Daniel Leonard De Lange was a server, and Kyle Lucia Wu was working coat check at L'Artusi, an Italian restaurant in Manhattan's West Village, when they met in November 2013. 'I immediately had a crush on her,' Mr. De Lange said. 'She was very calm and composed. There was something so intriguing about her.'
The co-workers only spoke briefly, though, and Ms. Wu's role was seasonal. When she returned in 2016 for another winter, Mr. De Lange remembered her and was thrilled to see her again; he was even happier when she showed a flicker of interest in seeing him outside of work, when she mentioned wanting to invite him to a Christmas party that she was hosting with her roommates.
Mr. De Lange promptly asked if she wanted to get a drink that night at Buvette, a nearby restaurant that at the time served food until 2 a.m. 'I never thought I had a chance. I really thought she was just out of my league,' he said.
That night, the pair shared their first kiss. It was the first of many 'innocently romantic' meetings at Buvette, where — after loitering blocks away to keep their romance a secret from co-workers — they would talk over steak tartare and glasses of red wine.
The restaurant gigs were temporary for Ms. Wu, 36. When she first started dating Mr. De Lange, she had just finished the first draft of her novel 'Win Me Something.' It was published in 2021 to glowing reviews and was named a best book of the year by NPR.
Ms. Wu is also an author of 'An Asian American A to Z: A Children's Guide to Our History,' as well as a visiting assistant professor at the Pratt Institute and a lecturer at the New School. After growing up in Glen Rock, N.J., she received a bachelor's degree in psychology from N.Y.U. and a master's of fine arts in creative writing from the New School.

Amanda Knox, Monica Lewinsky reclaim the red carpet together

Amanda Knox and Monica Lewinsky are reclaiming their stories on the red carpet. The "Waiting to Be Heard" author and the anti-bullying activist posed together on the red carpet Aug. 19 while promoting their new eight-part Hulu series "The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox" (now streaming). For the show's New York City premiere, Knox wore a long, lacy Giambattista Valli Paris dress paired with pink Aquazzura heels, while Lewinsky stunned in a gold dress and pumps. It's been nearly two decades since Knox, then a 20-year-old student at the University of Washington, traveled 5,600 miles to study abroad in Perugia, Italy, about two hours north of Rome. Knox moved into an apartment, which she'd share with Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old British student. The two had become friends, but police arrested Knox and charged her with murdering Kercher. The new Hulu show follows Knox's nightmare journey, spending nearly four years in an Italian prison before being acquitted in 2011. She'd be found guilty (again) in 2014 and finally exonerated in 2015. Lewinsky, too, has faced the scrutiny of mainstream media's sometimes harsh light. The media painted the former White House intern, who had an affair with President Bill Clinton in the 1990s while he was in office, as a "little tart" (The Wall Street Journal) and "a ditsy, predatory White House intern" (The New York Times). Amanda Knox: 'Twisted Tale' asks, 'in the wake of trauma, how do you rebuild your life?' Monica Lewinsky produced 'Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' on Hulu Over the past decade, though, Lewinsky reclaimed the affair's public fallout as a contributing writer to Vanity Fair with a viral 2015 TED talk about public shaming. In more recent years, Lewinsky – who is credited as an executive producer on "Twisted Tale" – has rebounded as a rising producer in Hollywood. Knox said that Lewinsky "held my hand through this experience because she's been a trailblazer in this regard of a woman who had her worst experience used to bury her and turn her into a punchline," adding that she came "back and reclaimed her sense of self and her purpose in life and didn't allow all of these external forces to diminish her." She first stepped into the industry in September 2021 as a producer on Ryan Murphy's "Impeachment: American Crime Story," partly inspired by events in her own life. That fall, she executive-produced the HBO documentary "15 Minutes of Shame." "From my own experience, the first step was surviving," Lewinsky told USA TODAY. "Holding on to the hope that things can change. It won't be as bad as it is in the eye of the storm forever." Knox told USA TODAY that Lewinsky's reclamation made her believe that "there was perhaps a path forward for me in this world." So Knox asked to meet, and the pair later became friends. When Lewinsky learned four years later that Knox wanted to adapt her 2013 memoir, she reached out. The rest is history (or a Hulu series out now).

Amanda Knox had ‘chills' watching Hulu series on her life

Amanda Knox has reacted to the actress who plays her in the new Hulu limited series 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.' Knox lauded Grace Van Patten for the portrayal, telling People that her performance gave her 'chills,' and Van Patten has the 'ability to just take on the whimsy but the gravitas of this role.' 'I felt like I could finally grieve the young person that I was,' an emotional Knox told the magazine at the Aug. 19 premiere screening at the New York Historical Society in New York City. 'Someone recently said that what happened is someone stole my sparkle. They didn't just steal my freedom; they stole my sparkle.' She added, 'And seeing her bring it back again — I'm just so grateful to her, that she's honored that for me.' 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' The new series tells the true story of Knox, who was convicted of murder twice in relation to the death of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, while studying abroad in Italy in 2007. Knox spent four years in an Italian jail before she was exonerated in 2015 by Italy's highest court. The eight-part series, which former White House aide Monica Lewinsky serves as a producer, chronicles the wrongful conviction and how the ordeal has impacted her family, Kercher's family and Knox's boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, who was also convicted and then acquitted for Kercher's death, according to NPR. Meredith Kercher's family reacts to show Kercher's sister, Stephanie, chose to remember her 'for her own fight for life,' she told The Guardian in November 2024, when the series began filming in Italy. Stephanie Kercher told The Guardian her family found it 'difficult to understand' the purpose of the show. 'We will forever feel this indescribable void, but we live by Meredith's standards with dignity,' she said at the time. In March, Knox appeared on NewsNation's 'Banfield' to promote her book ' Free: My Search for Meaning ' and revealed details about her time in prison, which she said was 'dehumanizing' and rife with sexual harassment. 'I was also being highly sexualized in the media as this whore who would go with anybody. I think some male guards got the idea that if they could just find themselves alone in a room with me, they could take advantage of that,' Knox told Ashleigh Banfield at the time. On Van Patten's performance, Knox told People, 'Everyone I know who has seen this has just been like, 'How did she do that? How?'' She added, 'She is incredible, and I'm so grateful to her because I feel like that is something that I've struggled with for so long, is how much people have rendered me two-dimensional. And she finally honors that young person that I was and the person I am today.' Critics have had mixed reactions to the show, with Vox saying that the character portrayals are 'uneven and unsatisfying.' The outlet added that the show's attempts to highlight Kercher are 'shallow' since she and Knox only knew one another for a few weeks before her murder. The Hulu series premiered Wednesday, Aug. 20.
