Meghan Markle's brutal blow after Prince Harry's 'bond with late Queen soured'
They may have tied the knot more than seven years ago - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced new explosive claims about tension in the lead-up to their wedding.
It is well known that the run-up to their nuptials in May 2018 was not all plain sailing, with Meghan's dad dropping out of attending the ceremony at the last minute. But now a royal author has laid bare claims that behind the scenes, Harry had left the late Queen 'dismayed' with some of the wedding arrangements - even saying that he almost 'blew' his relationship with his late grandmother.
Sally Bedell Smith claims that before her death, Lady Elizabeth Anson, a cousin of Elizabeth II and a high-society party planner, told her that the former monarch had become "very worried" about her grandson and that Meghan's intentions had been questioned.
Lady Anson, who is said to have made the comments, died in 2020 - and of course, the events leading up to the wedding were more than seven years ago now. And even though a significant amount of time has passed since the nuptials, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told the Mirror that in a recent move, it was Meghan who harked back to the past first.
She explained: "There have been too many reports about tensions in the weeks running up to Harry and Meghan's marriage to discount them. I think the old saying 'there's no smoke without fire' holds true.
"Lady Elizabeth Anson was certainly a very well-connected and informed source for these latest reports, which suggest that the Queen felt Harry was rushing into a marriage too quickly.
"Worse than that, it seems the Queen and other members of the Royal family doubted Meghan's sincerity and found her very difficult to deal with.
"It's extremely sad to think that the situation also soured the late Queen's relationship with her very much loved grandson, Harry: a young man she had nurtured and guided through the very worst time of his life, the death of his mother.
"Is it fair that all this is being brought up so many years later? Maybe not, but then perhaps Meghan shouldn't allude to lies being told about her eight years ago, which she did in a recent podcast.
"The fact is the royal story is always a source of curiosity and will sell books and papers, especially when there is a whiff of discord or scandal."
One bombshell claim made in Bedell-Smith's Substack is that the former monarch had been left shocked that Harry had asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the wedding ceremony without asking the Dean of Windsor first and that the now Duke of Sussex thought his grandmother could just "do what she wants".
And according to Bedell Smith, Lady Anson said that due to this, Harry had "blown" his relationship with his grandmother. She writes that Lady Anson told her several months before the wedding: "She [the Queen] said she was really upset. I was shocked when the Queen told me this, how she was so saddened. I had no idea about the conversation, that he was rude to her for ten minutes.
"They had tea with her the day before yesterday. She was trying to find out about the wedding dress, and Meghan wouldn't tell her."
However, the author later claims that several weeks closer to the nuptials, Lady Anson told her that Harry and his grandmother had "patched things up" after he let her into the details of what they had planned for their wedding. Bedell Smith says Lady Anson described Harry as "besotted and weak about women."
And now Jennie believes the claims show how much of a change there had been in Harry. She added: "It does seem quite out of character for Harry to disrespect his grandmother and, if he did, it is a sorry reflection of how his relationship changed him.
"He always claimed they had something special, and that she could confide in him in a way she did not with other family members. He suggested he was in some way her protector…making sure 'she had the right people around her.'
"The late Queen was meticulous about including both Harry and Meghan in statements she made about the situation and made it clear she would always regard them as part of the family. Whether she would still feel quite so magnanimous today is something we shall never know. I just hope Harry now feels it was all worth it."

