Himachal sets up panel after houses develop cracks due to railway tunnel work: Vaishnaw
New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday informed the Rajya Sabha that the 63-km Bhanupalli-Bilaspur-Beri new rail line project in Himachal Pradesh has been sanctioned on a cost-sharing basis with the state government and 80.31 hectares of land out of the total required 123.16 hectares of land has been acquired. In a written reply, Vaishnaw told the Upper House that the Himachal government constituted another committee in June 2025 on the request of locals after the first committee dealt with their complaints related to houses developing cracks due to tunnelling work for the Bhanupalli-Bilaspur-Beri new line project."The works on available land have been taken up. So far, an expenditure of Rs 5,251.81 crore has been incurred on this project. Rs 1,789.56 crore is outstanding with the Government of Himachal Pradesh. The progress of this project is affected due to non-fulfillment of commitments by the State Government of Himachal Pradesh," Vaishnaw said."Some of the inhabitants of the area near the tunnel No. 17 of the Bhanupali-Bilaspur-Beri rail project have raised the issue of cracks in their houses. The state administration had constituted a committee to examine the issue."According to the minister, the committee in its report has mentioned that some existing cracks in the houses have increased but the cause was not clear as no blasting was done in the execution of tunnelling. However, on the recommendation of the committee, the houses were repaired with the latest techniques to give relief to the affected persons.Again, in June 2025, at the request of local persons, another committee was constituted by the state government and which includes an independent engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology, National Institute of Technology and a geology expert from the state Geology Department also for further examination of the issue, the minister said.Replying to questions related to the redevelopment of stations, Vaishnaw said so far, four stations such as Baijnath Paprola, Amb Andaura, Palampur Himachal and Shimla have been identified for development under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in Himachal Pradesh. Prime Minister to flag off key metro links in Kolkata on August 22
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate three metro stretches, including the last phase of the much-awaited east-west corridor (Green Line) of the metro rail in Kolkata on August 22. The metro stretches to be flagged off include the Noapara to Jai Hind (airport) stretch in the Yellow Line; the Sealdah to Esplanade stretch in the Green Line; and the Beleghata to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay stretch in the Orange Line, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a letter to Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sukanta Majumdar. The Prime Minister's programme is scheduled to take place at the Jessore Road metro station of the Yellow Line, the letter further said. The inauguration programmes were 'a historic gift for West Bengal before Durga Puja', Mr. Majumdar said on Wednesday. The announcement assumes significance as it involves the inauguration of key metro links in the city and its suburbs, including the Yellow Line link to the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, and the much-awaited under-river Green Line linking the key business districts of Howrah, Kolkata, and Bidhannagar. Currently, the Green Line runs between two separate stretches from east to west — Salt Lake Sector V and Sealdah (9.4 km), and Esplanade to Howrah Maidan (4.8 km). However, the completion of the two kilometre-long metro connection between Sealdah and Esplanade had been pending due to soil subsidence and water leakage issues in Kolkata's Bowbazar area. Once the Sealdah and Esplanade stations are operationally connected, the Green Line will run a net distance of 16.55 km between Howrah Maidan and Sector V. It will cover 12 stations, six of which will be elevated, and the rest would be underground. Currently, the 18.13 km-long Yellow Line is under construction. The Prime Minister on August 22 will inaugurate its 7 km-long first phase between Noapara and Jai Hind (airport) stations, allowing flight-bound passengers from across the city to avail the metro to reach the airport. Meanwhile, the Orange Line, which is set to cover a total distance of 32 km between Kavi Subhash (New Garia) and Jai Hind (airport) stations, is partially operational, and partially under construction by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. The Prime Minister is set to inaugurate the second phase connection between Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby crossing) and Beleghata (metropolitan) stations of the Orange Line.

