Council wants to charge locals £70 to park outside their own homes
Residents will have to pay £70 to park outside their own homes, according to council plans.
Parking meters could be installed along roads within one kilometre (0.6 miles) of the seafront, with residents offered parking permits for £70, according to plans from Lib Dem-led Bournemouth, Christchurch and Pool (BCP) council.
Residents have accused the council of hypocrisy after it sold two 'key' seafront car parks, with the scheme labelled 'another attack' on motorists by the council, which has declared a climate emergency.
The local authority has previously been accused of causing traffic mayhem with prolonged roadworks to lay almost 50 miles of new cycle lanes in the area in an attempt to make travel more sustainable.
Plans for new parking meters come after a spate of 'Wild West' parking incidents as tourists left their cars on pavements, grass verges and even roundabouts.
Officials claim the extra revenue from the parking charges will help pay for more tow-trucks to take away illegally parked cars.
Motorists currently have to pay to park on most streets in the centre of Bournemouth but the large residential areas in Canford Cliffs, Branksome Chine and Westcliff, as well as Boscombe and Southbourne, are free.
Peter Schroeder, the chairman of the Branksome Park Residents Association, called the scheme 'stupid'.
He said: 'This proposal comes from the same council that is selling off key car parks. It is hypocrisy. We say no to residents paying to park their own cars on their own streets.
'We already have some of the highest council tax charges in the area. Charging residents and their guests and tradespeople doing work in houses and flats is a stupid idea.
'The council should give much stiffer penalties to those who do illegally park. £50 is probably nothing to them. If it was £1,000 they would think twice.'
Shaun White, a resident, said on social media: 'How is charging for parking spaces which are currently free going to prevent people from parking illegally on grass verges and double yellows?'
'Revenue for additional parking enforcement'
Last weekend, as thousands of tourists visited Bournemouth, more than 1,000 cars were ticketed for being illegally parked and ten were towed away.
Councillor Richard Herrett, the portfolio holder for destination, leisure and commercial operations at BCP Council, said: 'We welcome more than 10 million visitors annually to our seafront.
'We know at busy times we have a significant issue with illegal or inconsiderate parking. This significantly impacts road safety and can affect the quality of life for local residents.
'These proposals to extend seafront paid-for parking could generate revenue for additional parking enforcement and give us the ability to better enforce illegal parking across a wider area including increasing the number of vehicles which could be towed away in the worst parking instances.'
The proposal will now go out for public consultation before a final decision is made.

Reform UK council boss steps down leaving 18-year-old deputy in charge
A Reform UK councillor has resigned from his role as leader of Warwickshire County Council just five weeks after he was elected, leaving his 18-year-old deputy to take on the top job. Councillor Rob Howard said health problems are preventing him from carrying out the role, which he was selected for on May 16, 'to the level and standard I would wish' as he stepped down after 41 days in office. The county council confirmed the current deputy chairman, 18-year-old George Finch, will now serve as an interim leader until a permanent replacement is chosen. 'The role of leader is an extremely demanding role and regretfully my health challenges now prevent me from carrying out the role to the level and standard that I would wish. 'I am honoured and privileged to have held the role, even if only for a short time. 'I remain committed to my continued role working as a county councillor for the benefit of Warwickshire residents.' Mr Finch said in a statement to the PA news agency he would make sure the council was in 'steady hands' until a permanent leader is in place. He said: 'I extend my gratitude to Cllr Howard for his service to Warwickshire. I understand his reasons for taking the decision he has and look forward to working with him in the future. 'As interim leader I will ensure that this council is in steady hands until a new leader is elected by the group so that we can deliver meaningful results for Warwickshire. 'Our mission to deliver for residents remains unchanged.' Warwickshire County Council, which has alternated between a Conservative majority and no overall control since it was established in 1974, is under Reform control since the election on May 1. However, despite securing 23 seats ,the party fell short of the 29 needed for a majority. Alternative leadership nominations were made for Liberal Democrat councillor Jerry Roodhouse and Green councillor Jonathan Chilvers. Mr Howard won the support of 28 councillors in his selection as leader, while Liberal Democrat councillor Jerry Roodhouse won 15 votes and Green councillor Jonathan Chilvers 10, with one abstention. In a statement released by Warwickshire Liberal Democrats, Mr Roodhouse said Mr Howard's resignation was 'regrettable, coming so soon after taking it on'. He said: 'The instability in the leadership of the Conservative-backed Reform UK group is not good news. 'It's especially unwelcome when there are so many challenges facing the council, such as Send provision, adult social care and big highways projects.'