Tragic nurse killed in Southend Airport plane crash was on first day of new job
Maria Fernanda Rojas Ortiz was on her first day aboard a private medical jet when it spiralled off the runway and nose-dived into the ground after taking off at Southend Airport. A nurse killed in a horror plane crash at a UK airport was on her first day on the job, it has been revealed. Maria Fernanda Rojas Ortiz, 31, is believed to have been on the Beech B200 Super King Air when it nose-dived off the runway at Southend Airport, Essex, yesterday. Friends today have confirmed she was a foreign national and married her partner last year, reports the Mirror. A pal said: "They were married last year. It was her first day on the job. She was a hospital nurse but then took a job with a private medical firm, she didn't tell anyone but this was her first day in the job. The firm that owns the plane says there were no survivors." The friend added: "Her wife can barely speak, she can't even call the police, she's beside herself. She's absolutely distraught." A GoFundMe page set up in Maria's memory has already begun raising cash to support her shattered family. The heartbreaking post said: "It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of our beloved Feña, in a tragic accident that is still being investigated by the authorities. We know that the pain is immense and shared by the many people who loved her and supported her at different stages of her life. In the midst of this difficult time, we want to organise to support her family. "This process entails many unexpected expenses—transfers, paperwork, possible travel, and everything necessary to say a proper goodbye. "We are starting this charity fundraiser among friends, colleagues, and those close to Feña. The idea is to raise funds that will then be delivered directly to her family, so they can use them for whatever they deem most necessary. "We will be fully transparent in our reporting of the contributions received and, if the family allows it, how the funds were used. "Thank you so much for being there, for the love, for the support, and for everything each of you has done during these difficult days. We hug everyone who loved her and we'll stay in touch to support each other and organise. We love you, Feña." Police have still to release details of those who died in the crash but on Monday confirmed that all four passengers were killed. Chief Supt Morgan Cronin said the victims were all believed to be foreign nationals and work is taking place to confirm their identities. "Those who have passed away will be treated with the utmost care and dignity," he added. Flight tracking data showed the plane which was heading for Lelystad in the Netherlands attempted take-off at around 3.45pm before it suddenly veered and crashed. Shocking footage shows golfers at nearby Rochford Hundred Golf Club running towards the burning wreckage minutes later. Zeusch Aviation, based at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands, confirmed its SUZ1 flight had been "involved in an accident". In a statement said the company was "actively supporting the authorities with the investigation", adding: "Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected." A statement from the airport added: "All flights to and from the airport have been cancelled while police, emergency services and air accident investigators are attending the incident. We ask that any passengers due to travel tomorrow (Monday) via London Southend Airport contact their airline for information and advice." It comes after reports of the pilots having "waved to kids" at the airport moments before the horror crash. Online flight trackers showed the plane taxiing as it prepared to lift off before veering off the runway. Witnesses described seeing a "huge fireball" at around 4pm. One eye witness wrote on X: "Just witnessed a Beechcraft crash on take-off at Southend airport about 40 minutes after a Cessna also left the runway. Thoughts are with those on the aircraft. "Absolutely tragic. Was waving to the aircrew just moments before." John Johnson, who witnessed the crash with his family, said: "We all waved at the pilots, and they all waved back at us. The aircraft then turned 180 degrees to face its take-off, departure, powered up, rolled down the runway. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "It took off and about three or four seconds after taking off, it started to bank heavily to its left, and then within a few seconds of that happening, it more or less inverted and crashed just head first into the ground. There was a big fireball. Obviously, everybody was in shock in terms of witnessing it. All the kids saw it and the families saw it. I phoned 999, reported it." He added: "I'd say that we're pretty shaken up. I just feel sad for the people who were on the plane and, of course, their loved ones and their family, our thoughts are with them."

UK's oldest lido left to rot despite £9.3million revamp 18 months ago
A STUNNING lido with quaint sandstone surround has been lying closed since early 2024, despite a multi-million pound makeover. Cleveland Pools was open for just four months after receiving over £9 million for a revamp - and it hasn't reopened since. 4 4 The pool in Bath is the UK's oldest lido and reopened in 2023 after 40 years of closure. The locals were delighted after they pursued a 20-year campaign to reopen the pool in Somerset. When it opened its doors for the very first time in September 2023, tickets for the Sunday free swim were so popular that the system crashed. Despite its popularity, just four months later, the lido was forced to close again after it was completely flooded by heavy rainfall during Storm Henk. At the time, Cleveland Pools Trust apologised and Paul Simons, chair of the trust, said: "Once the river level has dropped the pools will be pumped out, jet washed down, re-filled and then the treatment circulation will recommence. He added that the time frame for that "should take a number of days, not weeks." Fast forward almost two years, and the lido has still not reopened. To make matters worse, the lido has fallen into disrepair, leaving locals angry that all that work resulted in only a month's use the pool. Talking to the BBC, one man said the lido has become "filthy". He told them: "It's a mess, it's full of leaves - it's sad because I think that money could have been so better spent." Historic UK lido with 'stunning' mountain views that has been abandoned for decades 4 There are a lot of historic lidos across the UK that are currently hoping to reopen - like Sharpness Point in Tynemouth. The outdoor pool at Sharpness Point in North Tyneside has been closed since the mid-90s and locals want it restored. The lido has been around for 100 years, and now the community is campaigning to restore it for the possible cost of £10 million. On its debut weekend back in 1925, thousands of people descended to use the lido, with people staying until it closed at midnight. It was originally a salt water tidal pool, and a popular venue for local families and day-trippers until it closed in the mid-1990s. However, with warmer summers and the appeal of outdoor swimming returning, locals want it to reopen. Recently, a group called Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool have been running a campaign to revive the site. For anyone wanting to take a dip to beat the heat, here are all the lidos in the UK mapped – with water slides, cocktail bars and some are even FREE to enter. Plus the UK lido that will reopen this summer after three years – and an £8.75 million upgrade. 4
