
The U.S. touts its digital dominance—but it lags behind many other countries
The United States has a well-developed digital economy, encompassing about 18% of its total economy, according to several sources and research from the International Data Center Authority (IDCA). This is above the world average of 15%. But the U.S. can always do better.
The IDCA defines a digital economy as representing all economic activities that are reliant on or significantly enhanced by the use of digital technologies, including digital infrastructure, AI, and digital services. Having worked with hundreds of public data sources and its own surveys to create its Digital Readiness of Nations Index, the IDCA's Global Digital Economy Report (2025) is a unique deep dive into the current development of the world's digital economies.
Digging Into Digital Economy Data
This Index places the digital economies of the nations of the world into four categories: Phase III (Advanced), Phase II (Significantly Developed), Phase I (Early-Stage), and a Pre-Phase. It examines all the data sets across four broad categories—economy, environment, social, and governance—to rank the nations on a scale of 0 to 100. The Index considers relative progress, that is, how well each nation has developed its digital economy with respect to its economic resources and social development.
Doing this shows only six nations that are currently in an advanced, Phase III stage of development. Surprisingly enough, despite its economic size and potential, the United States is not one of them. In fact, none of the world's G7 or even G20 nations have reached this advanced status, either. Today, Phase III has been accomplished only by the small nations of Scandinavia, Finland, and Switzerland. An aggressive commitment to the use of sustainable energy, relative income parity, and strong government institutions are all characteristics of this group.
The U.S. Is Not the Exemplar
So far the largest nations of the world, including the United States, have not been able to match these smaller countries. The U.S. and its G7 cohort are instead ensconced among a group of a few dozen nations within the Phase II group, all of which show significantly developed digital economies. Digging into the data finds that within this group, the U.S. lags Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea and the U.K. in its commitment to sustainable energy, income parity, and strong government institutions.
Expanding the focus to the G20 group of nations finds more diffuse progress. Because membership in the G20 club is simply based on the size of a nation's overall economy, not its relative development or wealth, there are several still-developing nations in the G20, including Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and South Africa. There are also the troubled economies of Argentina and Russia in this group. All the nations cited here are in Phase I, still at an early stage of their digital economies. It must be noted, though, that Brazil, China, and to some degree India, continue to make considerable progress toward fully developed economies and a higher stage of digital economy development.
So despite leading the world in the size of its overall economy and digital economy, having reached its status on the back of compounded historic economic dominance, the U.S. is not truly an exemplar for the world. What can the nation do to improve its standing?
Create a national strategy and policies
American business and government leaders pride themselves on how the U.S. has long been the world's capital of innovation and IT development without the 'help' of national strategies or focused policies. But ad hoc development on the scale envisioned for the AI age will end up being more chaotic—and less effective—than necessary. The U.S. does not need to reach EU levels of regulation and enforcement, but its federal government can do more to meet today's 'Sputnik challenge,' or watch China and the EU run away with leadership of AI and digital economies.
Build more sustainable energy
Renewable energy delivers 20.3% of the electricity consumed within the United States, below the world average of 30%. Nuclear energy adds another 18.2% to the U.S. grid, which technically brings it close to the world average for sustainable energy. But this is not good enough. The U.S. remains the world's second-largest producer of greenhouse gases and lacks a true commitment to sustainable energy progress.
Focus on workforce development
Even though the U.S. has the world's largest IT-skilled workforce, it needs to upskill and retrain millions of people to prepare for the skills demanded by the continued growth of AI development and AI-driven data centers. The IDCA's own report recently found a workforce deficit of over 100 million IT workers globally. There are already several hundred billion dollars' worth of large, advanced AI data centers being planned in the U.S., but without a workforce adequate to the challenge, these new facilities will be underused and mismanaged. Tapping into a holistic and dynamic set of professional training programs is key here.
Ensure smart buildouts
More than 40% of the world's data centers are located in the U.S., and projections show that this dominance will continue. But it will be a grave mistake to build data centers along the same old, general purpose, inefficient lines. The new data centers, whether a small 10-megawatt building or sprawling gigawatt-sized campus, must all be built to suit, with the most efficient energy management and computational efficiency available. Developers must not only be smart about building them but also focus on 'smart' environments that support more robotic manufacturing, autonomous transportation, sensor-driven energy management, and AI-driven services to businesses and consumers.
A high bar
In summary, it would be unfair to say that the U.S. significantly lags the G7, or any other group of nations, in the development of its digital economy. The situation is not dire, and the U.S. has not already given away the game. In fact, we see an influx of announcements for data centers and AI investments committing to the U.S. economy.
However, due to its sheer size and potential, what might be great for some countries is considered poorly accomplished by our benchmark. The world's largest economic power needs to judge itself solely by the standards of what it can accomplish, comparisons be damned. U.S. government and business leaders must work much harder to deliver on the nation's potential.

