Row erupts on Israel envoy's response on Priyanka Gandhi
The Congress bristled at the tone and tenor of Azar's comments in a social media post, which were also criticised by leaders of other political parties. The envoy's remarks led to calls by the Congress for an intervention by the Central government.
Priyanka Gandhi, in a scathing attack on the Union government's stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict, said in a social media post: 'The Israeli state is committing genocide. It has murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children. It has starved hundreds to death, including many children and is threatening to starve millions.'
She added, 'Enabling these crimes by silence and inaction is a crime in itself. It is shameful that the Indian Government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine.'
She had earlier described the killing of Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza as 'cold-blooded murder' by Israel.
Azar lashed out at the Congress leader about two hours later, saying in a social media post, 'What is shameful is your deceit. Israel killed 25,000 Hamas terrorists. The terrible cost in human lives derives from Hamas's heinous tactics of hiding behind civilians, their shooting of people trying to evacuate or receive assistance and their rocket fire.'
He added, 'Israel facilitated 2 million tonnes of food into Gaza while Hamas tries to sequestrate them, thereby creating hunger. The Gaza population has grown by 450 per cent in the last 50 years, no genocide there. Don't buy Hamas numbers.'
Senior Congress MP Jairam Ramesh criticised the envoy, saying, 'The Indian National Congress condemns the words used by Israel's Ambassador to India in response to the pain and anguish expressed by Smt. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, MP, on Israel's continuing genocide in Gaza.'
Ramesh said it would be 'too much to expect the Modi Govt, which has shown extreme moral cowardice when it comes to speaking out on Israel's destruction of Gaza over the past 18-20 months, to take serious exception and objection to the Ambassador's response. We do and find it totally unacceptable.'
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi joined the criticism, saying, 'Hope @MEAIndia reprimands this Hon. Ambassador. Earlier, I had wanted to move a privilege motion against the Polish Ambassador (now former) for his tweet attack on me, but after a discussion, the EAM chose not to raise it. However, this is emboldening them to speak to Indian parliamentarians in this tone and tenor while in our own country. This is unacceptable.'
However, BJP leader and former MP Ramesh Bidhuri linked Priyanka Gandhi's comments to what he claimed was a connection between Hamas and the Congress. 'If you look into Priyanka Gandhi and the Congress's background, you will find a link to Gaza,' he told reporters.
There was no official word from the external affairs ministry on the matter.
People in diplomatic circles said such public criticism of an Indian MP by a foreign envoy was unprecedented.
Following the terror attacks by Hamas on Israel in October 2023, India had expressed solidarity with the Israeli government in keeping with its policy of 'zero tolerance' for terrorism. India subsequently sought to nuance its position after this did not go down well with its partners in West Asia.
India has called for the end of hostilities in Gaza, the release of all hostages taken by Hamas, unfettered access for providing humanitarian assistance to the people in the Gaza Strip, and a return to dialogue and diplomacy aimed at a two-state solution.

Israel set to expand settlements into West Bank to 'bury' Palestinian state
Israel plans to expand settlements into an area of the West Bank that would effectively bisect the enclave — a move its finance minister said 'buries the idea of a Palestinian state.' The expansion into the 3,000 acres known as E1 that run between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim — long excluded from settlement plans — would amount to a major rebuke of growing Western calls to recognize Palestinian statehood. It comes as the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has authorized a large-scale increase in settlement building in the West Bank — widely considered a violation of international law — over the past year and plans to take over the Gaza Strip. 'Anyone in the world who tries to recognize a Palestinian state will get our answer on the ground,' said Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who also oversees settlements within Israel's Defense Ministry, according to a transcript of a speech he gave at E1. 'They'll talk about a Palestinian dream, and we'll keep building a Jewish reality.' 'After 20 years of hold-ups, pressure, election-eve promises and broken dreams — we stand here in Ma'ale Adumin and proclaim in a clear voice: the cork as been broken, the E1 project is under way,' said Smotrich, an ultranationalist settler who in June was sanctioned by the UK for inciting violence against Palestinian communities. He said 3,401 homes would be built there. The West Bank-based administration of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the announcement. Pak awards military officials for their services during conflict with India
The Pakistan government on Thursday awarded dozens of civilian and military officials, including ministers and services chiefs, for their role in the four-day conflict with India. The awards were conferred by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. Following the Indian action, Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10. India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes. It was the first Independence Day anniversary since the conflict with India in May brought the two countries within the shadow of an all-out war. Army chief Asim Munir was awarded Hilal-e-Jurat, while Nishan-e-Imtiaz was conferred upon Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza. Air Chief Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu was awarded Hilal-e-Jurat, while Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf was awarded Nishan-e-Imtiaz. The fighter pilots of the Pakistan Air Force received Sitara-e-Jurat for their role during the aerial combat. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Prime Minister's Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah were decorated with Nishan-e-Imtiaz. Members of the Prime Minister's diplomatic mission were also awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz for highlighting Pakistan's position abroad after the conflict with India. According to the army, 488 personnel from the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Navy were awarded. It said that eight Sitara-i-Jurat, five Tamgha-i-Jurat, 24 Sitara-i-Basalat, 45 Tamgha-i-Basalat, 146 Imtiazi Asnad, 259 COAS Commendation Cards and one Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Military) were conferred. The government also conferred Sitara-i-Basalat on the ISI chief Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik, who is also the National Security Advisor, and on Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the army spokesperson. Air Vice Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed, the spokesperson of the Air Force and Vice Admiral Raja Rab Nawaz, spokesperson of the Navy, were also awarded Sitara-i-Basalat. The two were involved in briefing the media during the conflict with India.

‘Be the president of peace', released Hamas hostages urge Donald Trump to end war in Gaza
Six former hostages of Hamas and the widow of another hostage executed by the militant group have urged US President Donald Trump to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of those still held in captivity. In a video posted on X by Bring Them Home Now, Naama Levy, Ohad Ben Ami, Doron Steinbrecher, Sasha Troufanov, Arbel Yehoud, Iair Horn and Michal Lobanov, the wife of Alexander Lubanov who was executed by Hamas, thanked Trump for facilitating the return of 39 hostages. 'President Trump, we want to thank you for bringing us home. We know it wasn't easy. Your leadership, and your courage, gave us back our lives and our families. We are here today – because you chose to act,' Levy, who spoke first, said in the video. 'President Trump, you have the power to change history, to be the 'president of peace' who ended the war and suffering, and brought all the hostages home,' Iair Horn, another released hostage, said. 'Every bullet, every strike, could be the one that ends their life,' another released hostage, Troufanov said, while urging Trump to secure the release of the remaining hostages. 'Every single one needs to come back home,' Yehoud, whose partner is still held in Gaza, said. 'You have the power to make history — to be the president of peace, who ended the war, ended the suffering, and brought every hostage home, including my little brother,' Horn, whose brother is one of the remaining hostages, said. 'When I heard that our government intends to extend the war in Gaza, I as a mother am afraid, because we know that Hamas gives commands…to kill the hostages whenever (our military) is getting close to them,' said Viki Cohen, the mother of Nimrod Cohen, an Israeli soldier who is still being held captive in Gaza, said. Galia David, the mother of Evyatar David, the Israeli hostage who was seen in the recent Hamas video, also said she was 'really afraid'. 'We know from hostages who were released that there are hard stories, that they are even more evil with them when there is fighting,' she said.
