UTS hosts ‘Jom Berambeh' to celebrate multicultural spirit

SIBU (April 29): The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) Staff Recreational Club hosted a 'Jom Berambeh' programme at its campus today to mark the celebration of three major cultural festivities in Sarawak ― Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and Gawai Dayak.
UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid, when officiating at the event, said the gathering served as a reflection of the unity and harmony among Sarawak's multi-ethnic society, particularly for the benefit of foreign staff at the university.
'This gathering is important as we spend a great deal of time together on campus as colleagues,' he said.
Khairuddin also expressed hope that the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect would continue to flourish among the staff.
'Let us carry out our duties with intergrity and refrain from workplace gossip,' he added.
About 200 UTS staff members attended the event, which was themed 'Uniting Cultures: Chinese New Year, Eid Mubarak and Gawai Dayak'.

First Infantry Division commander Maj-Gen Dato Khairul Anuar Abd Aziz said the event symbolised the Madani government's appreciation for the armed forces and aimed to strengthen patriotic spirit among ATM families and the local community. 'The Gawai Madani celebration is not only an expression of gratitude, but also aims to strengthen patriotic spirit among ATM families and the local community. Through such programmes, we are able to foster closer ties, instill love for the homeland, and nurture core values aligned with the Malaysia Madani aspirations. 'Additionally, this initiative provides an opportunity to honour and celebrate ATM families together with the local community in a spirit of harmony and togetherness. 'Today's strong turnout exemplifies the deep sense of solidarity between the Armed Forces and the people, founded on Madani values of unity, understanding, and social cohesion across Malaysia's diverse society,' he said when officiating at the event. The celebration, part of the 'Jelajah Wira Madani' national initiative, brought together some 300 personnel and was graced by Eastern Field Command commander Lt-Gen Dato Mohd Sofi Md Lepi. ‘Toxic, degrading': Tmn Hilltop Miri residents endure months of unbearable living conditions

MIRI (July 13): The sound of crumbling earth at 3am on Chinese New Year's Eve was the beginning of a nightmare for the three families at Jalan 3A of Taman Hilltop in Miri – one that continues to haunt them until this day. Forced to be living in stench-filled environment with no gas supply, these families are not only exposed to the risk of developing health issues, but the changing weather further erode the soil underneath this area, putting the remaining walls of the next neighbour to possibly collapse. Pauline Sim recalled being abruptly woken up to a huge rumbling sound, followed by voices of her neighbours shouting. 'The retaining walls on our backyards collapsed. Prior to this, it had been pouring for a month. My heart really sank because it occurred on the eve of the Chinese New Year. 'It should have been the most celebrated time, but we were forced to face this challenge,' she told thesundaypost . After the wall collapsed, a strong gas odour was detected. Police and firefighters were called to the scene immediately, as it was discovered that the gas pipes were damaged following the collapse. It was a moment of danger, said Sim. 'Had the authorities not intervened, things could take a turn to the worse, like a gas explosion.' Officials from Miri City Council (MCC) were also called to the scene to carry out investigation. The residents were told that the collapse of the retaining walls was triggered by ageing structure, exacerbated by strong water flow caused by the heavy rain. The MCC gave assurance that it would undertake the repair works, in view of the situation being regarded as a collateral damage from a natural disaster. Sim and others were told that the fast-flowing water might have been slowly eroding the soil underneath the walls, weakening the structure. The month-long downpour, also classified as natural disaster, was the key contributing factor to the collapse. Gas supply cut Due to the damaged gas pipelines, the gas company had cut off the supply on the afternoon of Jan 28 as an emergency measure, fearing that fireworks or firecrackers during the Chinese New Year festivities might trigger a gas explosion. The incident had adversely affected three houses, comprising 20 residents in total. These households, having been accustomed to getting natural gas supply, were forced to go without it for nearly two months, before they were able to obtain gas tanks. 'We couldn't buy gas cylinder during the New Year period and the situation persisted after that because the floods in Bintulu had disrupted the production. 'We had take-outs every day and settled for the cheapest meals, but each still cost us RM40 to RM50 because I have a big family. Covering three meals a day, the cost was overwhelming – exceeding my monthly budget,' said Sim, shaking her head in remembering those difficult weeks. Sim shows her backyard – or what is left of it after the collapse. The situation was compounded by a region-wide shortage. Miri, at the time, was facing shortage of cooking gas tanks, as Bintulu was affected by the floods. Sim said although they were able to get gas tanks later on, she was still anxious about when the repair works would begin. 'With no clear timeline for when everything will resume to normal, we have been left waiting up to this day.' Unbearable conditions When the backyard was 'gone', the septic tank that was supposed to be supported by the soil had tilted because of its weight, and the pipe got disconnected from the house. As a result, each time the toilet got flushed, all the human waste would gush out of the soil, exposed to air. That, and the stench that came with it, made the living environment unbearable, said a resident Ang Yick See. 'It was a living nightmare, which got worse every single day. 'Imagine waking up every morning to the smell of sewage right outside your kitchen window – it was not just unpleasant; it's toxic, degrading and it's slowly destroying our family's health and our will to continue living here,' she said. The septic tank, according to her, is now sitting at a dangerously precarious angle – half-dangling into what used to be the drain. 'I worry that if anything were to burst, it might cause a bigger health disaster.' Ang said the owner of the house that her family had been renting for more than five years, had been reaching out to various government agencies including Miri City Council (MCC), as well as the local elected representative, trying to get attention that would help expedite the repair works. 'We were told that because of disaster, the funding for the repairs should be from the SDMC (Sarawak Disaster Management Committee), to be channelled to the city council as implementing body,' she said. Sim added: 'During a meeting between us, residents and the city council, the council's engineer promised that they would come to look at the severity of the situation; to see whether they could do anything about the septic tank. The waiting game Following the septic tank incident, the homeowners had repeatedly reached out to the authorities, hoping to get concrete action and also the timeline for any repair works. However, they felt that all efforts had been hampered by bureaucratic delays and 'unfulfilled promises'. It is said that due to severity of the damage, the houses are listed by the council as the fourth priority to be repaired among all disaster-affected properties. Initially, in February, the homeowners sought attention from Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, submitting to him a letter appealing for assistance to expedite the repair works. They were then told that a letter, highlighting the matter of funding, had been sent to Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, the Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. The last time thesundaypost checked with the MCC, which was on June 30, the council engineer said that the funding had not been received yet. The affected families are now calling upon the authorities to resolve the issue without further delay. It is their hope that the authorities would immediately repair the retaining walls, the gas pipelines and the sewerage, to ensure the safety and hygiene of their residence and its surroundings. 'We are not asking for luxury. Festival serving as a unifying factor

