Bengaluru to host Civil Defence mock drill under 'Operation Abhyaas' on Wednesday

BENGALURU: As part of 'Operation Abhyaas', a nationwide mock drill announced by the Union Government in 244 districts identified as vulnerable areas across the country, the Civil Defence exercise will be conducted in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Mock drills are also planned in Karwar and Raichur and the dates for the same are yet to be finalised. According to an official press release issued by the Karnataka State Police on Tuesday, the 244 districts have been categorised into Category I, II, and III based on the vulnerability assessment. In Karnataka, Mallapura (Karwar), Shaktinagara (Raichur), and Bengaluru have been included in Category II Civil Defence Towns by the Ministry of Defence.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directives, the first Civil Defence exercise under 'Operation Abhyaas' will be conducted at around 4 pm on Wednesday on the premises Civil Defence Head Quarters on Annaswamy Mudaliar Road, Ulsoor.
A senior Civil Defence officer said that the mock drill will include simulation of an incoming air raid, activation of sirens, prescribed response actions, and blackout measures. It will also involve rescue and search techniques during a building fire, casualty evacuation, setting up of temporary hospitals, and evacuation of civilians from endangered areas to bunkers and demilitarised zones. He said that during the mock drill, sirens will be activated in three phases, each producing a distinct alarm tone. 'These sirens can be heard up to a distance of approximately 3 km,' he said. Mock drills will vary across districts based on their assigned category.
Speaking to reporters, Prashant Kumar Thakur, Director General of Police and Commandant General of Home Guards, Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency Services, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), said sirens have been installed at 35 locations in Bengaluru, including police and fire stations. Of these, 32 sirens are currently functional, he said.
He added that the Union Government will issue advisories and guidelines outlining the dos and dont's for the general public. He also mentioned that the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), Civil Defence personnel, and medical professionals will participate in the mock drills.

The campaign involves active participation from Civil Defence personnel, Civil Engineering staff, and Railway Safety teams, who are engaging with the public across the Division through rallies, awareness drives and street plays. An awareness rally was flagged off from the Divisional Railway Manager's (DRM) Office, by Manoj Kumar Sahoo, ADRM (Operations), E Santharam, ADRM (Infrastructure), M.K. Sahoo, Senior Divisional Safety Officer and other officers on Friday. On this occasion, civil defence volunteeers performed a street play at the DRM Office Annex, Dondaparthi, highlighting the common risks and safe behaviour at level crossings. Addressing the gathering, ADRMs emphasised the importance of safety awareness at level crossings to prevent accidents and safeguard lives and property. The general public were urged to follow all safety guidelines and exercise caution when crossing railway tracks to ensure their own safety and that of others. The safety campaign is being coordinated by M.K. Sahoo, Senior Divisional Safety Officer, who has mobilised teams to conduct awareness activities throughout the Division. M. Satyanarayana, Principal, Divisional Training Institute, leading the engineering team, and K.Y. Reddy, Civil Defence Inspector, heading the Civil Defence contingent took active part in this campaign. As part of the campaign, intensified awareness drives will be carried out at level crossing gates, public areas, and locations near railway tracks, according to K. Saandeep, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager.

Odisha CM raises alarm over growing menace of plastic pollution

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday raised alarm over the escalating menace of plastic pollution in the state. While addressing the World Environment Day celebration in Bhubaneswar, CM Majhi stated that the unbridled use of plastic poses a triple threat- climate change, loss of biodiversity, and affects the ecosystems with pollution and waste. He called for a mass movement to eliminate plastic use from everyday life. On tackling pollution, the Chief Minister underlined the state's firm stance against single-use plastic. "We've banned single-use plastic and are actively promoting long-term sustainable alternatives. Waste management systems are being strengthened to ensure a cleaner and greener future," CM Majhi added. He also highlighted that the state government has launched the Clean Air Programme to reduce air pollution in densely populated urban areas and improve overall air quality. The Chief Minister also announced that the Odisha government will undertake the plantation of 7.5 crore trees this year as part of its aggressive green initiative. He noted that Odisha has seen a net increase of 560 square kilometres in forest cover, ranking fourth among all Indian states. "This achievement is a testament to our collective effort. Through the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, we've already planted over 6 crore saplings," he said. The Chief Minister stated that Similipal was recently designated as the 107th National Park by the Union Government. Under the 'Ama Similipal' scheme, the government has earmarked Rs 50 crore for enhanced protection of wildlife and biodiversity in the region. Meanwhile, speaking to media persons, Additional Chief Secretary Satyabrata Sahu, Odisha Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department, informed that the state will soon introduce Reverse vending machines (RVMs) for plastic waste collection in major urban centres. Sahu stated that seven cities across Odisha will also see the launch of a new Clean City Pilot Programme to intensify urban sanitation and waste segregation. He also stressed that single-use plastic continues to be a serious threat, and enforcement will be strengthened to strictly regulate its usage, especially during mass gatherings, picnics, and tourist seasons. "Plastic pollution is silently choking our environment. We urge citizens, institutions, and vendors to shift to eco-friendly alternatives. Enforcement will be tighter this year," warned Sahu.

VIJAYAWADA: In a major push for clean energy and women's welfare, the Andhra Pradesh government has initiated the distribution of energy-efficient induction cooktops and compatible utensils to 11,400 Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) across the state as part of the first phase of a statewide green initiative. The project, led by the Department of Women and Child Welfare, is aligned with the Union Government's 'Go Electric' campaign and the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP), spearheaded by the Ministry of Power, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). The official launch will take place on Thursday, June 5, in Vijayawada to mark World Environment Day. Minister for Women, Child Welfare and Tribal Welfare, G Sandhya Rani and others will formally inaugurate the programme.
