Sun's Saniya Rivers opens up on viral incident during Fever showdown

Yahoo18-07-2025
After a sustained period of success and WNBA championship contention, the Connecticut Sun have entered a rebuild amid speculation that the team's ownership may change hands in the months ahead.
Between 2017 and 2024, the Sun made eight playoff appearances and reached the WNBA Finals twice, with players like DeWanna Bonner, Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas propelling Connecticut into the league's elite.
But Bonner and Thomas departed Connecticut as free agents after the 2024 season, as did head coach Stephanie White. The Sun has entered a full rebuild around young players, and returning to winning ways will take some time.
Saniya Rivers is one of the young players around whom the Sun is building for the future. The eighth overall pick in the 2025 draft, Rivers has demonstrated potential as a 3-point shooter and as a versatile defender with a non-stop motor. But she found herself entangled in an unfortunate viral incident on Tuesday night, when the Sun hosted the Indiana Fever at TD Garden in Boston.

During the third quarter of the Sun's eventual 85-77 defeat, a fan sitting courtside in a Caitlin Clark shirsey was ejected after exchanging words with Rivers. There even was speculation that the fan made physical contact with Rivers prior to his ejection.
After the game, Rivers was able to set the record straight. She told reporters that the fan made a comment that warranted his dismissal, but he did not touch her. And fortunately, the rookie was able to emerge from the incident in good spirits, joking that the fan "wasted all that money on a seat just to get tossed."
Despite Connecticut's 3-19 record, Rivers and the young players around her are doing their best to remain professional amidst trying circumstances.

Havlicek Stole the Pod 10: What the Celtics need still need to do this offseason, with Justin Turpin

The Boston Celtics have waived point guard JD Davison, and with that act, have dipped below the NBA's dreaded second apron. One of their most important bits of unfinished business left for the Celtics in the 2025 offseason, Boston now has a few more pending issues to address, not the least of which deciding whether to use the roster spot opened up by Davison's exit. From the near-certain departure of vet forward Al Horford in free agency to potentially trading one or both of Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang to reduce the Celtics' cap hit, there is still a fair amount of work to be done before training camp rolls around in the fall. Should Boston sign former Los Angeles Clippers big man Ben Simmons, or try to bring on Summer Celtics star Charles Bassey to shore up the big man rotation? Is there another name out there worth pursuing for Boston? The cohosts of "Havlicek Stole the Pod," Daniel Donabedian and Justin Quinn (Alex Goldberg is taking the pod off) linked up with WEEI's Justin Turpin to talk about all the latest Celtics news from Davison's departure to Jaylen Brown training with Muay Thai, so be sure to tune in to this mid-summer update of what the Celtics have been up to -- and what they might do next. Some believe Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson to be the best player in the WNBA today, and her professional accolades seem to back that up. A seven-time All-Star, a four-time All-WNBA first-team selection, a three-time league MVP, two-time WNBA champion, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and WNBA Finals MVP, Wilson has a resume that's second-to-none. And despite the Aces falling to .500 with an 80-70 loss to the Indiana Fever on Thursday, Wilson still played like the best player on the court. The 28-year-old center scored a team-high 20 points along with six rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block — and she wrote her name in the WNBA record books as well.
