Richie Wellens hails Leyton Orient's response to Huddersfield defeat

An own goal by Steven Sessegnon, who later saw red, and a strike from the impressive Josh Koroma gave the east-London outfit a deserved three points.
After coming off not only play-off final disappointment against Charlton in May, but also a three-goal reversal at Huddersfield last week, it was a welcome return to form for the hosts.
Wellens said: 'It's important when it's the first game of the season after a poor performance, that the new lads feel right in the environment.
'It was a good day for us. Wigan are a team that has won 3-1 and they've got some good players. I really like their front two and they've got a good manager who has managed higher.
'To limit them to the point that our goalkeeper Tommy Simkin didn't make a save was good. I thought we were really good in possession today.
'We worked hard this week in terms of being in the right areas, and our front three set the tone for us today.
'You win games when you have your front players firing. Two goals at home, clean sheet and a good atmosphere is very pleasing.'
Wigan's day started off badly when James Carragher hobbled off after just five minutes.
It got even worse for the visitors when Sessegnon chested the ball into his own net after a Koroma cross in the 18th minute.
Orient doubled their lead on the hour mark when Koroma picked up a through-ball and fired straight past the outstretched Sam Tickle.
Wigan offered little and Sessegnon's nightmare afternoon was completed when he saw red after a professional foul.
Substitute Joe White nearly added a third, but Tickle pulled off a great save from his free-kick.
Wigan manager Ryan Lowe could not hide his disappointment at his side putting in a lacklustre display.
'We beat ourselves, we didn't compete enough – we'll address it Monday morning,' he said.
'The fact of the matter is, when you don't compete you're not going to win. Last week we competed.
'It was a big blow losing James Carragher, then the own goal becomes a sucker punch. Overall, I'm disappointed with the players.
'They need to own it, and they do, because they've let us down and they've let over 700 travelling fans down.
'That was old Wigan Athletic today. I told the players if they play like that then they're out of the team.
'Leyton Orient wanted it more than us today, and that's the most disappointing thing.'

Chelsea target Xavi Simons in possible Christopher Nkunku swap deal with RB Leipzig

Chelsea are in talks with RB Leipzig over a potential swap deal for Xavi Simons that could lead to Christopher Nkunku returning to the German club. It is understood Leipzig would like to re-sign the France striker, who moved to Stamford Bridge on a six-year deal in 2023 for £52m but has failed to settle in west London, as a replacement for Benjamin Sesko after his £73.7m move to Manchester United. Chelsea have been in negotiations with the Bundesliga club over a fee for Xavi Simons, with the Netherlands forward having already agreed personal terms despite interest from Bayern Munich. Simons joined Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain in January for €50m (£43m) after two successful loan spells and had been expected to cost about €70m (£61m) but Chelsea are now pushing to include Nkunku, who they believe to be valued at £40m, as part of the deal. Negotiations are ongoing, with Chelsea likely to have to pay a sizeable fee on top for the 22-year-old, who can play in a number of attacking positions. Leipzig are also interested in signing Liverpool's Harvey Elliott, who has interest from several Premier League clubs. Chelsea remain in talks with United over a move for Alejandro Garnacho and are hoping to sell Nicolas Jackson to help balance the books. Newcastle have shown interest in the Senegal forward after missing out on Sesko and other targets, although they are believed to be waiting to see whether Liverpool make a new bid for Alexander Isak after turning down a £110m offer. Jackson, who missed Chelsea's 4-1 pre-season win over Milan on Sunday has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge after the arrivals of Liam Delap and João Pedro, with Eddie Howe's side believed to be frontrunners to sign the 24-year-old. He is understood to have trained alone on Friday after informing Chelsea that he would like to move, with Milan also linked with the 24-year-old. Chelsea had valued Jackson at £80m but are likely to accept a reduced fee of around £65m as they attempt to reshape their attacking options. Nkunku and Jackson were both left out of Friday's friendly against Bayer Leverkusen.

Revealed: Alejandro Garnacho's stance on possible Chelsea move after Man United set asking price for 'bomb squad' member - as Blues consider defensive signing

Alejandro Garnacho has set his mind on a move to Chelsea after Manchester United revealed their asking price. The Red Devils have been looking to offload Garnacho all summer, with the Argentine international one of the unwanted players placed into a 'bomb squad'. Garnacho was told by United boss Ruben Amorim to find a new club in May, after the winger was unhappy to start on the bench in the Europa League final. Chelsea hold strong interest in the 20-year-old, who is believed to be valued at £50million - significantly less than the £70m that United initially wanted. The Blues' hierarchy have no concerns over his character after doing their homework. In total Garnacho has played 144 games for United and has scored 26 goals, while he has provided 22 assists. He won the FA Cup with United in the 2023-24 campaign and the EFL Cup in the previous season. The Stamford Bridge club are still assessing whether to add another centre back for Enzo Maresca but intend to sell before making more buys. Nicolas Jackson remains an option for the likes of Newcastle while Christopher Nkunku is wanted by former club RB LEIPZIG as part of negotiations over Xavi Simons. Nkunku has a number of options but Chelsea would be open to reducing the fee for Simons by including the French forward in any deal. Leipzig are also keen on Chelsea's Tyrique George.
