Lens predicted XI v Strasbourg: Facundo Medina and David Pereira Da Costa out

Yahoo16-02-2025

RC Lens will be without key centre-back Facundo Medina when they face RC Strasbourg Alsace in Ligue 1 on Sunday afternoon. The Argentina international misses out through suspension after being sent off during the 2-0 defeat to OGC Nice last weekend.
Medina's absence is a blow for Will Still, who also lost Kevin Danso and Abdukodir Khusanov during the winter transfer window. With a lack of centre-backs at his disposal, he may opt to change to a four at the back against Strasbourg. Lens are, however, bolstered by the return of Ruben Aguilar. His return is timely given the departure of Przemyslaw Frankowski earlier in the week. He may not be the last player to leave Les Sang et Or. David Pereria Da Costa is also nearing a move away with a transfer to the MLS looming. He will therefore play no part in today's game. Mathew Ryan is also out.
Hervé Koffi; Deiver Machado, Malang Sarr, Jonathan Gradit, Ruben Aguilar; Andy Diouf, Neil El-Aynaoui, Adrien Thomasson; Angelo Fulgini, M'Bala Nzola, Goduine Kolayipou. (L'Éq)

England midfielder Angel Gomes reaches agreement in principle to join Marseille on free transfer

England midfielder Angel Gomes has reached an agreement in principle to join Marseille on a free transfer, the French club have announced. All four of the 24-year-old's international appearances came under interim head coach Lee Carsley in 2024, and he will now join Marseille after his contract at Ligue 1 rivals Lille expired this summer. The former Manchester United academy midfielder made 134 first-team appearances for Lille across four seasons, but an injury-hit 2024-25 campaign limited him to just 20 appearances and 10 league starts. Chelsea confirm Club World Cup squad: Andrey Santos, Liam Delap in; Djordje Petrovic out

Chelsea have confirmed their squad for the Club World Cup with Andrey Santos and Liam Delap included but no place for Djordje Petrovic. Chelsea kick off their campaign in FIFA's newly-expanded tournament next week, taking on Los Angeles FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday. As The Athletic reported previously, the club wanted to include the majority of the players who finished the 2024-25 Premier League campaign and won the Conference League in May as they see consider the new tournament as part of the same season. Advertisement Santos, 21, has been included after a successful loan spell at Strasbourg, the Ligue 1 club which shares its BlueCo owner with Chelsea. The Brazilian initially joined the French side in January 2024 after a disappointing first half of the 2023-24 campaign at Nottingham Forest. His loan at Strasbourg was extended last summer and he scored 11 goals in 34 games as Liam Rosenior's side finished seventh and qualified for the Conference League. Chelsea announced Delap's arrival earlier this month after triggering his £30m release clause at Ipswich Town. The 22-year-old striker scored 12 goals in 37 league games for Ipswich as they were relegated from the Premier League, having only joined them from Manchester City last summer. Petrovic spent last season alongside Santos at Strasbourg, and impressed but Chelsea have decided instead to take goalkeepers Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and new signing Mike Penders, who joined from Genk a year ago but spent last season at the Belgian club. They ended their interest in signing AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan before Tuesday night's deadline. Other loanees, such as Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling, have not been named in Maresca's squad. Chilwell joined Crystal Palace on loan in January but only played 11 times for the south London club, with just two of those as a starter, while Sterling featured 28 times for Arsenal across all competitions having signed for them last August. Mykhailo Mudryk is also missing. The Ukrainian has not played for Chelsea since November 28 after he was provisionally suspended by the Football Association (FA) in December for testing positive for meldonium, a banned substance. Chelsea and Mudryk have said he did not knowingly take any banned substance or break anti-doping regulations. Winger Estevao Willian will be at the Club World Cup, but will not be playing for Chelsea. Estevao will feature at the tournament for Brazilian side Palmeiras and then join up with Chelsea ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. Goalkeepers: Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Mike Penders, Gabriel Slonina Defenders: Marc Cucurella, Tosin, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Mamadou Sarr, Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James, Malo Gusto, Aaron Anselmino, Josh Acheampong Midfielders: Enzo Fernandez, Cole Palmer, Dario Essugo, Andrey Santos, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia Forwards: Pedro Neto, Liam Delap, Noni Madueke, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Tyrique George, Marc Guiu Chelsea were the first UEFA team to qualify for the Club World Cup as the winners of the Champions League in the four years before the tournament. They won Europe's premier club competition in 2021, with Real Madrid (2022, 2024) and Manchester City (2023) qualifying as the Champions League winners in later years. Advertisement In December 2024, FIFA agreed a deal with streaming service DAZN for the global rights to broadcast all 63 games, claiming it to be worth around $1billion. DAZN holds the option to sub-licence to local free-to-air channels. In the United States, 24 games across the group and knockout stages will be shown on TNT Sports' cable networks TNT, TBS and truTV. Every game will be shown on TNT's streaming service. As well as on DAZN, fans in the UK can watch 15 group games, four last-16 matches, two quarter-final games, one semi-final and the final on the free-to-air Channel 5. St. Pauli confirm Guilavogui departure

After Morgan Guilavogui impressed on loan at St. Pauli from Lens in the 2024/25 campaign, the Bundesliga side triggered a purchase option set at a reported €3 million to sign him permanently. However, the French striker won't be staying in Hamburg, as RC Lens have activated a buyback clause reportedly worth €4.5 million to bring him back. Advertisement FC St. Pauli confirmed the move on Wednesday. 'The plan we pursued with Morgan before the season worked very well. He slotted in outstandingly well, both in footballing terms and as a person," said St. Pauli's director of sport, Andreas Bornemann. "In view of the performances he put in, we would have liked to keep him here. We put that on record by exercising the purchase option, but because Lens had an option to buy him back, the final decision on Morgan's future was out of our hands.' Guilavogui scored seven goals and provided four assists in 27 appearances for St. Pauli during the 2024/25 campaign.
