Whanganui High School bus crashes into cars in afternoon accident
The crash happened as students at Whanganui High School were heading home for the day. (File photo) Photo: Google Maps / Supplied A school bus collided with two cars in Whanganui as students headed home for the day. The principal of Whanganui High School, Martin McAllen, posted about the incident on the school's social media page and said it happened at 3.10pm as students were finishing for the day. "The Brunswick bus pulled out of the bus bay area and hit a car travelling along Purnell St," he said. The bus then hit another car parked on the other side of the street before it accelerated up the driveway of a house. McAllen said the first car, which had a person inside, spun into the school's green wooden fence opposite its library. "It is extremely fortunate that no students or adults were hit by the bus or car at any stage of the incident," McAllen said. "Students on the Brunswick bus moved onto the next available bus and on to the Whanganui City College bus inter-change area, and their various journeys home." Police, Tranzit group bus representatives, a first responder and an ambulance arrived at the scene quickly, McAllen wrote, and the road was blocked from traffic for a time. "Many of our staff members and members of the public assisted and worked together to keep the situation as calm as possible for everybody involved. "Some students will still be shaken by the incident. Please contact me directly if you have any concerns," he said. A police spokesperson confirmed officers were sent to the crash shortly after 3pm on Monday. There were no serious injuries and police were making inquiries, the spokesperson said.
