Used Cybertruck prices plunging to 'insane' levels, report says

SAN JOSE: Tesla's much-hyped Cybertruck is turning into a financial disaster for owners as prices drop sharply for second-hand examples on the US used car market, US electric transport website Electrek reports.
After a year of refusing trade-ins, the EV giant has begun offering deals on used Cybertrucks, but owners are aghast then they hear how little money is on the table.
Tesla is offering just US$65,000 (RM 276,464) for a US$100,000 (RM 425,329) electric truck bought in 2024 with 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles) on the odometer. This was according to an owner who shared the information with the Cybertruck Owners Club, the website said.
Another buyer has covered 51,499 kilometres (32,000 miles) in his Cybertruck and received an offer of US$60,500 (RM 257,324) . This equates to a loss of 39.5% over the purchase price.
The pick-up already faced criticism for its futuristic stainless-steel-clad body, which some owners say is prone to rust spots. The trucks have also been recalled for minor problems several times and Tesla has dropped plans to offer a useful range extender.
Meanwhile Tesla owners have become worried about attracting vandalism after a string of cars in several countries were damaged and set on fire in protest against Tesla boss Elon Musk's support for far-right politics, massive accumulated wealth and sharing of misinformation.
Electrek, which first reported the trade-in offers, described the devaluation as "insane" and said the Cybertruck has been "a commercial flop".
The low trade-in value appeared to reflect a glut in supply of the vehicle, with Tesla's Cybertruck inventory reportedly reaching a record high of 10,000 units this month. Tesla was reportedly having to offer heavy discounts to shift them.
At one point, Tesla boasted having over one million reservations for the electric pick-up truck, but only about 40,000 people ended up converting their reservations into orders, said the report.
Data from Tesla-info.com, which tracks listings in the US, suggests Tesla has unsold Cybertrucks worth around US$800mil (RM3.4bil).
The Cybertruck was first revealed in 2021 but production only began in November 2023, with customer deliveries following later that month. – dpa/Tribune News Service

Petronas to cut 10 pct of workforce amid oil price slump, freezes hiring until 2026

Tengku Muhammad Taufik added that Petronas will also freeze all promotions and hiring until December 2026. – AFP photo KUALA LUMPUR (June 5): Petronas will cut about 10 per cent of its workforce as part of a major restructuring to reduce costs amid falling crude oil prices, financial news agency Bloomberg reported today. The state-owned oil and gas company plans to cut more than 5,000 jobs, CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said in a media briefing here. 'All those affected will be informed by the end of the year,' he was quoted as saying. He added that Petronas will also freeze all promotions and hiring until December 2026. 'The margins are shrinking, the fields are getting smaller. 'It will be challenging to meet dividend targets' with current oil prices, he added. Petronas contributes to some 10 per cent of Malaysia's revenue in 2024 through dividends and taxes. Tengku Taufik said Petronas had based its budget on Brent oil prices at around US$75 to US$80 per barrel. According to Bloomberg, the global benchmark is currently hovering near US$65 per barrel. Prices have fallen about 13 per cent this year as trade tensions weigh on global growth and OPEC+ increases production. Petronas' net income dropped 32 per cent in 2024, after a 21 per cent decline in 2023. – Malay Mail job cuts oil price slump Petronas

South Korea's new President Lee begins moves to tackle economic 'crisis'

South Korea's new president Lee Jae-myung and his wife Kim Hye-gyeong following his inauguration ceremony at the National Assembly in Seoul, South Korea, on June 4, 2025. - Bloomberg SEOUL: South Korea's new President Lee Jae-myung held his first cabinet meeting on Thursday (June 5) focused on devising an emergency package to address stagnating economic growth and aid households, moving swiftly to start tackling a top campaign pledge. Lee took office on Wednesday just hours after riding a wave of anger over a brief martial law imposed by Yoon Suk-yeol to win the snap election. The attempt at military rule led to Yoon's ouster and sent shockwaves through Asia's fourth-largest economy. In brief remarks open to the media, Lee told the cabinet carried over from the caretaker government put in place following Yoon's impeachment in December that there was no time to waste in getting to work as the people were facing hardship. Lee has so far only nominated a close political ally and legislative veteran as prime minister and is racing to form a cabinet and staff his office to maintain continuity in administration. The new leader expressed bewilderment on Wednesday after walking into the presidential office to find it stripped of computers, printers and even pens and was quiet like "a graveyard" with government officials who had been assigned there sent back to their posts. Most of the officials have been ordered back, Lee's spokesperson said on Thursday. Lee has made economic recovery one of his top priorities and vowed to immediately unleash fiscal spending of at least 30 trillion won (US$22 billion) to boost growth, which was projected by the central bank in May to be almost half of its earlier estimate this year at 0.8%, down from 1.5% in February. Kim Min-seok, whose appointment as prime minister requires parliamentary approval, said on Wednesday the country was facing even more economic turmoil than during the Asian financial crisis of 1997, complicated by unfavourable external factors. "Today, the economy is heading downward and stagnating, which is why I believe it's much more difficult," he told reporters. The previous government had made little progress in trying to assuage crushing US. tariffs that would hit some of the country's major export-reliant industries, including autos, electronics and steel. Lee faces what could be the most daunting set of challenges for a South Korean leader in decades, analysts said, ranging from healing a country deeply scarred by the martial law attempt to tackling unpredictable protectionist moves by the United States. On Thursday, Lee withdrew the nomination of two judges to the Constitutional Court, made by acting President Han Duck-soo before the election, his office said. Lee previously said Han had no power to nominate judges as an unelected acting leader. The ruling Democratic Party-controlled parliament also passed on Thursday special counsel acts to investigate former President Yoon on insurrection charges and his wife Kim Keon-hee over corruption allegations. The party had previously passed the special counsel acts on multiple occasions, but they were repeatedly vetoed by Yoon and then the acting president. Yoon is currently facing a separate trial on insurrection charges. - Reuters

DOGE in disarray: Leadership vacuum looms large after Musk exit

WASHINGTON, June 5 — The Department of Government Efficiency, the brainchild of Elon Musk that upended Washington with its rapid-fire drive to slash thousands of federal jobs and cut costs, is effectively leaderless now that the billionaire and his deputy have stepped down, US lawmakers heard on Wednesday. US President Donald Trump's budget chief, Russ Vought, told a congressional committee that efforts are under way to establish new leadership at DOGE, but its staff currently answer to Trump's cabinet secretaries. 'The Cabinet agencies that are in charge of DOGE, the consultants that work for them are fundamentally in control of DOGE,' Vought said. 'We're in the midst of establishing the leadership on an ongoing basis.' Vought's comments will only add to the uncertainty around the future of DOGE and its cost-cutting effort following Musk's announcement last week that he was ceasing work as a special government employee. A key lieutenant, Steve Davis, who was in charge of day-to-day running of DOGE, has also left. The White House has said that DOGE's mission will continue in the absence of Musk, who has since publicly broken with Trump over his sweeping tax cut and spending bill, calling it a 'disgusting abomination.' The rapidly receding power and influence of DOGE was almost unthinkable as recently as a few weeks ago when it dominated the political landscape in Washington with its aggressive push to fire a swath of government workers. Trump established DOGE to streamline what he says is a bloated and inefficient government. DOGE struggled to cut costs but was more successful in pushing thousands of workers to quit or take early retirement after threatening dismissal without benefits. It is unclear if DOGE and its cadre of young computer technicians will survive in Washington without Musk, especially as some members of Trump's cabinet have soured on DOGE's tactics. — Reuters