Not just citizens, my children too fight with me over traffic: DK Shivakumar
Bengaluru: It is not just ordinary citizens who are exasperated by Bengaluru's traffic mess, even DCM DK Shivakumar admitted he gets an earful about it at home. Speaking in the legislative council Thursday, Shivakumar said his children berate him almost every day over the city's crippling congestion and deteriorating road infrastructure. Participating in a debate on the proposed tunnel road project, BJP MLC CT Ravi said Bengaluru has over 1.2 crore registered vehicles, with citizens spending an average of 117 hours a year stuck in traffic. "Bengaluru is not as planned as New Delhi. The road dimensions have remained the same since city founder Kempegowda's time, but vehicle numbers have exploded. It can take six to seven hours to travel just 10-15km. My own kids complain it takes up to three hours to reach some parts of the city and fight with me. High court judges who commute to work from Hebbal have also been complaining that it takes 45 minutes to travel to work," he said. Shivakumar noted the city's population has doubled from 70 lakh to 1.4 crore, including 25 lakh tech professionals — nearly double the number in California's Silicon Valley. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Female Athletes Right Now Undo But road widening, he argued, is nearly impossible given property costs exceeding Rs 10,000 per sqft. Instead, he proposed largescale double-decker flyovers and elevated corridors. Citing a pilot flyover from Ragigudda to Silk Board executed by minister Ramalinga Reddy after a study visit to Pune, Shivakumar said PM Narendra Modi recently appreciated the concept and advised to expand it, even suggesting solar panel coverage. DK Shivakumar cites PM Modi's support to defend Bengaluru tunnel road project
Bengaluru: In a bid to stymie opposition BJP's criticism of the state govt's 'tunnel road' project, deputy chief minister on Thursday claimed to have earned the backing of none other than for the state govt's ambitious plan to ease the city's traffic gridlock. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking during a debate in the Legislative Council, Shivakumar claimed to have secured the PM's consent for the multi-crore rupee project, while reiterating that he was open to suggestions, debates, and discussions on the plan to decongest Bengaluru's roads. Shivakumar's explanation came in response to BJP MLC C T Ravi's reference to the project as "unscientific", even as he questioned its cost and compared it to similar infrastructure ventures across the country. Responding to it, Shivakumar recalled Modi's appreciation for the project during his recent visit to the city to inaugurate Namma Metro's Yellow Line. "Some MPs accused me of planning this project to loot money. I want to make it clear, I'm not approaching this as a business or financial venture. I'm ready to face any inquiry if there's a trace of corruption in this," the deputy CM said. He continued: "When the PM visited last week, I requested him not to make empty promises and handed over a representation on these [infra] projects. He readily asked me to go ahead and assured that he would look into it." Explaining the feasibility part, Shivakumar said toll collection will be inevitable. Point-Counterpoint On Cost Questioning the viability of the tunnel road's estimated cost, Ravi compared it with the other major urban infra projects in the country: 9-km Atal Tunnel (Rs 365 crore/km), the 29-km Mumbai Coastal Road (Rs 445 crore/km), and the 119-km Bengaluru-Mysuru access-controlled highway (Rs 71 crore/km). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In contrast, he claimed the 16-km Hebbal-Silk Board tunnel's cost is pegged at Rs 1,156 crore/km, while the 28-km KR Pura-Nayandahalli tunnel will cost Rs 893 crore/km. He also alleged that blacklisted firms were involved in preparing the detailed project report. Shivakumar, though, dismissed the comparison, claiming that compared to other major projects such as the Gaimukh and Orange Gate tunnels, which cost Rs 1,316 crore/km, the cost of building Bengaluru's tunnel road at Rs 770 crore/km "is significantly lower". BOX Govt to penalise firm for copying DPR content from Maha project Times News Network Bengaluru: The state govt on Thursday said it will penalise a private consultancy for allegedly copying portions of a Maharashtra infra project report and pasting the same into a draft detailed project report (DPR) for Bengaluru's proposed tunnel road. Admitting to "glaring errors" in the draft DPR — highlighted by BJP functionaries during a Legislative Council debate — deputy CM and Bengaluru in-charge minister D K Shivakumar confirmed that the firm would be penalised, though he did not specify the quantum of penalty. BJP MLC C T Ravi earlier accused Delhi-based Rodic Consultants, which had prepared the draft DPR, of lifting content from a similar project between Nashik and Malegaon in Maharashtra. TOI first reported the errors on Jan 8, 2025, citing citizen activists' findings. BBMP earlier disclosed it had fined the consultant Rs 5 lakh.
