The Print15-05-2025

Gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity had closed at Rs 96,850 and Rs 96,400 per 10 grams on Wednesday.
The precious metal of 99.5 per cent purity slumped Rs 1,800 to Rs 94,600 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes).
New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) Gold prices plunged Rs 1,800 to Rs 95,050 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday amid a decline in precious metal rates in the overseas markets, according to the All India Sarafa Association.
'Gold prices are declining as investors move away from safe-haven assets. The recent agreement between the US and China to reduce tariffs for 90 days has eased fears of a full-scale trade war,' Abans Financial Services' Chief Executive Officer Chintan Mehta said.
As uncertainty fades, investors are shifting towards riskier assets, leading to a drop in short-term demand for gold, Mehta added.
Silver prices also continuing its losing streak for the fourth straight day, declining Rs 1,000 to Rs 97,000 per kg (inclusive of all taxes).
The white metal had settled at Rs 98,000 per kg in the previous market session.
According to Axis Securities, the decline in bullion prices was reinforced by the stabilisation of geopolitical risks, notably the easing of India-Pakistan tensions and growing optimism surrounding potential US sanctions relief on Syria.
Globally, spot gold fell USD 16.81, or 0.53 per cent, to USD 3,160.71 per ounce.
Gold prices declined in the wake of easing geo-political risk in the global market, Pranav Mer, Vice President, EBG of Commodity & Currency Research at JM Financial Services, said.
Investors will be focussing on Russia-Ukraine peace talks, US macroeconomic data such as producer inflation, jobless claims and US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech later in the day, which could provide more impetus on the future trajectory for bullion prices, Mer added. PTI HG TRB

Delhi: Dwarka Expressway-Vasant Kunj tunnel approved; full details of mega project

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday that multiple projects worth ₹24,000 crores have been approved by the centre to reduce pollution and streamline traffic in Delhi and its adjoining areas. This will include a five-km tunnel between Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) and Nelson Mandela Road (Vasant Kunj). The projects, which were approved during a recent meeting with Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, will commence from early next year. The tunnel between Dwarka Expressway and Vasant Kunj will be constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. The project will include the construction of two underground tubes, with each tube having three lanes, which will offer a signal-free alternate route between South Delhi and Dwarka/Gurugram. Moreover, the tunnel will be equipped with facilities like ventilation, fire safety, CCTV, electro-mechanical systems, surveillance, control rooms, cross passages and emergency exits for efficient travelling. She explained that the tunnel will help in easing traffic congestion on Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and National Highway 48 (NH-48). The tunnel will also become significant in connecting multiple major expressways including the Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48), and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (NH-709B) via the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway, she added. CM Rekha Gupta called this project, the "foundation for the Delhi of the future," and said the tunnel will give a new direction to infrastructure in the national capital and bring relief to millions of citizens. Last week, CM Rekha Gupta said that the central government has given various road projects worth Rs.1.25 lakh crore to Delhi over the last years due to which key connectivity stretches are in the works, including an underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road and an elevated corridor from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport. BEE urges States to sustain momentum on energy efficiency

Vijayawada: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, expressed satisfaction over the active participation of all State Designated Agencies (SDAs) particularly the proactive Southern SDAs in the recent World Environment Day celebrations. BEE urged the SDAs to sustain this momentum by intensifying efforts to promote Behavior-Based Energy Saving Practices (2BESP), which are crucial in combating climate change and reducing electricity consumption. According to recent estimates, 2 BESP initiatives can potentially save up to 22.5 billion kWh of energy annually. BEE emphasized the need for targeted awareness and implementation campaigns at the State-level. During an interactive session on the impact of 5-Star Rated Appliances, senior BEE officials including Deputy Director General Dr Asok Kumar, Secretary Milind Deore and Directors Abhishek Sharma and Karman Sheik highlighted the importance of adopting high-efficiency appliances such as air-conditioners, refrigerators and ceiling fans to significantly reduce both electricity usage and consumer bills. The officials also encouraged SDAs to collaborate with Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Group Housing Societies to spread awareness about maintaining air-conditioner temperatures at 24°C or higher, in line with the Government of India's national energy efficiency campaign for both commercial and residential buildings. India's building sector currently accounts for 35–40 per cent of the country's total energy consumption. Against this backdrop, BEE reiterated that urgent adoption of energy efficiency measures by SDAs is critical to reducing energy demand, lowering costs and safeguarding the environment. The benefits of adopting energy-efficient appliances: A conventional 75W ceiling fan, used for 16 hours daily, consumes 1.2 kWh per day, resulting in an annual electricity bill of Rs 2,857 (at Rs 6.50/kWh). In contrast, a 32W Brushless DC (BLDC) fan, under similar usage, consumes only 0.51 kWh per day, lowering the annual bill to Rs 1,208—less than half the cost. Several states in the country - Andhra Pradesh (APSECM), Kerala (EMC), Karnataka (KREDL), Telangana (TSREDCO), and Tamil Nadu (TANGEDCO - in South have emerged as frontrunners in advancing BEE's mission. Their robust participation in the Standards & Labelling Programme helped achieve notable outcomes in 2022–23, including: Saving of 81.64 billion Units of electricity and in terms of money Rs 54,323 crore in energy cost savings. The BEE reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of energy efficiency across India and urged all SDAs to continue driving this transformative shift toward a more sustainable energy future.