Smithsonian Museum exhibit coming to Lee this summer
LEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The town of Lee has been selected to host the Smithsonian Institution's Museum on Main Street traveling exhibition, opening this Saturday. Non-profit organization Mass Humanities selected Lee as the exhibit's host site last summer. This traveling exhibition, 'Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,' details the history of the U.S. government over the past nearly 250 years, examining how each generation has contributed to forming 'a more perfect union' in the country. 'Lee, Massachusetts, with its rich historical roots and vibrant community spirit, stands as an ideal location to host an exhibit on the history of democracy,' said Town Administrator Chris Brittain. 'Lee's charming downtown, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its deep connection to American heritage make it a perfect backdrop for exploring the evolution of democratic ideals.' The exhibit opens on Saturday, June 7, at the Lee Premium Outlets and will be available for viewing until July 18. A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Lee is among six towns in Massachusetts to display 'Voices and Votes' across six weeks, alongside Buckland, Ashby, Douglas, Holbrook, and East Sandwich. The traveling exhibition is based on 'American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith,' which is currently on display at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Free community events will also be hosted in Lee for residents to consider how the town's history is connected to democracy, freedom for citizens, and government participation. More than half of workers say their company lacks an LGBTQ+ resource group

About 57% of workers say their company doesn't have an LGBTQ+ employee resource group or equivalent support group, according to a new poll by Monster. 'Organizations can help foster an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ employees through resources, visibility, and open dialogue,' Monster said. In a May 2025 survey of 1,300 U.S. workers, 17% said they feel more comfortable discussing gender identity or sexual orientation, as compared to last year, while 42% feel less comfortable. Half of workers said their company's policies regarding protections for gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation have remained the same since the beginning of the current administration. Among workers who identify as LGBTQ+, 14% said they're open about their sexual orientation and gender identity with colleagues, compared to 45% of straight or cisgender employees. A quarter of workers said it's very important for workplaces to foster open discussion about LGBTQ+ identities and expression. Nearly half of workers, however, said they believe fostering open discussions about LGBTQ+ identities or expression is 'completely irrelevant' in the workplace. To increase LGBTQ+ comfort and belonging at work, Monster said companies can expand and communicate policy protections; only 2% of workers saying their company's policies regarding LGBTQ+ protections have expanded since the beginning of the current administration. During Pride month, HR professionals should consider several steps to promote belonging while mitigating legal risks, management-side law firms wrote in recent weeks. Although cultural observances may not be a target for federal enforcement actions, this year may feel 'thornier' to navigate, Ogletree Deakins attorneys said in an analysis, noting that planning ahead and leading with inclusion can help. Despite federal efforts to end private-sector diversity, equity and inclusion programs, most employers intend to maintain their initiatives with few or no changes, according to an employer survey by law firm Littler Mendelson. At the same time, a growing number of employers reported concerns about the potential for DEI-related litigation. On the employee side, LGBTQ+ workers are reporting more discrimination and less happiness at work, according to a WorkL report. TIMELINE: Inside the evolving relationship between Trump and Musk from first term to this week's fallout
The fallout between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump is an evolving situation marked by a public blowup on Thursday, but their relationship ties back to Trump's first term and even earlier. A November 2016 CNBC interview with the Tesla CEO, who's now the richest man in the world, took a critical tone of the now president just days before he was elected president in an upset that signified the strength of the populist movement. "Honestly, I think Hillary's economic policies and her environmental policies particularly are the right ones, you know, but yeah. Also, I don't think this is the finest moment in our democracy at all," Musk said. "Well, I feel a bit stronger that probably he's not the right guy. He just doesn't seem to have the sort of character that reflects well on the United States," he later added in the interview. During Trump's first term, Musk was part of some of his economic advisory councils, which often includes CEOs, but ultimately left his post because he disagreed with the president's move to exit the Paris Climate Accords. "Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world," Musk posted at the time. The two continued to have an on-and-off relationship, but there were some positive signs in May 2020. "Elon Musk, congratulations. Congratulations, Elon. Thanks, Elon. For Elon and 8,000 SpaceX employees, today is the fulfillment of a dream almost two decades in the making," Trump said at the Kennedy Space Center in May 2020. And at the SpaceX Demo-2 launch, Trump said he and Musk communicate regularly. "Well, I won't get into it. But, yeah — but I speak to him all the time. Great guy. He's one of our great brains. We like great brains. And Elon has done a fantastic job," he said. Fast forward to 2022, when Musk purchased Twitter and renamed it X, and brought back Trump's account that November, after it was suspended after the events of Jan. 6, 2021. In 2022, Musk also announced that he would vote Republican, but indicated he would back Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis