Liverpool are in talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and are pursuing a deal for Parma teenager Giovanni Leoni. Arne Slot's Reds have been busy since winning last season's Premier League, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez among the summer arrivals. Liverpool have also seen a £110million bid rejected in recent weeks for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, but defensive reinforcements appear to be the current priority. The 25-year-old captained the Eagles to victory against Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley and is out of contract next summer. Guehi starred in England's run to the Euro 2024 final and will want regular game time ahead of next summer's World Cup. Liverpool are hopeful that the former Chelsea defender wants to join them but sources have denied reports that personal terms have been agreed. PA understands Liverpool are also interested in 18-year-old defender Leoni from Parma and are in talks with the Serie A side. The Italy Under-19 international spent time with Padova and Sampdoria before moving to Emilia-Romagna last year.

Evan Ferguson could find himself in the same team as Manchester United reject Jadon Sancho at Roma this season. The Serie A giants have been linked with a swoop for the England star, whose time at Old Trafford appears to be at an end. Sancho spent last season on-loan at Chelsea and he spent the second half of the previous campaign loaned back to his former club Borussia Dortmund. They have approached the Premier League side to make initial enquiries about a potential transfer, with new boss Gian Piero Gasperini a fan of the winger. Sancho moved to United from Dortmund in 2021, and played 79 games in his first two seasons, scoring 12 goals. However, he played just three times during the first half of the 2023/24 campaign and was loaned out that January to Dortmund. While he featured regularly for Chelsea last season, scoring five goals and contributing 10 assists, the Old Trafford hierarchy appear to be unmoved. And that could spell good news for Gasperini, who is believed to view Sancho as someone who can deliver quality service to Ferguson and the rest of his attackers. One of Roma's current wingers, Argentinean star Matías Soulé, meanwhile, has spoken about the ongoing development of his on-field rapport with the Ireland international. Soulé has so far played in pre-season with Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk - and he has enjoyed playing with the striking par so far. He said: 'I'm getting along really well with them. Ferguson has just arrived and we're still getting to know each other. 'We have slightly different playing styles, but we are all adapting to the new manager's approach, which is a far cry from last season's tactics. Transfers: Malick Thiaw on verge of completing Newcastle move
AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw was on Tyneside on Monday to undergo a medical as he closed in on a move to Newcastle. The 24-year-old Germany international flew in on Sunday after the two clubs agreed a fee understood to amount to an initial €35m. Thiaw has made 85 appearances for the Serie A club, which he joined from Schalke in August 2022, one of them in a 0-0 Champions League draw with the Magpies at the San Siro in September 2023. Should the deal go through, Thiaw will be head coach Eddie Howe's third senior recruit of a difficult summer following the capture of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and a loan move for Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Thiaw's arrival would strengthen a central defensive pool which currently includes Sven Botman, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles. It would also provide a measure of respite for Howe, who is having to contend with the ongoing search for new recruits while dealing with the situation surrounding want-away striker Alexander Isak. Newcastle open their Premier League campaign at Aston Villa on Saturday having won none of their pre-season fixtures and with their transfer mission far from complete.
