Assam Solution
The Home Minister, S B Chavan, is visiting Guwahati for two days to consult people from various sections on the possibility of a solution to the foreigners problem in Assam. Although the government has not fixed any date yet for the resumption of formal talks with the Assam agitation leaders, they may also be consulted during Chavan's Guwahati visit. Chavan's visit follows the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, which discussed the issue.
Women In CRPF
The Central Reserve Police Force is, for the first time, raising a battalion of women in an attempt to create a force of female police to be deployed in specific situations. Though it is being done on an experimental basis, the Home Ministry is credited with the view that such a force is necessary and should 'be given all the encouragement'. The role of policewomen in situations like communal riots and civil strife could go a long way in containing trouble, it is felt.
Oil In Cauvery
Oil and gas have been struck in the Cauvery Basin in Tamil Nadu. This is the second find of hydrocarbons in the onland Cauvery Basin in recent months. The Minister of State for Petroleum, Nawal Kishore, made this announcement in both houses of Parliament. The first oil find in the basin was made in January 1985. This was, however, a much smaller one and was located about 10 km from the present location.

NCP rehabilitates Suraj Chavan, names Nawab Malik as Mumbai poll strategist
MUMBAI: The Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has reinstated Maharashtra youth leader Suraj Chavan into the party's organisational fold, barely three weeks after removing him over a violent altercation that went viral on social media. Chavan has now been appointed general secretary of the state unit. NCP rehabilitates Suraj Chavan, names Nawab Malik as Mumbai poll strategist Chavan was sacked as state youth president on July 21 after a video surfaced showing him and other NCP workers punching and elbowing Vijay Ghadge, the state president of Maratha outfit 'Chhava Sangathana'. The footage triggered a political row, forcing his removal from the post. On Wednesday, NCP president Ajit Pawar brought Chavan back with a promotion. Within hours, the move drew sharp criticism from social activist Anjali Damania. 'From youth state president to directly promoted to party general secretary? Is this the good government of Maharashtra?' she posted on X. 'A person involved in brawls is made the party's general secretary by the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra. Wonderful.' Chavan remained unavailable for comment. In another significant organisational move, the party appointed senior leader and former minister Nawab Malik as chairperson of its election management committee for Mumbai, ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls likely early next year. In the absence of a city unit president, Malik is expected to wield complete control over preparations for the crucial civic election. The nine-member committee includes working presidents Shivajirao Nalawade and Siddharth Kamble, MLA Sana Malik, former MLA Zeeshan Siddique, and office-bearers Santosh Dhuwali (state general secretary), Bhaskar Vichare (state vice-president), Sanjay Tatkare (state spokesperson) and Raju Ghuge. 'In the backdrop of BMC polls, it was decided to form an election management committee for Mumbai under the chairmanship of the senior party leader Nawabhai Malik. With the guidance of this committee and the active participation of all workers, I am fully confident that the NCP will perform effectively in the BMC elections,' Pawar said in a post on X. 'With the decision, Malik has become the de facto head of the Mumbai unit,' said a senior NCP leader. The Mumbai president's post has been vacant since Sameer Bhujbal resigned to contest the state assembly elections from Nandgaon in Nashik as an independent candidate. Malik's appointment is also seen as part of the leadership's effort to bring him back into mainstream politics. Last year, he was fielded from the Mankhurd–Shivaji Nagar constituency despite objections from the BJP.

This year, governor Santosh Gangwar will unfurl the Tricolour in Ranchi as chief minister Hemant Soren is away at Nemra in Ramgarh for the shradh rituals of his father, Shibu Soren, who passed away on August 4. The rehearsal included all formal activities planned for the main event, with both the DC and SSP taking the salute. The participating platoons are CRPF, ITBP, SSB, CISF, Jharkhand Jaguar, Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP)-1, JAP-2, JAP-10, Ranchi Police (male and female contingents), Home Guard, NCC (boys and girls), and Bihar Police. Assistant superintendent of police Shruti will serve as parade commander, with probationary deputy SP Dusruwan Singh as second commander. Addressing the briefing for deputed magistrates and police officers, Bhajantri said, "All officers must have full knowledge of their duties and deployment points, and ensure arrangements for the timely arrival and departure of dignitaries." SSP Chandan Sinha emphasised strict security protocols, instructing that "all visitors must be thoroughly screened and no unauthorised person or objectionable item should be allowed into the venue. " South Chhotanagpur divisional commissioner Anjani Kumar Mishra and the DC formally invited the governor as the chief guest for the I-Day celebrations. "We have briefed the governor on the preparations and programme schedule, and all arrangements are in place," Bhajantri said. Across Ranchi, markets and streets have also decked up in the national colours. In the run-up to the celebrations on Friday, a group of youngsters took to the streets on Wednesday carrying a massive 300-ft-long Tricolour. The procession, which started at the Morabadi ground to the Albert Ekka Chowk, passed through prominent roads of the city. "We are training to join the armed forces and serve the nation for as long as we live. This rally is our way of expressing our respect and love for the country. We hope this march will inspire more youths to join the armed forces and nurture a sense of pride for the country," said a young participant. Ranchi CRPF group centre also took out a 350-feet tricolour rally from the camp, where family members of the jawans, students, and commoners actively participated. The camp took initiatives to distribute tricolours among the public in cycling, biking, and marching through the city. "Independence Day is an opportunity to celebrate the valour and patriotism exemplified by our forefathers and reminisce about their contributions, for which we are now living in a free country. Like every year, this year also we observed the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign and distributed tricolours to instil patriotism among the commoners, especially the youngsters," said DIG of the group centre D N Lal. The Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Manch also took out a rally. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