if he opted to seek the nomination. DeSantis launched his campaign on X in a "space," a virtual public event forum, with Musk, who also reportedly significantly financially backed the Florida governor, according to The Wall Street Journal. However, a major turning point was in July 2024, after the assassination attempt of Trump at a rally in Butler, Penn. "I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery," Musk posted. Musk then campaigned for the president, including a famous moment when he was jumping on stage at his comeback rally in Butler. "I want to say what an honor it is to be here and, you know, the true test of someone's character is how they behave under fire, right?" Musk said at the rally. "And we had one president who couldn't climb a flight of stairs and another who was fist pumping after getting shot." "This is no ordinary election," the tech CEO continued. "The other side wants to take away your freedom of speech." "Just be a pest to everyone," he added. "You know, people on the street everywhere: Vote, vote, vote!" The tech billionaire spent roughly $300 million through America PAC to boost swing state voter efforts, including Pennsylvania. By the time the presidential election rolled around, Trump and Musk appeared to be close friends as the Tesla CEO was with Trump in Mar-a-Lago on election night. Over the next few days, Musk remained in Florida and was reportedly advising Trump on appointments and policy as the transition to a new administration kicked off. A week later, shortly before Musk and the new president appeared at a SpaceX launch together in Texas, Trump announced that Musk and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy would be heading up the Department of Government Efficiency in an effort to rid the government of waste, fraud, and abuse. Trump described the pair as "two wonderful Americans' and although Ramaswamy left that post in January and is now running for governor in Ohio, Musk stayed on and quickly became the face of an agency that made him the main target of attacks from Democrats pushing back on spending cuts that they argued were too drastic. Protests erupted nationwide against Musk and DOGE including violent outbursts at his Tesla dealerships that tanked the company's stock and were labeled as acts of "domestic terrorism" by the Justice Department. During the first few months of the year, Musk and Trump were spotted together at several viral events including a UFC fight, an Oval Office meeting where Musk's son "Little X" stole the show, and a cabinet meeting in late February where Musk was the main focus. In March, Trump hosted Elon at a Tesla showcase in front of the White House amid a dip in Tesla stock where the president told reporters he was purchasing a Tesla while touting the company. As Musk's time at DOGE began to wind down, his employee classification allowed him to serve for 130 days, the newly formed agency had become the poster child of anti-Trump sentiment from Democrats who consistently attacked the $175 billion in spending cuts that DOGE estimated it delivered. Signs of fracture in the relationship began showing in late May when Musk took a public shot at Trump's "big beautiful bill" as it made its way through Congress. "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing," Musk said. Two days later, Musk announced his official departure from DOGE. "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending," Musk said, adding that the effects of DOGE "will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government." DOGE, which fell short of Musk's initial goal of slashing $1 trillion in spending which Musk said he still remains optimistic will happen in the future, will continue its work without Musk, who said, "I look forward to continuing to be a friend and adviser to the president." That optimistic tone shifted drastically on June 3 when Musk took to X, the platform he owns, and blasted the budget reconciliation bill calling it "a disgusting abomination" and criticizing the Republicans who voted for it. "KILL THE BILL," Musk said the next day. A day after that, on Thursday, the feud hit a fever pitch. While speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said that he was "very disappointed" by Musk's vocal criticisms of the bill. The president claimed that Musk knew what was in the bill and "had no problem" with it until the EV incentives had to be cut. On X, Musk called that assessment "false." Trump turned to social media to criticize Musk, who he appointed to find ways to cut $2 trillion after forming the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). "Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!" Trump said in one post. In another post, Trump said, "I don't mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago. This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress. It's a Record Cut in Expenses, $1.6 Trillion Dollars, and the Biggest Tax Cut ever given." "If this Bill doesn't pass, there will be a 68% tax increase, and things far worse than that. I didn't create this mess, I'm just here to FIX IT. This puts our Country on a Path of Greatness. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" At one point, Musk referenced late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein in relation to Trump as part of the larger tirade in a comment that several Republicans told Fox News Digital went "too far." Other posts from Musk included a claim that Trump would not have won the election without his help while accusing Trump of "ingratitude." In another post, Musk suggested that Trump should be impeached and replaced by Vice President Vance. It is unclear if a resolution to the feud is coming in the next few days. Fox News Digital reported on Friday morning that Musk wants to speak to Trump and that White House aides could possibly broker a meeting. Trump told Fox News on Friday that he isn't interested in talking to Musk, adding that "Elon's totally lost it." Trump also said to Fox News' Bret Baier that he isn't worried about Musk's suggestion to form a new political party, citing favorable polls and strong support from Republicans on Capitol Hill.
