Paddy Pimblett brutalises Michael Chandler at UFC 314 to defy doubters and reach upper echelons
Paddy Pimblett brutalised Michael Chandler at UFC 314 on Saturday, stopping the veteran in round three to move closer to a title shot.
Pimblett and Chandler squared off in the co-main event in Miami's Kaseya Center, with five rounds scheduled at lightweight. However, 'Paddy The Baddy' needed just two-and-a-half rounds to dismiss Chandler, forcing a TKO with a barrage of ground strikes.
While Chandler, 38, had his moments in round one, having taken down and controlled Pimblett, the latter was landing leg kicks at will. And the Briton built more momentum in round two, quickly recovering from a second takedown to get on top and threaten submissions.
Chandler survived a Kimura attempt and a rear naked choke late in the round, but the following frame would bring the end – and a third straight loss for the former three-time Bellator champion.
Pimblett, 30, hurt Chandler with a jumping knee before getting ahold of the American and slamming him to the mat, where Pimblett reached mount and rained down elbows, hammer fists and punches on an already bloody Chandler.
The referee stepped in to hand Pimblett the win, before the Liverpudlian told Joe Rogan: 'Lad, literally everything I have worked with my team, all the fight run-throughs we've done, has just happened here.
'This is how we win: we gameplan, we use our fight IQ, and we beat motherf*****s up. [I want] anyone in the top four, top five. I want that world title. Laugh all you want. What now? You gang of mushrooms.
'I want Dustin [Poirier], Justin [Gaethje], Charles [Oliveira] or the little posh boy Arman [Tsarukyan] – any of them four. I respect Dustin, Justin and Charles.
'Charles is the biggest legend out of them all, and he gets called the best submitting artist the UFC's ever seen. Well, I dispute that, I'm here.'
With Saturday's result, Pimblett extended his UFC record to 7-0, and he will surely enter the lightweight top 10 next week.
Meanwhile, Chandler's UFC record fell to 2-5, a disappointing development amid a phase of his career that saw him wait almost two years for a Conor McGregor fight – which was signed but never came.

Another key appointment for Gers was made on Friday when 39-year-old former Southampton boss Martin, who had a short loan spell as a player in Govan in 2018, was confirmed as manager. The appointment has not found universal favour among supporters but Stewart believes Martin fits the bill perfectly – albeit the former Scotland defender has to demonstrate that to his new bosses. Stewart, who started work in his role last December, said: 'Russell's appointment is the culmination of a series of steps we've been working on over the past few months since I joined Rangers. 'We started with the football review, which I spoke to the media about in January. This led to several insights and recommendations, including the need to modernise our operations and develop a clear footballing identity. 'Then the next step was to appoint a sporting director and Kevin, of course, was appointed in April and came into the building just this week. 'We also have been developing a clear football style and identity and that's work that's been going on behind the scenes. It's been led by Kevin and it's involved football people. 'We've now culminated in appointing Russell and in Russell we've got a head coach who aligns to the footballing style and identity that we've been developing. 'In addition to wanting a head coach who's going to excel in terms of the style that we're looking to play as a club, we also were looking for a head coach that's going to improve our culture, develop our squad and ultimately win matches. And Russell's been a standout candidate. 'This appointment is about building a winning team and a strong culture. 'Now, Russell's no stranger to our club, as you know, he's been a player here previously and we expect success and Russell knows that. We're really, really excited for his leadership and for him to get started.' Martin will be joined at Ibrox by assistant head coach Matt Gill and performance coach Rhys Owen. A new share issue at the club's general meeting on June 23 will raise £20million, the bulk of which will be going to the football department. Thelwell insisted that Martin will be involved in any new recruits. He said: 'When we talk about recruitment, clearly it's going to be a collaborative approach. 'I've never been in this role ever where I've signed a player for the first team that hasn't been supported by the head coach or the manager. So we'll talk a lot about how we want to play. 'We'll talk a lot about what profiles we think we need and what positions we think we need. 'And then between Russell and I, and the recruitment team, we'll sit down and identify players that we think can make us better very quickly. And then between us, we'll decide about what we do next. 'That's generally how I've worked and generally how we've discussed how it's going to work. And for me, that's probably been a good way of working so that we've got some clarity.'

