Arlington Million trip with Cairo has Haynes in dreamland
Cairo – who was behind only then-stablemate Paddington in the Irish 2,000 Guineas when trained by Aidan O'Brien – was best of the rest at 100-1 as Docklands narrowly defeated Rosallion in the Queen Anne Stakes at the Royal meeting.
Having already faced high-calibre fields this season, Cairo will add to that list by taking on 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan in Virginia.
'Going into Royal Ascot, I did feel the horse was as well as we've ever had him,' Haynes told her yard sponsor, Coral.
'He was absolutely flying at home so I had high hopes he would run a big race, but even so, to finish third in a field of that quality did surprise me, in the best possible way obviously!
'I'd always thought that coming to America would suit him, and having discussed it with the owner, going into Ascot we very much had it in our minds.
'He still needed to run a big race at Ascot to make the trip viable, but of course he produced that big run.
'The team from Colonial Downs were at the track that day and chatting to them after the Queen Anne really did make up our mind to come here.'
Haynes has now set her sights on rewarding her stable star, who arrived in New York last week before an eight-hour journey to Virginia, with a couple of lucrative races in the United States before returning home.
'He's an old pro now when it comes to travelling, so he's taken it all in his stride and acclimatised well,' Haynes added.
'The temperature is cooler than it was here last week apparently so while it's still warm, it's more comfortable for him now.
'He had a couple of canters on the dirt when he first got here and his latest piece of work has been on the turf, under his big-race pilot Ben Curtis.
'Ben actually contacted us when he saw we were running the horse over here and I think he will be a really good fit for the horse.
'He's obviously got plenty of experience riding European horses, but he's been in America long enough now to have the local knowledge as well, which I think could be really important in a race like this.
'We're under no illusions about the task we face though, and realistically, finishing in the first three would be a tremendous achievement.
'The plan after this weekend is to send him down to Keeneland to be based with Ed Vaughan and aim him at a richly-endowed race at Kentucky Downs.
'It is just so exciting to be involved in a big international race like this, it really is what we have worked so hard to achieve.'

Security video shows Olympic gold medallist attacking boyfriend at airport
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Footage of Olympic gold medallist Sha'Carri Richardson attacking her boyfriend at an airport in the United States has been released. A security video from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport shows Richardson angrily confronting her partner, the American sprinter Christian Coleman, and shoving him into a wall. Coleman was seen attempting to diffuse the situation by walking away from Richardson throughout the video, however, he was pushed and shoved on multiple occasions. Richardson, who won a silver mdeal in the 100m and gold in the 4x100m relay at the Olympics in Paris last year, was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault. According to the Port of Seattle Police, Richardson told officers that the argument began because Coleman had taken her headphones. 'Richardson advised she did not assault him in any way and the dispute was only a verbal argument,' police documents said. Coleman, however, has since insisted that Richardson should not have been arrested and described them both as 'two dominant personalities'. 'For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all round,' said Coleman, who declined to press charges against Richardson. 'I don't feel like she should have been arrested. 'I mean people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that. She has things that she needs to work on for herself of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. 'But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, and mercy and love. Lescott hails the boom in football trading cards
Joleon Lescott believes the boom of interest in football trading cards helps fans recognise his talents even more than when he was playing. The former Manchester City star was in attendance for the launch of the Topps Premier League 2026 collection at the Fanatics flagship London store on Regent Street on Thursday. Lescott was amazed by the reaction of hundreds of fans who flooded in to get their hands on the new collection and enjoyed the celebrations alongside legends like Alan Shearer and Steven Gerrard. 'It's crazy because now it helps a younger generation recognise me for my playing days and probably even more than when I was playing. It's a nice feeling,' he said. 'I'm impressed by the enthusiasm of it and learning the difference in the meaning of them. 'Obviously, you're aware that cards are rarer than others but there's more detail than that. 'When I was younger, there were five cards, one was shiny and you knew you would get a badge in there, but now there are beast mode cards and all that stuff.' The all-new Topps Premier League 2026 collection is a stand-alone range outside of Match Attax and boasts an extensive parallel programme with 15 colour variations across unnumbered and numbered parallels. It features players from all 20 Premier League clubs featured in the collection as well as legends and more autographs than ever before. The launch evoked nostalgia for Lescott who remembered collecting himself as a child and also funding the passion of his youngest son. 'My first collection was Gladiators and then I went into this world [of football]. But my youngest son is an avid collector of cards,' he recalled. 'He used to use them as his version of Subbuteo. He played cards, so he used to collect the cards and put them in teams and would entertain himself, so I'm aware of this world.' It was fitting, too, that Gerrard was in attendance alongside Premier League stars like Theo Walcott, Jermaine Defoe and current Chelsea star Tosin Adarabioyo as Lescott recalls a particularly impressive card from his son's collection. 'He was collecting them before it was as big as it is now. I told him the industry of collectibles, especially in American sports, were massive and it was transitioning over to football,' he said. 'I told him to start collecting some of the rarer players but he just wanted to play with them, he wasn't thinking about collecting them. 'We were lucky enough to be at a Steven Gerrard event years ago and he got honoured with a card and it was a Premier League legends card. So he's got that one, but that's still in the case he's still protecting that one. 'But overall, he hasn't got any ones that would be worth using because they're all frayed at the ends.' Marking the launch of the Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection were football icons Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard, and Rio Ferdinand, joined by Jermaine Defoe, Joleon Lescott, Theo Walcott and Tosin Adarabioyo, alongside Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin in a star-studded celebration.