Britain must ‘actively prepare' for a war on home soil, major government review warns
The UK must prepare for the possibility of a ' wartime scenario' on home soil, a major new government review has warned. The National Security Strategy, published on Tuesday, has issued the grim warning as events in the Middle East and Russia's war with Ukraine continue to add to international instability. It comes just 48 hours after Iran threatened to target UK bases following the US attack on its nuclear facilities, before a ceasefire was announced last night. The strategy also recommends that UK citizens undergo 'national resilience exercises' in preparation for attacks at home. 'For the first time in many years, we have to actively prepare for the possibility of the UK homeland coming under direct threat, potentially in a wartime scenario,' the strategy warns. It added: 'The years ahead will test the United Kingdom ... The direction it takes – and the decisions we take – will reverberate through the decades.' It said the UK will need 'agility and courage to succeed', but adds the country should be optimistic in part because of the 'determination of the British people themselves'. 'After all, we do not need to look too far into our history for an example of a whole-of-society effort, motivated by a collective will to keep each other safe. We can mobilise that spirit again and use it both for our national security and the building of our country.' Cabinet minister Pat McFadden told MPs that the whole country had to be 'clear-eyed and hard-edged' about the threats that it faces. Sir Keir Starmer has announced that he intends to commit the UK to 5 per cent of GDP spending on defence and national security, on a trip to a Nato summit. Just hours later, his government published the strategy, which warns that Russian cyberattacks and sabotage and Iranian 'hostile activity' are increasing in the UK. In the document, ministers also promise 'greater robustness and consistency' in the way it deals with China. The government also plans to carry out a cross-government exercise on how to deal with crises, such as a future pandemic, later this year. On resilience training, the strategy requires the public, as well as business and academia, to adopt good practices on cybersecurity. 'It means asking the private sector to engage with law enforcement to protect people from harmful and illegal content online, and ensuring that human security remains at the forefront of AI,' the document said. 'This is the task ahead of us: to mobilise the nation in the common cause of our national security.' The public will be informed about the preparedness for risks, while there will be 'annual national exercises' to test society's preparedness, although there is not detail on what these will include. There will also be training for 'all those across our society' who play a vital role in national resilience, while critical national infrastructure will be protected in an effort to counter sabotage. Countries across Europe are also stepping up their preparations for potential warfare. Late last year, millions of Swedes were sent a pamphlet advising them on how to prepare and cope in the event of war or another unexpected crisis, as Russia's war in Ukraine continued to escalate. Around the same time, Finland also published fresh advice on 'preparing for incidents and crises'. Shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel accused the government of not being clear enough about how they would reach the core defence spending goal, claiming ministers had offered only 'smoke and mirrors'. She urged Mr McFadden to set out when he would 'actually deliver a plan to get to 2 per cent, and why won't he heed our calls to hit 3 per cent by the end of this parliament, which would be vital, and a vital stepping stone on the way to that higher defence spending that he is seeking'. Meanwhile, Mr Lammy has announced a £290m fund to reorientate the FCDO with 200 new data analysts as he cuts the number of diplomats. The foreign secretary wants a 'leaner and meaner' Foreign Office but is also using the money to invest in a new College of Diplomats. He told The Independent: "The National Security Strategy says that diplomacy allows us to achieve strength abroad and deliver security for the British people. 'I have committed to investing £290 million to make the FCDO the world's most tech-forward foreign ministry by 2030. Through this new fund, we will hire 200 more data and tech specialists and establish a College of British Diplomacy focused on the 21st century tools and tradecraft. 'These new tools and investment will liberate diplomats from their desks in Whitehall, putting them out into the world where they can make the biggest difference to the UK's growth and security.'

His resignation comes after chaos in the wake of Reform's surge at the local elections. One newly-elected councillor resigned from Reform just days after being elected, having promised to defect from the party anyway after the local elections. Donna Edmunds called for ousted Reform MP Rupert Lowe to establish a challenger party on the right of Reform and said Nigel Farage 'must never be prime minister '. Another, Wayne Titley, who was elected in Staffordshire, quit as a councillor altogether after just two weeks, following criticism of him for a Facebook post about small boats arriving in Britain. And a Reform councillor who failed to declare he worked for the council, Andrew Kilburn, also announced he would no longer take up his role, forcing a by-election in Durham just over a week after the local elections. Desmond Clarke, who won in Newark West, also resigned his seat just a week after the vote, forcing a by-election in Nottinghamshire. But the chaos does not appear to have slowed Reform's rise in the polls, with a major YouGov poll on Thursday indicating Mr Farage would win the most seats by far if an election was held today. YouGov said Reform would jump from having just five MPs to 271, with Mr Farage poised to form a minority government. Labour meanwhile would collapse from holding 403 seats now to just 178, with Sir Keir Starmer 's popularity having plummeted since the general election due to a series of disastrous policies and chaotic U-turns.