Rangers supporters are unhappy with his performance in the Premier League, where he was sacked by Southampton after a horror start to the season, after bringing them up through the play-offs. There is the perception that Martin was too dogmatic in his possession-based style of play and paid the price in the English top flight. He is already under severe and unprecedented pressure to hit the ground running. There's plenty of work to be done to overhaul Rangers' squad which ended up trophyless last season, albeit reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Rangers confirmed the departures of Ianis Hagi, Leon Balogun and Tom Lawrence with their contracts set to expire. Loanees Vaclav Cerny, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Rafael Fernandes have also left the club while players like Robin Propper, Nedim Bajrami, Ben Davies, Kieran Dowall – the latter two who spent last season at loan at Birmingham – are expected to depart. Midfielder Lyall Cameron will arrive from Dundee but he will not be alone. Arguably, a new goalkeeper, right-back, left-back, two centre-backs, two wingers, a number 10 and a striker is required. Of course, much will depend on the style favoured by Martin and how much money is made available but the Light Blues will have a new look next season. Midfielder Nicolas Raskin is arguably the club's biggest asset following a terrific season during which he broke into the Belgium national side. The 24-year-old, who signed from Standard Liege in January 2023 for a reported fee of around £1.3million has two years left on his contract. Rangers fans remain disgruntled about players like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos who were allowed to run down their deals and leave for nothing. Enigmatic Cyriel Dessers has often been a frustrating figure since signing from Cremonese in 2023 but ended up top scorer in the Premiership last season with 18 goals while he netted 29 times for Rangers in total, taking his tally over two seasons to 51. Rangers fans appear split on whether the Nigeria international, contracted to 2027, should stay or go. But how much would it cost to replace him with a striker who guarantees the same goal return? Martin may just have walked in the door but he will be expected to win silverware this season with Celtic dominating Scottish football. Rangers fans watched their Old Firm rivals clinch their 13th league title in 14 seasons – albeit the Light Blues had a better head-to-head in league games – and only a Scottish Cup final defeat to Aberdeen on penalties denied the Hoops a sixth domestic treble in nine years. The former light-heavyweight champion is hoping to return to action later this year despite Magomed Ankalaev's claims that the Brazilian is 'retired' Alex Pereira has clapped back at Magomed Ankalaev, expressing his desire to make a comeback to the octagon later this year. The Brazilian was on the receiving end of a surprise loss to Ankalaev at UFC 313 earlier this year. The build-up to their light-heavyweight bout was marred by a war of words, with tensions running high and nearly boiling over before they even stepped into the cage. Since clinching the 205lb title, Ankalaev is desperate to stay active inside the cage and has continued to carry on his rivalry with 'Poatan'. The Russian accused the Pereira camp of stalling negotiations and believes that the former light-heavyweight king is 'retired.' Despite the post-UFC 313 drama, Pereira is keen to even the score and win back the gold strap. In a recent interview with UFC Brazil, the 37-year-old set the record straight regarding the status of his second bout with Ankalaev. "We'll definitely be talking about my next fight soon," he said. "I don't have a specific date yet, but we already have an idea. I took this time off to rest, because I worked hard in 2024. I think my body got tired, I had some injuries, so I decided to take it easy, more on the recovery side, and now I'm coming back. To come back [the right way]: firm and strong, to go after my belt again." Ankalaev recently stated that he had agreed to fight Pereira in June, July and August, following reports that both fighters had consented to a rematch. Despite his insistence that the Brazilian is 'done,' it appears likely that the Russian's first title defence will be an immediate sequel against the knockout artist. The Russian's remarks came just weeks after the Brazilian fan-favourite claimed he was 'hacked' on X, following a post suggesting he had threatened UFC CEO Dana White with retirement. "I don't even know what's going on. I have a great relationship with the UFC," said Pereira. Daniel Cormier, who shares a good relationship with 'Poatan', didn't buy his response. "Pereira is a liar," Cormier declared. "Pereira did not get hacked yesterday. "Pereira might have tweeted something and then somebody called him and was like, 'Yo, calm down. Let's chill.' I don't believe the hack thing, mate. It's too convenient. It was very unusual. It was too specific. He didn't use profanity. It kind of sounded like Pereira." Pereira had posted: "I always answered the UFC's calls. But if they want to play with me, we can do that. I've never spoken poorly of the UFC but with what I've just heard I'm disheartened. I've already had thoughts of not fighting anymore, and after what was just relayed to me this may be the start." 'Poatan,' however, is now back in training and appears to be preparing for his return to the cage. The rematch was initially suggested to take place at UFC 318 in Chicago, before the announcement of the Dricus du Plessis vs Khamzat Chimaev headliner by the promotion. Now, the earliest possible date for this fight could be September at UFC 319.
