Forest dept & villagers build fence to keep elephants out

Time of India22-07-2025
Kozhikode: At a time when forest department and residents of many forest fringe villages across the state are at odds, department officers and villagers at Neikkuppa under south Wayanad forest division joined hands to build a 4.5km hanging fence to stop wild elephants from entering human habitats.
Authorities proposed the participatory fencing initiative in an area that had seen severe elephant intrusions in recent months. They acted after realizing that the crash guard fencing project, already sanctioned by the state govt, would take months to complete. Work on a permanent fence was also halted due to the monsoon.
South Wayanad divisional forest officer Ajith K Raman said that under the participatory initiative, forest department provided the fencing materials, battery and energizing unit while residents carried out the work by contributing labour.
As there was no labour cost, the department completed the fencing with just the material cost of Rs 50,000.
In the first phase, a 1.5km temporary fence was built from Kakkodan block to Manalvayal. Encouraged by its success, the project was extended in the second phase with another 1km of fencing from Manalvayal to Neikkuppa. Now, the third phase — a 2km stretch connecting Neikkuppa to Pathramoola — has also been completed.

Residents of Manalvayal, Pathramoola, Chenchadi, Changalamoola, Neikkuppa and Kakkodan Block are expected to benefit from the fencing. Forest department and the local community will jointly maintain the temporary structure.
Farmers and residents from Kakkodan Block, Neikkuppa and Pathramoola — areas badly affected by wildlife intrusion — took the lead in completing the fencing work with support from Neikkuppa Forest Protection Committee.
Villages along this forest border have faced regular attacks by wild elephants, leading to the destruction of crops, vehicles and buildings. Over 40 farmers and residents took part in the effort. They were joined by Chedalath range officer MK Rajeev Kumar, deputy range officer A Nijeesh, staff from the Pulpally station and forest watchers.

Copious Cauvery enlivens Aadi Perukku celebrations

Trichy/Madurai: Thousands of people from various parts of the state thronged the banks of Cauvery and Kollidam rivers passing through Trichy to celebrate Aadi Perukku on Sunday. With water being discharged into the river at more than 15,700 cusecs, police and fire safety department personnel ensured safe conduct of the festival by restricting the devotees to use four designated bathing ghats. In Madurai, large-scale palm seed planting, river heritage events, and community-led afforestation drives marked the celebrations. Unlike previous years, as a substantial quantity of water is being discharged into the Cauvery from Mukkombu regulator, locals and visitors from nearby districts assembled at Amma Mandapam ghats in Srirangam to offer prayers. Newly wed couples accompanied by family members performed rituals on the river bank with prayers for togetherness in their married life. Flower garlands used in their wedding were floated into the river. As Aadi Perukku is a traditional thanksgiving day, prayers were performed to thank the Cauvery for rejuvenating lives in the agrarian hamlets, marking the commencement of fresh crop cycle. The festival is traditionally celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi (July-Aug). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Animal Photos To Cheer Up Anyone Undo Trichy corporation had provided flood lights and temporary toilets near the bathing ghats as people arrived since 4am. As part of 'Aadipattam Thedi Vidhai,' the climate wing of Young Indians (Yi) planted 2,025 palm seeds across five locations in Thirumangalam municipality in Madurai. Vaigai Nathi Makkal Iyakkam organised awareness events highlighting the ecological and cultural significance of the river. In an event combining housing support and ecological action, 100 native tree saplings were planted near Thirunagar in Sakayam Nagar, Vedarpuliyankulam panchayat. The initiative coincided with the housewarming ceremony for 33 families from the Kattu Nayakkar indigenous community, who got new homes under Tamil Nadu govt's Tribal Welfare Housing Scheme. The sapling planting event was coordinated by Oorvanam Nature Foundation and Madurai Nature and Cultural Foundation. Pilgrims flock to Kashi for last Shrawan Mon

