Bihar CM reviews Ganga revival works at Bakhtiyarpur; stresses on timely completion
Accompanied by Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of efforts aimed at reviving the old stream of the Ganga River.
During his visit, CM Nitish Kumar inspected the old staircase at Seedhi Ghat and sought updates on the various works from the Principal Secretary of the Water Resources Department, Santosh Kumar Mall.
He issued firm instructions to the officials to accelerate the pace of the work so it could be completed before the onset of monsoon.
'This work is important for restoring the natural flow of the river and for the convenience of the people visiting the Ghat. It must be completed on time,' the Chief Minister stressed.
The project aims to clean the silt and rejuvenate a 4,420-metre stretch of the old Ganga stream from Ghansurpur to Dedoor in Bakhtiyarpur block, Patna district.
The project has an administrative approval of Rs 3,427.80 lakh. Geo bag slope pitching is being implemented along 1,520 metres to prevent erosion near densely populated areas like Ghansurpur, Karauta, and Hatia.
The officials informed the Chief Minister that provisions have also been made for three years of channel maintenance to ensure consistent water flow.
A second component of the project focusses specifically on Seedhi Ghat, with an estimated cost of Rs 56.06 crore.
The work includes 330-metres of staircase construction, 2,100-metres of erosion protection and pathway development 1,100 metres upstream, 1,000 metres downstream, toilet facilities, landscaping, and lighting installations, and acquisition for a connecting path near Seedhi Ghat temple and JMT school.
The target completion date for this phase of the project is June 2025.
The Chief Minister also offered prayers at Shri Radhe Krishna Temple at Seedhi Ghat, praying for the happiness, peace, and prosperity of Bihar.
He later paid homage to freedom fighter and former MP Pandit Sheelbhadra Yajee and his wife Balkeshwari Yajee by offering floral tributes at their samadhi sthal.

State will take steps to control ‘goondaraj': CM
Bhubaneswar: OdishaChief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday said he has given 'absolute power' to the police to take action against those involved in crimes against women. Addressing the Independence Day function at Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar, Majhi said his government will not hesitate to bring a special legislation to 'completely end' organised crimes. From the function, the Chief Minister also announced an additional 5 kg of rice will be provided to the poor people in 11 districts for three months. 'People who are involved in crimes against women have no place in society, they must be in jail. Therefore, I have given absolute power to the police to take necessary actions in such cases,' he said. Majhi said nobody, how influential he may be, will be spared if he is involved in crimes against women. The statement came as the State reported a slew of crimes against women, with the Opposition raising questions on the law and order situation. 'The law and order situation of the State is more or less under control. However, we have to strengthen and make it more effective,' he said. Noting that intoxication was one of the major factors behind the rise in crimes, Majhi said he has directed the police to against such activities. 'The government will take all measures to firmly control 'goondaraj'. The process of identification of criminals has already started,' he said. 'In order to completely end organised crimes, the State government will not hesitate to bring special legislation. Extortion and other such activities are completely illegal and those will be considered as organised crimes and dealt with firmly,' he said. Majhi said his government was committed to making colleges and universities safe for women by implementing initiatives like 'Shaktishree'. He maintained that women's empowerment is not just a slogan for his government. 'We have provided financial assistance to over 1 crore women through 'Subhadra Yojana'. Women have been able to become small entrepreneurs by utilising the assistance. The State has so far produced 17 lakh 'lakhpati didis',' he said. The Chief Minister said the State's commitment to women's empowerment is evident from the 2025-26 annual budget, in which allocations of Rs 89,861 crore have been made for schemes in regard to this. Listing the social welfare measures undertaken by his government, Majhi announced that 27 lakh poor families, who are beneficiaries of the 'Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana', in 11 districts will be given 5 kg additional rice per month for three months free of cost.

Odisha to form tech panel for Metro rail
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to set up a technical committee comprising senior officers and experts to draft a fresh and comprehensive plan for the proposed Bhubaneswar Metro rail project. The decision was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo. The earlier project plan prepared by the previous BJD government has been scrapped and a fresh one will be designed and executed with support from the Centre, Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said. 'We will form a technical committee including department secretaries, officers and experts. They will visit other Metro-operating cities to study best practices and prepare a new route plan, identify parking spaces and finalise other infrastructure needs,' Mahapatra told reporters. A fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared based on the committee's findings and the Centre's support will be sought for the project's execution, he added. Singh Deo emphasised the importance of studying Metro systems in other cities, pointing out that many projects are running at a loss, with the burden falling on State governments. 'So, it has been decided to study the projects in other cities and submit the report to the government. Further action will be taken on the basis of the report,' he said. The previous BJD government had proposed to take up the first phase of the Metro project on a 26-km-long stretch between Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar to Trisulia in Cuttack at an investment of Rs 6,225 crore. Soil testing and other ground work were also initiated by the then government. Meanwhile, the Opposition BJD has criticised the BJP government for allegedly pushing the Metro rail project into uncertainty. The BJD spokesperson, Lenin Mohanty, accused the government of misleading people. 'The Hyderabad and Bengaluru Metro projects are profitable. The previous Naveen Patnaik government had taken concrete steps to implement the Metro rail in Odisha. The BJP government lacks sincerity and is only confusing the public with contradictory statements,' Mohanty said. He said the Naveen Patnaik-led government took necessary steps to start the Metro project in a developing State like Odisha. Mohanty pointed out that ministers have made conflicting remarks—one suggesting the Metro will be elevated, another suggesting it will go underground—adding to the confusion.
