Benedict Cumberbatch Ate Five Meals a Day to Play Doctor Strange, Says Hollywood Is ‘Grossly Wasteful': ‘It's Horrific Eating Beyond Your Appetite… I Could Feed a Family With the Amount' I Ate

Benedict Cumberbatch called Hollywood a 'grossly wasteful industry' during an interview on 'Ruthie's Table 4' podcast. The Oscar nominee is no stranger to massive studio productions given his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Cumberbatch loves undergoing a 'body transformation' for his work, he also says 'it's horrific eating beyond your appetite.'
'Going back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability, it's just like, what am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I'm eating,' Cumberbatch said, noting he would eat five meals a day while getting into Doctor Strange shape in addition to snacks like boiled eggs, almonds and cheese in between meals.

'It's a grossly wasteful industry,' he continued. 'Think about set builds that aren't recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy. The amount of wattage you need to create daylight and consistent light in a studio environment. It's a lot of energy.'
Cumberbatch admitted that actors are routinely slammed and branded as hypocrites when they speak out in support of sustainability in Hollywood given how wasteful the industry is, but the actor noted that he tries to 'push the green initiative' on his film sets as both an actor and a producer.
'You don't have to give the crew plastic bottles,' he said as an example. If you're in the middle of a desert and you can't get glass bottles there, fair enough. But we're in 21st Century.'
Cumberbatch is on a press tour for his upcoming movie 'The Roses,' a reimagining of the 1981 novel 'The War of the Roses' by Warren Adler. The book previously spawned a 1989 film adaptation of the same name starring Michael Douglas Kathleen Turner Danny DeVito G. D. Spradlin. Cumberbatch's new version co-stars Olivia Colman. The duo play a married couple who self-destruct during a bitter divorce.
'The Roses' opens August 29 from Searchlight Pictures. Watch Cumberbatch's full interview on 'Ruthie's Table 4' podcast in the video below.

Gwyneth Paltrow Plays F, Marry, Kill With Her Costars

Gwyneth Paltrow just played "Fuck, Marry, Kill" with three of the hottest leading men in Hollywood, and her answers were absolute perfection. On a July 22 episode of The Goop Podcast, the 52-year-old actor sat down for a special "Ask Me Anything" where she shared whether or not she should have sex, marry, or get rid of three famous costars. The three actors in question were Robert Downey Jr., Timothée Chalamet, and Jude Law. Gwyneth starred in Marvel Cinematic Universe's Iron Man and Avengers franchises as Pepper Potts, the employee turned wife of Tony Stark (Robert). Gwyneth played Dickie Greenleaf's (Jude) girlfriend, Marge Sherwood, in 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley. As for Timothée, Gwyneth is starring with him in the A24 film Marty Surpreme, slated for release on December 25, 2025. "This is impossible... there's no way I can answer this," Gwyneth said, before responding with the most logical answer. "I would marry Robert because we would just laugh so much and have such a fun, weird life and travel," she said. "And, anyway, I'm already, basically, I am married to him in movies, so what's the difference?" At first, she landed on Jude for "fuck" sharing it's "only because it's like robbing the cradle, really, if I do it with Timothée. I think my children would kill me if I did that." That left Gwyneth with only one person to kill, but then the Goop founder flipped the switch on the problematic game with an answer that had me snapping my fingers and saying, "yes, queen." "I'm gonna marry and fuck all three, how's that?" she added. "I'm a modern woman, I'm not killing anymore. Peace out." How about that, indeed? To be honest, this type of game shouldn't exist in the first place because what do you mean you have to "kill" somebody? But I appreciate Gwyneth's answer, because why should you be forced to choose one or the other? Everybody can get it. Funnily enough, this isn't the first time she's been presented with this wacky ultimatum. On a 2023 episode of Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper, Gwyneth played the game with her real-life exes: Brad Pitt, whom she dated from 1994 to 1997, after meeting on the set of the movie Se7en. They were engaged in 1996 before breaking it off a year later. Ben Affleck, whom she dated from 1999 to 2000. They starred in a couple of films together, like Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Bounce (2000). And her ex-husband Chris Martin, whom she married from 2003 before they consciously uncoupled in 2014, and split in 2016. They share two children, Apple and Moses. Long story short, Gwyneth, who described Brad as "the sort of major chemistry, love of your life, kind of, at the time," chose to F him. As for who to marry, she picked the easy answer and said she would marry Chris and "Do that all again" since "he gave me my two children, who are the loves of my life." Unfortunately, that left Ben with the less desirable option from the game. "Ben, yeah, bless him," she said, noting that he was "technically excellent" in bed, so it wasn't all bad for The Accountant star. Watch to the full episode The Goop Podcast to see Gwyneth talk about less salacious topics like about hormone therapy, menopause, and her favorite foods.

In 1917, Lionel (Mescal) — a young, talented music student — meets David (O'Connor) at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel's life far beyond his own awareness. Set in the backdrop of World War I, the film features traditional folks songs. Who's in the cast? In addition to Mescal and O'Connor, the film stars Molly Price, Alison Bartlett, and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation). Watch the trailer Who directed it? The History of Sound is helmed by BAFTA nominee Oliver Hermanus (Living). 'I've been living with this film, this story, for five years. This film has been a personal and defining journey; it has moved me to a new country, educated me about the power of music and song, it has conjured a re-evaluation of love and the bonds that last a lifetime," Hermanus said in a statement. "The History of Sound is not simply the story of queer lives hidden due to a time of denial, of shame and secrecy. It is the story of a man's life, expressed through the power of sound — as memory, as emotion… As family. Our film is an offering of an idea, a very potent one — what if one's first love, one's great love, and one's last love are all in one, and all too soon in one's life? … What is it to live a life that is an echo? What does it sound like, in retrospect? And if offered a choice, would you change the course of your life's path? Made with a deep affection for cinema that does not shout or scream its intention, our film invites you to enjoy song and spirit, to celebrate life in all its wonder — its losses, its grief, its remembrance, and most of all, its undeniable and indelible mark — love.' Who wrote it? The film, written by Ben Shattuck, is adapted from his short story of the same name. Who else is behind it? The production team features cinematographer Alexander Dynan, music supervisor Lucy Bright, and editor Chris Wyatt. Susan Shopmaker handled casting, with production design by Deborah Jensen and costumes by Miyako Bellizzi. When does it come out? Mubi will be releasing the film in theaters Sept. 12.