1 2 3 4 Varanasi: Amidst raging flood, the vicinity of Kashi Vishwanath Dham was crowded on Sunday with saffron-clad kanwariyas and pilgrims who arrived on the eve of last Monday of Shrawan. As Ganga water reached the road at the bathing ghats like Dashaswamedh, police increased vigilance while preparations for crowd regulation were made accordingly. Major preparations were finalised in Kashi Vishwanath temple, where Kashi's presiding deity was adorned with a grand rudraksh decoration, enabling devotees to offer 'jalabhishek' and a rare glimpse of the deity. Kashi Vishwanath CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra said the special 'rudraksha shringar' aarti would be performed in the evening of the fourth Monday with grandeur. Decoration would enhance the beauty of Kashi Vishwanath Dham to reflect various manifestations of the deity. On the past three Mondays of the auspicious month, the devotees witnessed adornment of the movable idol of Gauri Shankar and Ardhanarishwar. On Shrawan's concluding day on Aug 9, visitors will get a glimpse of the traditional 'jhula shringar' (swing adornment). Earlier, roads leading to Kashi Vishwanath Dham started flooding with devotees and a large number of them began occupying the barricaded areas installed for queuing to enter the shrine area. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Are Ditching Finger Pricks with This Breakthrough Monitor Zakdavi Undo In view of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's directivesduring his multiple visits to the temple throughout Shrawan, temple authorities and district administration ensured comprehensive arrangements for smooth conduct of festivities. Flat owners to seek govt intervention in setting up sewage treatment plants

Kochi: With several apartment complexes in Kochi failing to install sewage treatment plants (STPs) within deadline set by pollution control board (PCB), Consortium of Flats and Villas Owners Association, Kerala, (COFVOAK) has decided to seek the state govt's immediate intervention. They aim to ensure that steps are taken to utilise the existing STPs in the city to their full capacity. At present, only 10% of the capacity of these plants is being used. Recently, the PCB served notices to 71 apartment complexes in the city to construct their own STP. However, the majority of these complexes failed to meet the deadline due to a lack of adequate space. Last week, KSEB also issued notices to these apartments, warning of power cuts if they fail to set up STPs. To overcome this challenge, some of the apartment complexes are planning to convert their swimming pools into STPs. Residents suffer even as the govt's major project to have STPs in different parts of the city, as part of the integrated urban regeneration and water transport system (IURWTS) project, lies in limbo. If implemented, it would cater to the needs of all the apartments in the city within two to three years, COFVOAK representatives said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo Meanwhile, they have convened a meeting of the office bearers of the owners' associations of the 71 apartment complexes to which the PCB has sent notices. "We will be conducting the online meeting on Monday. We will chalk out further plans at the meeting," said Thomas Kadavan, treasurer, COFVOAK. "Most flats face space constraints. As most of these apartments were constructed before 2005, setting up of own STPs was not mandatory. Now, an apartment complex in Panampilly Nagar is planning to convert their swimming pool into an STP," he added. "As part of the IURWTS, STPs are being planned in different parts of the city. So, if we construct our own now, the STPs being constructed as part of IURWTS will go underutilised. This will be a wastage of public money. Hence, our plan is to approach govt to expedite the STP projects mooted by it. Until then, we can transport the sewage or slurry from our units by trucks to the existing STPs in the city like the one in Elamkulam or Marine Drive. " "Moreover, a new STP constructed by corporation is all set to commence operations at Brahmapuram. If the PCB gives a list of tanker trucks which transport sewage waste, we can utilise such trucks to transport the waste from our units to these STPs. What is needed is that the govt should expedite these projects and submit an affidavit before the court that such a mega project is being implemented and the issues can be sorted out once those projects materialise," Kadavan said. Meanwhile, T J Vinod, MLA, has sought the intervention of the govt in this regard. "Most of the apartment complexes face space constraints. So, we have taken up the issue with industries minister P Rajeeve. Proactive measures should be taken by the govt in this regard. The minister has promised to intervene in the matter," Vinod said.
