48 people die in passenger plane crash in Russias Far East, officials say
Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said earlier that it had found the burning fuselage of the Soviet-designed twin turbo prop plane on a hillside south of its planned destination in the town of Tynda, more than 7,000 km east of Moscow.
The plane, which was operated by the Siberia-based Angara Airlines, had initially departed from Khabarovsk before making its way to Blagoveshchensk on the Russian-Chinese border and onwards to Tynda.
It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash. Russia's Interfax news agency said there were adverse weather conditions at the time of the crash, citing unnamed sources in the emergency services.
Several Russian news outlets also reported that the aircraft was almost 50 years old, citing data taken from the plane's tail number.
Images of the reported crash site circulated by Russian state media show debris scattered among dense forest, surrounded by plumes of smoke.
Regional Gov Vasily Orlov said rescuers struggled to reach the site due to its remote location, 15 km south of Tynda.
The transport prosecutor's office in the Far East said in an online statement that the plane was attempting to land for a second time when it lost contact with air traffic control and disappeared from radars.
Orlov announced three days of mourning in the Amur region to mark the disaster, which he described as a 'terrible tragedy".
A previous statement from the governor said that 49 people had been onboard the flight. The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear.
The authorities have launched a probe on the charge of flight safety violations that resulted in multiple deaths, a standard procedure in aviation accidents.
Aviation incidents have been frequent in Russia, especially in recent years as international sanctions have squeezed the country's aviation sector. (AP) SCY SCY

Gita's teachings sole path to peace amid intolerance, says Karnataka Guv
Agency: Udupi (Karnataka), Jul 25 (PTI) Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Friday said in a world increasingly plagued by violence and intolerance, the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita offer the sole path towards achieving lasting peace. He was speaking after inaugurating the Sri Krishna Janmashtami Mandalotsava at Rajangana in Udupi organised by Paryaya Sri Puthige Matha today. The 48-day festival, steeped in spiritual and cultural tradition, will take place from August 1 to September 17. 'The life of Lord Krishna offers profound lessons in Dharma Yoga, Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. His teachings are timeless and especially relevant in the present era of unrest," Gehlot said. The Governor referred to Lord Krishna's guidance to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, stating that Nishkama Karma—performing one's duty without attachment—is a value the youth must adopt. 'Youngsters should embrace bhakti, kartavya and develop a fearless yet sensible mindset," he said. He praised the Sri Krishna Mutt in Udupi for being a beacon of Indian cultural and spiritual heritage. Gehlot also lauded Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji of Paryaya Sri Puthige Matha for spreading Sanatana Dharma globally through its branches. He said festivals like the Mandalotsava not only celebrate religious traditions but also promote social harmony and instil cultural pride. In a video going viral on the internet, an overworked jackfruit tree in Longchuan County, China's Yunnan province, has produced more than 400 fruits. In the video shared by China Xinhua News, the branches of the tree could be seen laden with numerous jackfruits that were not only growing from the ends of the branches but also from the middle. It is the largest tree fruit, reaching a weight of as much as 55 kg, a length of 90 cm and a diameter of 50 cm. Along with this, a mature jackfruit tree is known to produce about 200 fruits per year, with older trees producing 500 fruits in a year. When compared to this, the production of more than 400 trees is surely a surprising feat whose visual is truly mind-blowing. Why is jackfruit popular? Jackfruit is a tree well-developed in tropical lowlands. It is widely cultivated in countries such as India, Thailand, Indonesia and more. The name jackfruit comes from the Portuguese word 'Jaca', added by physician and naturalist Garcia de Orta in his 1563 book Colloquies on the Simples and Drugs of India. Jackfruit consists of a whitish core that has a distinctive sweet and fruity taste. It is a part of various culinary dishes across the globe. Additionally, with an ideal climate in regions such as Yunnan, which is known for jackfruit production, the tree growth can be improved. Additionally, China has effectively targeted increasing jackfruit production with the creation of the National Tropical Plants Germaplasm Resource Center-Jackfruit for germaplasm collection, where key actions and technologies are developed to increase the fruit cultivation. To ensure mass production, farmers may make use of practices such as pruning and canopy management, flower induction techniques and proper pollination support. What's important to note is that while more than 400 fruits may be set, jackfruits are known to shed prematurely if they overbear. Thus, not all of them may mature.
