Aston Villa 1 Fulham 0: Early Tielemans goal fires Villans level on points with Chelsea in race for Champions League
ASTON VILLA closed the gap on the Champions League places with a hard fought 1-0 win against Fulham at Villa Park. Villa's unsung hero this season Youri Tielemans' 12th minute header up Unai Emery 's side seventh in the table and level on points with Chelsea and Nottingham Forest. 4 4 4 Ollie Watkins missed a glorious chance to double Villa's lead on the brink of half-time, air-kicking Matty Cash's nippy cross. Before Ryan Sessegnon had the ball in the back of the net in the 55th minute for Fulham. But the former Spurs star's strike was ruled out for handball with VAR confirming the on-field call. Referee Rob Jones led the way, spotting a handball from Sessegnon as he tried to tame Antonee Robinson 's lay-off. Sessegnon initially took the ball down on his chest but the ball brushed his hand before he lashed a screamer beyond Emi Martinez's far corner. Emery went bonkers at Ezri Konsa for losing the ball in midfield, leading to another Fulham chance which Harry Wilson failed to take. Fulham 's chances kept passing them by, before Villa's Donyell Malen thumped an effort against the bar with Leno beaten. Villa, Chelsea and Forest all have 60 points on the board now, and all are chasing Champions League football next season. Chelsea are fifth and host champions Liverpool at home on Sunday, while Forest travel to FA Cup finalists Crystal Palace on Monday night. 'It is never over' on this 'rollercoaster ride'
Never leave a Fulham game Sessegnon's late winner on Saturday means Fulham have won the third-highest number of points from a losing position this coupled with the fact we have lost the second-highest number of points from a winning position, has defined this have given us the highs and lows that have punctuated this rollercoaster as games like Chelsea last week felt like sucker punches, late goals like Sess's against the Saints, his strike against Spurs, and Harry Wilson's injury-time double against Brentford have sent Fulham fans into raptures – and mean that we are still in the hunt for a European berth next of our late goals have come from substitutions. In fact, they have contributed 15 of our 50 strikes this season. One more of those would be a Premier League record, a testament to Marco Silva's ability to shuffle the are just four games of the season left – and each one feels like a cup final, as cliched as that sounds. Currently, it is in our own hands, but we have some tough fixtures travel to Villa Park next weekend to face an Aston Villa side desperate to squeeze into the top five. Then we host Everton, before a West London derby at the Gtech Stadium; we have picked up just one point there since Brentford moved to top it all off, Manchester City visit Craven Cottage on the final day. We will all be praying for a bit of daylight between us and the chasing pack by that point, or we could be suffering some late heartbreak once with Fulham it is never over until the final whistle. So, stay in your seats for the end of this more from Drew Heatley at Fulhamish, external