The Gawai Dayak parade is now a feature of this celebration in Sarawak. I HAVE often been asked by a number of young people in the Iban community about the origin of the Gawai Dayak. Most of the time, I oblige them – relating as best I can by repeating what I have heard from verbal or read from written sources, or from my own memory. It is quite possible that there is more than one version. Today's column is based partly on information obtained during conversation, some 30 years ago, with the late Dato Sri Tra Zehnder, the first Iban woman to be appointed as a state legislator. Another source was Michael Buma, once a teacher at the Anglican Mission School in Quop. Tra expressed her inner thoughts to me thus: 'Maya Hari Raya kitai ngabang ngagai kaban kitai Melayu; maya Taun Baru China kitai ngabang ngagai kaban kitai China. Tang sida tu enda ngabang ngagai kitai, laban kitai Dayak nadai Ari Besai (We visit our Malay friends during the Hari Raya, and our Chinese friends during their New Year, but they do not visit us because we, the Dayaks, have no special day to celebrate during which the Malays and the Chinese can visit us in return).' Tra was referring to the situation in the context of the Dayaks who were residing and working in Kuching. Daughter of Sarawak Constabulary Sub-Insp Inting Jemat, she had been brought up in a cross- cultural setting in Kuching for most of her life that her world view was broad and pragmatic. In fact, for some time during the colonial period (1958-1960), the Dayak (settlers and/or residents of Kuching, mostly government servants and Christians), had been toying with the idea of another festivity that would be more traditional or cultural than religious and pious. This group, consisting of teachers and those whom we would call social activists, were more articulate and vocal in their views. Among them were Michael Buma, Ah Guan, Barbara Bay Mendu, Robert Jitam, Edward Jerah and Austin Jaga. Although Tra belonged to the community dominated by the police personnel and families, she managed to reach out to and maintain a good rapport with the ordinary members of the Dayak community in Kuching. She established a close contact with people like Malacca- trained nurse Barbara Bay (Mendu Bayang), Mrs Ang, Madam Tuyah and her daughter Susie Kitto. They formed the Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS), the women's wing of the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU), for the purpose of providing educational advice to Dayak women in Kuching. She also established a good relationship with Michael Buma and the political activists. However, these 'radicals' had a vision of their own as to how Dayaks of various groups could coalesce and constitute a force in society in Sarawak. Michael Buma, leading the group, moved one step further by proposing that the government of Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan (1963) should declare a day in each year as 'The Dayak Day'. While Tra endorsed Michael Buma's proposal, she had a problem with other members of the Council Negri who thought that she was being too political. Michael Buma, watching on the sidelines, made a bold move in defiance of the attitude of those legislators. He organised a tea party at his house in Siol Kandis, Kuching, and invited people of the same mind, 'Segulai Sejalai'. They were launching the celebration called the 'Dayak Day'. Yes, that day – June 1, 1964! I was not there. I was told by Daniel Ragam, who was present, that the atmosphere was politically electrified. Apparently, the Police Special Branch had sent a couple of boys to Michael Buma's house 'just for a drink' and, obviously, to keep an official eye on things. The significance of this Special Branch intrusion intrigued me as I was listening to Tra. Peter Ratcliffe, the director of Radio Sarawak, hinted to me that the government was going to declare June 1 as a public holiday to dilute the influence of the Dayak activists, using the radio to promote the concept of celebrating a successful harvest instead of something radical. The choice of the name 'Gawai Dayak' was deliberate, a strategy to pre-empt the influence of the activists. Kalong's government, fearing that the Dayak sentiment would develop into a political issue, used Radio Sarawak to promote the 'Harvest Festival' as the Gawai Dayak. That was it! The programme producers at Radio Sarawak even took the initiative to introduce a format for the celebration. For instance, on May 31, the eve of Gawai Dayak, each Dayak family should celebrate the occasion with a dinner at home – similar to the customary dinner among the Chinese on the eve of their New Year. A new festival was thus created for the Dayak community because the 'townies' wanted to have their own version of festival. The Christians among the townies were not in favour of anything pagan like, for instance, a 'miring' (traditional ritual to seek blessings). In the 1980s, the Gawai Dayak was organised as a state function. As a political device, it suits the politicians in power. They take advantage of the big gathering during which to be seen together with the 'common people' – 'Segulai Sejalai', you see! The 'Ngiling Tikai / Ngiling Bidai' (symbolic rolling-up of the mat, to mark the end of festivities) was not part of the Gawai as far as I could remember. However, it has become an accepted part of the proceedings by now.
