‘Astonishing' WWI film leaves viewers ‘totally enthralled' as it shares untold story
A WWI epic is set to land on BBC iPlayer imminently and stands as essential viewing for cinema enthusiasts, after fans have enjoyed a "heartbreaking" WWII film, reports the Daily Record.
The picture debuted in 2011 and secured multiple Oscar nominations.
Countless viewers have lauded the production on IMDb, with one contributor sharing a perfect 10/10 critique headlined: "A Stunning and Enthralling Epic."
They elaborated: "The film is uncompromisingly sentimental, and I wasn't annoyed by it. Because it worked so well, it made me care about the story, the characters, the horses."
They continued: "There are a lot of powerful scenes in the movie, from which I cried. It was just so moving, it showed the true consequences of war. Some of the battle sequences were simply fantastic and astonishing."
Another glowing assessment bore the title: "A truly exceptional film about courage in both man and beast."
The reviewer observed: "This is a wonderful "against all odds" inspirational story about courage and relationships. A horse of truly amazing spirit touches the lives of so many during War I - including British soldiers, German soldiers, French civilians and even other horses."
A third viewer described the blockbuster as "simply delightful" and remarked: "I went to see this movie expecting NOT to like it. But, for 2 hours and 15 mins I was totally enthralled."
A glowing review highlighted: "I was expecting this movie to be just another extravagant sentimental potboiler. Wow, was I surprised. This is a great movie. The title says the movie is about a horse, but it's really about a lot more than that. The horse plays a central role but the humans figure in the story too, in a big way."
Helmed by the iconic Steven Spielberg, War Horse is a cinematic adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel and its acclaimed 2007 stage adaptation.
The plot centres on young Albert Narracott (portrayed by Jeremy Irvine), who develops an intense connection with a horse named Joey, purchased at auction by his father.
With the outbreak of World War I, Joey is conscripted into the cavalry, thrusting him into the war's frontlines.
The film traces Joey's odyssey across the battlefields, offering a stark glimpse into the war's brutality from multiple perspectives.
Albert, initially too youthful for military service, later enlists as a soldier to seek out Joey upon reaching enlistment age.
Boasting a stellar ensemble cast featuring Emily Watson of Chernobyl fame, Benedict Cumberbatch known for Sherlock and Doctor Strange, Harry Potter's David Thewlis, Peter Mullan of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Tom Hiddleston from The Night Manager, Toby Kebbell of Black Mirror, Robert Emms from Atlantis, and Eddie Marsan from Ray Donovan, War Horse stands as a must-watch spectacle.
War Horse features Outlander: Blood of My Blood star Irvine, who portrays time traveller and WWI veteran Henry Beauchamp in the fresh Starz series.
The Spielberg blockbuster served as the actor's first foray into feature films at the tender age of 21, having been handpicked from hundreds of hopefuls by the renowned Hollywood director.
The Outlander prequel series made its debut last week, and fans can catch a glimpse of the star back in the trenches in the first two episodes of Blood of My Blood.

Perrie Edwards says second devastating miscarriage was 'worst day of my life'
Singer Perrie Edwards has opened up about the 'horrendous' day she found out she had suffered a miscarriage. Perrie Edwards has bravely opened up about the "out of body experience" she felt when she discovered she had suffered a second miscarriage in 2022. The Little Mix star, 32, is mum to son Axel, who celebrates his fourth birthday this week, with her partner, former Arsenal footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, also 32. However, she has now revealed the heartbreaking loss they experienced less than a year after Axel's birth. "We went for what was a 20-week scan, but we were actually 22 weeks, and that was just the worst day of my life. Like horrendous. And I just knew something was wrong in the scan, and [the doctor] just kept going over the same thing, over the same thing... I've never experienced an out-of-body experience where everything goes in slow motion," Perrie recounted during a candid chat with Celebs Go Dating guru Paul C. Brunson on his podcast, We Need To Talk. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. [Alex] was injured at the time and he couldn't really drive. He was struggling to drive, but I couldn't see straight. I was just distraught. And yeah, we basically lost the baby at like 24 weeks." Perrie Edwards has bravely opened up about her heartbreaking experiences with miscarriage. The singer revealed that Axel, her son, is a "rainbow baby", a term used to describe a child born after a miscarriage or loss, reports the Mirror. She shared: "I had a miscarriage very early on with my first ever pregnancy, and it was so early. I remember finding out I was pregnant. Obviously, I started bleeding not long after, and I went to the hospital and I had the scan and they were like, 'There's no baby.'". The second miscarriage was particularly devastating for Perrie, as she and partner Alex had already begun preparing for their baby's arrival. "When you're fully, like carrying in your 24 weeks and you've planned out like that room and all these things, it's really hard. And nobody knows other than, like, immediate friends and family. And I remember, like, shortly after, like, friends would message and be like, 'how's the bump?' And I'll be like, there is no bump." Despite the heartache, Perrie cherishes her time being pregnant and is overjoyed to be a mum to Axel. "When I was pregnant with [Axel], like, I loved being pregnant, it was one of the happiest times of my life. Like, I just love carrying babies. And it was lovely. But I was a bit on edge thinking, oh, gosh, like, I want to get past the 12 weeks. I want to get past this. And when I get past every scan and that pregnancy was complete bliss, it was perfect." The South Shields-born vocalist has been dating footballer