Jets OC Tanner Engstrand discusses his relationship with QB Justin Fields

USA Today12 hours ago
New York Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand will help dictate the success of the offense this coming season. Engstrand joins the East Rutherford-based club as head coach Aaron Glenn's debut hire to oversee the offense as the play caller. He's tasked with running the entire operation, but his relationship with starting quarterback Justin Fields is especially imperative.
The Jets signed Fields to a two-year contract this offseason to be their starting quarterback. Engstrand is tasked with building an offense around Fields' dual-threat passing and rushing abilities. The Jets expect Engstand to help improve an offense that finished 24th in scoring last season.
Engstrand recently spoke with the New York Jets' official podcast. The play-caller acknowledged the relationship between he and Fields is key to the offense's success.
"I think they have to think the same," Engstrand said about the relationship between QB and play caller. "They have to know what each other is thinking, so when I call a play, Justin or the other QBs, have to know what I'm thinking, and why I'm calling that play, so you really have to be on the same wavelength as far as what you're trying to accomplish on every play."
Engstrand spent the previous two seasons as the Detroit Lions' passing game coordinator (2023-24). He helped Lions OC and play-caller Ben Johnson oversee the league's most explosive offense throughout that stretch. Engstrand has never called plays at the NFL level, however, so this represents a big-time opportunity for him to separate himself from Johnson's success.
Prior to being Detroit's passing game coordinator, Engstrand spent three more seasons (2020-22) on the Lions' staff as an offensive assistant, quality control coach, and tight ends coach. Coach Glenn spent four seasons in Detroit on staff with Engstrand, hence the existing relationship.
Engstand is saying the right things, but he'll be judged by the results of the 2025 season.

Jonathan Toews, introduced by Winnipeg Jets, says signing with hometown team ‘really lit that fire again'

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Jonathan Toews is back in the NHL with his hometown Winnipeg Jets after a two-year absence. The three-time Stanley Cup champion was introduced Friday as the newest member of the Jets, donning a jersey with his signature No. 19 at a team news conference. The Jets announced their intention to acquire the 37-year-old center last month, but it only became official this week, with Toews signing a one-year deal worth $2 million, plus performance bonuses tied to games played and playoff success. The longtime Chicago Blackhawks captain last played in April 2023. He told reporters Friday he was grateful for the opportunity to return to the ice, let alone with his hometown club in front of friends and family. 'It's an honor and one that has really lit that fire again, that excitement for the game,' Toews said. 'You have these moments throughout your career where — I don't want to say you get jaded — but you get used to it and you kind of settle in. This is another moment that kind of brings me back to that new feeling like you're getting drafted again.' Chosen as one of the NHL's top 100 players from its first 100 years, Toews played 15 seasons with the Blackhawks and was one of the faces of the franchise. He also helped Canada win gold at back-to-back Olympics in 2010 and '14. Toews stepped away from hockey two years ago citing the effects of Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and long COVID-19. His exit coincided with the Hawks trading fellow star Patrick Kane and going into a full-scale rebuild. Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff called Toews' signing an exciting day for Winnipeg and said it's something he had been thinking about making happen for more than a decade. Cheveldayoff, an assistant GM in Chicago when Toews and the Blackhawks won the 2010 Stanley Cup, said that when he joined the Jets the following year, he and co-owner Mark Chipman mused about the possibility of seeing Toews in a Winnipeg jersey one day. 'At that point in time it was merely a dream or a concept,' Cheveldayoff said. 'Last week, when we finalized everything, I sent Mark a text and it said, 'Toews is a Jet.' It was an emotional feeling.' 'One of the most decorated hockey players in Manitoba history is coming home.' Toews is joining a Jets team that's coming off a Presidents' Trophy-winning season as the NHL's top regular-season team. Earlier this week, Winnipeg lost a key offensive piece when winger Nikolaj Ehlers signed a six-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Islanders' Calle Odelius excited at reuniting with Victor Eklund

The last time Victor Eklund and Calle Odelius were on the ice wearing the same uniform was two years ago with the under-20 team for Djugardens, the Stockholm-based club that Eklund helped get promoted to Sweden's top division last season. At the time, Odelius was in his first season after being drafted by the Islanders in the 2022 second round. Eklund was a 16-year-old, hoping to rise through the ranks. Now, Odelius is heading into his second full season stateside after coming over and playing with Bridgeport last year. Eklund is on Long Island for the week at development camp after getting picked 16th in last week's draft, and he is getting advice from his close friend on everything from how to navigate the Islanders' organization to the local golf offerings. 'Super fun. I'm super proud of him,' Odelius told The Post. 'He's a good friend of mine, and we played together in Djugardens and built some chemistry there. So hopefully, we can keep building that chemistry here on the Islanders.'
