, while 39.6% lost at least 15%. Lilly also reported that the medication lowered markers of cardiovascular risk, including cholesterol and blood pressure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Foods That Help In Healing Knee Pain Naturally Undo Side effects were similar to injectable GLP-1 medications, with gastrointestinal issues being the most common. Nausea, constipation, and diarrhea were reported, with nausea affecting 29–34% of participants, slightly higher than the 25–29% seen in Zepbound trials. The company is also testing orforglipron in patients with type 2 diabetes and exploring whether the pill could help maintain weight loss after initial treatment with injectables. Potential role in long-term weight maintenance Some experts see potential for GLP-1 pills to serve as a follow-up treatment after injectable therapies. 'They may not be as effective for maximum weight loss as initial therapy but could be excellent for weight-loss maintenance, which is a different and arguably much more important destination for lasting health benefits,' Dr. Jody Dushay, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and attending physician in endocrinology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, previously told CNN. Eli Lilly says it plans to submit orforglipron for regulatory review by the end of this year.

Kidney stones: Doctors warn about 10 normal foods that could land you in the ER, and the healthy ones that can stop it
Kidney stones are a painful and surprisingly common health problem, affecting millions of people around the world. These small, hard lumps form inside the kidneys and can cause intense pain, trouble passing urine, and in severe cases, long-term kidney damage. While your genes, medical history, and how much water you drink all play a role, Healthline says diet is one of the most important factors, both in causing and in preventing stones. By understanding what you eat, you can cut your chances of developing them. Kidney stones (also called renal calculi) are solid crystals that form when substances in your urine, like calcium, oxalate, or uric acid, build up too much. If there isn't enough fluid to dilute these substances, they can join together and harden. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Rolls-Royce Of Hearing Aids (And Under $100) Hear True Learn More Undo Sometimes the stones stay in the kidney, but they can also move through the urinary tract. Large stones can block urine flow, which may cause: Sudden, sharp pain in the lower back or belly Blood in the urine Feeling sick or vomiting Pain when passing urine Main Types of Kidney Stones Calcium oxalate stones – the most common type, often linked to high oxalate foods. Uric acid stones – linked to eating too much red or organ meat. Struvite stones – usually after urinary infections. Calcium phosphate stones – linked to high urine pH or certain health problems. Cystine stones – rare and genetic. How Kidney Stones Form Kidney stones form through a process called crystallisation. When you don't drink enough water, your urine becomes concentrated. If it contains too much calcium, oxalate, or uric acid, and not enough protective substances like citrate, crystals can start to form. Over time, these crystals can join and grow into stones. Live Events Risk factors include: Not drinking enough water Eating too much salt High doses of vitamin C supplements Drinking a lot of cola or fizzy drinks Too much red meat 10 Foods That Can Trigger Kidney Stones Spinach – Very high in oxalates, which can form calcium oxalate stones (Healthline). Beets – Another food rich in oxalates, risky in large amounts. Nuts and nut butters – Almonds, cashews, and peanuts are healthy but high in oxalates. Chocolate – Contains oxalates, especially dark chocolate. Black tea – A major source of oxalates if consumed heavily. Red meat – High purine content can raise uric acid levels. Salt – Excess sodium makes the kidneys release more calcium into urine. Cola drinks – Contain phosphoric acid, which may increase stone risk. Processed snacks – Often high in salt and preservatives, straining the kidneys. Rhubarb – Extremely high in oxalates. 10 Foods That May Help Prevent Kidney Stones Water – The best prevention; 2–3 litres daily helps dilute urine (Healthline). Citrus fruits – Lemon, lime, and orange are high in citrate, which blocks stone formation. Calcium-rich foods – Milk, yoghurt, cheese bind oxalates in the gut. Bananas – Low oxalates and rich in potassium for healthy kidneys. Barley water – May help flush out small crystals. Cucumbers – Hydrating and low in oxalates. Whole grains – Oats, brown rice, and barley provide magnesium to block stones. Basil leaves – In Ayurveda, believed to lower uric acid. Watermelon – Hydrating and supports urine flow. Pomegranate – Rich in antioxidants, may protect kidneys. Extra Tips to Prevent Stones Limit vitamin C supplements. Get calcium from food, not pills. Avoid too much animal protein. Stay active to keep kidneys healthy. Monitor urine pH if you've had stones before. When to See a Doctor Seek medical help if you have: Severe back or belly pain Bloody or cloudy urine Fever or chills Nausea or vomiting A doctor may order scans like an ultrasound or CT, and treatments can range from more fluids and medicine to procedures like shockwave therapy.