Alex, who currently plays for Turkish side Beşiktaş, since 2016, after they connected on celebrity dating platform Raya. The pair became engaged in 2022, with Alex arranging a romantic seaside proposal, though they've kept wedding plans under wraps. Before her romance with Alex, which Perrie characterises as "safe, calm and positive", the star was engaged to former One Direction member Zayn Malik. Both stars shot to prominence during their respective stints on The X Factor and dated for four years, starting when Perrie was just 19 years old before calling it quits in 2015. Reflecting on the "toxic" initial romance, Perrie confessed to Paul, "I think definitely at the time I thought everything we experienced in our relationship was normal. Because it was my first relationship, first love. I was like, 'Oh, this is how it's supposed to feel. It's supposed to feel a little bit toxic. In some ways, this is probably normal, right?' And then when I became single, I was almost thinking, like, I never, ever want to go through that again. I didn't even want to meet anybody. I was like, that's me done. I don't think I could bear that pain." Perrie went on to say that the ordeal has made her more appreciative of Alex's calming nature, "But now, reflecting back, I'm thinking, oh, that probably wasn't good. And I've noticed it a lot. Like in the start of the relationship, I would handle things differently with Alex, and he'd come at it with such a level head that it would throw me." BBC bosses 'forced' to pull Ozzy Osbourne documentary due to 'family complaints'
Ozzy Osbourne had been filming his return back to the UK after dreaming of making his comeback for years on end but the BBC film documenting it has been suddenly wiped from TV schedules A special documentary that is a "moving and inspirational account of the last chapter" of Ozzy Osbourne 's life was mysteriously rescheduled without explanation. Titled Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home, the programme was due to air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One this evening at 9pm, and is told through "unique and intimate access to the whole Osbourne family", including wife Sharon, and children Kelly and Jack. However, the one-off, hour-long documentary, which was announced at the start of this month, has now vanished from BBC TV listings and instead been replaced by Fake or Fortune. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes after his death at 76. Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy died aged 76 on July 22 from a reported heart attack, just weeks after reuniting with the band on stage as part of The Back To The Beginning farewell concert in Birmingham. Ozzy had been filming his return back to the UK after dreaming of making his comeback for years on end. His return home was set to be documented in the BBC TV film, however, fans were left disappointed when it was suddenly striped from listings last minute. A spokesperson for the BBC told the Mirror today that the "film has moved in the schedules" and new premiere details will be shared "in due course". The BBC hasn't explained why Coming Home was dropped at the last minute, but sources say the family's reaction to the final cut was a major factor. A source told The Sun: "There have been conversations behind the scenes that maybe the BBC were rushing their show on Ozzy out - especially because Paramount+ also had a film in the offing.' Initially, the series was meant to be a ten-part documentary called Home To Roost, chronicling Ozzy and Sharon's return to the UK. However, after Ozzy's passing, it was reworked into a one-off film. "What mattered the most to the family was the overall tone and theme of the programme, which features Ozzy and Sharon in one of their last interviews together," the insider said. "It started to feel like the goal being pursued was that the BBC and the makers of the film were to get the show on air faster than the Paramount+ doc. Naturally that has caused some concerns with the family," they added. The programme has been filmed over three years and "captures the extraordinary rollercoaster of their lives" as the Ozzy and Sharon "attempt to complete their long-held dream of moving back to the UK", the BBC said earlier this month when promoting the documentary. It also captures musician Ozzy as he "heroically battles to get fit enough to perform" and the family dealing with "the dramatic consequences of his ill health", with Kelly quoted as saying in the film: "Iron Man wasn't really made of iron." The rocker had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019. Clare Sillery, head of commissioning, BBC Documentaries, said on August 7: "We are honoured to have had the opportunity to film with Ozzy and his family. The film captures an intimate glimpse into their journey as they prepare to return to the UK. "It features family moments, humour, reflection and shows the enduring spirit that made Ozzy a global icon. We hope it brings comfort and joy to Ozzy's fans and viewers as they remember and celebrate his extraordinary life." Ben Wicks and Colin Barr, executive producers at production company Expectation, added: "It was an incredible privilege to spend the last few years with Ozzy , as well as Sharon, Jack and Kelly. Ozzy wanted to make it back to the UK and appear on stage one last time – our film is an inspiring and poignant account of him fulfilling that dream. "Ozzy was loved by millions around the world not just for his music, but for his sense of mischief and his honesty, all of which we saw plenty of in the final years of his life. But one thing shone through even more brightly to us, and that was Ozzy's intense love for his exceptional family who were by his side through it all." Last month, fans gathered alongside Ozzy's family to pay tribute to the star as a funeral cortege travelled through Birmingham. Sharon and the couple's children could be seen wiping away tears when they arrived at the Black Sabbath bench, where thousands of tributes, balloons and flowers were left. Musicians from Bostin Brass played Black Sabbath songs to accompany the cortege, and fans threw flowers at the hearse as it slowly passed through the city.
