You can go ask any college football recruiter whether they'd be more impressed with a high school player who spends the majority of time in offseason seven-on-seven competitions or working on other skills in track and field? They'd always say track.
Darren Haggerty of Viewpoint High is an example of a football player who's going to benefit from showing what he can do in track and field.

On Saturday, he pulled off career-best performances to win the Division 4 high jump at 6 feet, 6 inches and the long jump at 22-8 at the Southern Section championships at Moorpark High. He helped Viewpoint share the Division 4 title with Gardena Serra.
He was a little shocked afterward, not knowing he had it in him. He was considered Viewpoint's best football player last fall as a sophomore, leading the team in receiving with 39 receptions for 674 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 37 tackles on defense. …
Quarterback Luke Fahey led Mission Viejo to the championship of the Millikan seven-on-seven tournament, beating San Diego Lincoln in the final. San Juan Hills won the tournament at Dana Hills and Charter Oak took its own tournament title. …
The semifinals are set for City Section Division I baseball on Wednesday at Stengel Field in Glendale. It will be No. 5 Verdugo Hills vs. No. 1 Banning at 6 p.m. and No. 11 Taft vs No. 2 Carson at 3 p.m.

Rasmussen extends scoreless streak to 23 innings as Rays beat Rangers 5-1
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Drew Rasmussen extended his MLB-leading scoreless streak to 23 innings with five innings of one-hit ball and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Texas Rangers 5-1 on Tuesday night. Rasmussen (5-4) allowed only a single to Jake Burger in the third inning and struck out eight in a game that was delayed for less that 20 minutes due to rain in the third in front of an announced crowd of 9,131 at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Kameron Misner put Tampa Bay on the board with a solo homer in the second inning. In the sixth inning, Yandy Diaz scored on a wild pitch by the Rangers' Jacob Latz. Jonathan Aranda scored on an infield single by Jake Mangum before Junior Caminero stole home when Misner struck out looking. Caminero homered in the eighth, his fifth long ball in the last six games, to complete the scoring for Tampa Bay. Burger had two of Texas' four hits, including an RBI single in the seventh inning. Tyler Mahle (5-3) allowed five hits, four earned runs and three walks in 5 1/3 innings, striking out five. Key moment With runners on the corners and one out in the sixth, Caminero raced home on a steal. The Rays' third baseman instinctively took off for home when Rangers catcher Kyle Higashioka released a throw to catch Jake Mangum stealing second. Because Caminero took off before Higashioka's throw passed shortstop Corey Seager, he was credited with the rare steal of home. Key stat Rasmussen has not allowed a run over his last four starts, dating to May 17. In that span, Rasmussen has struck out 21, walked three and allowed 10 hits. It was the 14th straight game in which a Rays starter allowed three runs or fewer. Up next Texas RHP Kumar Rocker (1-3, 8.10 ERA) is expected to come off the injured list and make his ninth MLB start. Smith and Taylor help the White Sox cool off the Tigers with an 8-1 victory
CHICAGO — Shane Smith pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Tuesday night to stop a four-game slide. Michael A. Taylor homered and drove in four runs for Chicago, which had dropped seven of eight overall. Smith (2-3) struck out six in 5 1/3 scoreless innings for his first win since April 24. It was the first home win for the White Sox against the Tigers since June 4, 2023. They had lost a franchise-record 11 straight home games versus Detroit. Dillon Dingler hit an RBI double in the seventh to account for the Tigers' only run. The AL Central leaders had won seven of eight, including a 13-1 victory in the series opener. Taylor started in center field in place of Luis Robert Jr. , who is making some adjustments at the plate and got the day off. Chicago opened a 4-0 lead when Taylor hit a three-run drive off Tyler Holton with two out in the sixth. It was his third homer of the season. Austin Slater tacked on a two-run double in the seventh against Dylan Smith on a bullpen day for Detroit. The Tigers went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine overall. Chicago jumped in front in the fourth. Brenan Hanifee replaced Brant Hurter (2-1) and committed a throwing error to help set up Taylor's bases-loaded walk. The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but Wenceel Pérez struck out swinging against Brandon Eisert before Dingler lined out to right. The White Sox improved to 3-15 against the AL Central this season. They went 10-42 against the division last year. Brewers' Brandon Woodruff leaves rehab appearance after a line drive hits his right elbow
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff took a line drive to his throwing elbow during a rehabilitation appearance with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. Woodruff left the game after getting struck by a batted ball from Gwinnett's Cade Bunnell that had a 108-mph exit velocity. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said after the Brewers' 4-2 loss in Cincinnati on Tuesday night that his understanding was that X-rays on Woodruff were negative. Murphy added that Woodruff would undergo a CT scan on Wednesday. The incident could cause one more delay in Woodruff's long-awaited return to the majors. The two-time All-Star last pitched in a major league game on Sept. 23, 2023. Woodruff missed the Brewers' 2023 postseason with a shoulder injury that required surgery and prevented him from pitching last year.
