Bihar CM reviews Ganga revival works at Bakhtiyarpur; stresses on timely completion
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday conducted a detailed inspection of the ongoing development works along the Ganga Ghats from Ghansurpur to Seedhi Ghat in Bakhtiyarpur.
Accompanied by Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of efforts aimed at reviving the old stream of the Ganga River.
During his visit, CM Nitish Kumar inspected the old staircase at Seedhi Ghat and sought updates on the various works from the Principal Secretary of the Water Resources Department, Santosh Kumar Mall.
He issued firm instructions to the officials to accelerate the pace of the work so it could be completed before the onset of monsoon.
'This work is important for restoring the natural flow of the river and for the convenience of the people visiting the Ghat. It must be completed on time,' the Chief Minister stressed.
The project aims to clean the silt and rejuvenate a 4,420-metre stretch of the old Ganga stream from Ghansurpur to Dedoor in Bakhtiyarpur block, Patna district.
The project has an administrative approval of Rs 3,427.80 lakh. Geo bag slope pitching is being implemented along 1,520 metres to prevent erosion near densely populated areas like Ghansurpur, Karauta, and Hatia.
The officials informed the Chief Minister that provisions have also been made for three years of channel maintenance to ensure consistent water flow.
A second component of the project focusses specifically on Seedhi Ghat, with an estimated cost of Rs 56.06 crore.
The work includes 330-metres of staircase construction, 2,100-metres of erosion protection and pathway development 1,100 metres upstream, 1,000 metres downstream, toilet facilities, landscaping, and lighting installations, and acquisition for a connecting path near Seedhi Ghat temple and JMT school.
The target completion date for this phase of the project is June 2025.
The Chief Minister also offered prayers at Shri Radhe Krishna Temple at Seedhi Ghat, praying for the happiness, peace, and prosperity of Bihar.
He later paid homage to freedom fighter and former MP Pandit Sheelbhadra Yajee and his wife Balkeshwari Yajee by offering floral tributes at their samadhi sthal.

Karnataka Home Minister requests construction of 'Welcome' arch on Tumkur highway
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 9 (ANI): Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Monday said that he has requested Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to give permission for the construction of a 'Welcome' arch on the National Highway in Tumkur. Speaking to reporters at Sadashivanagar, Tumkur District in-charge Minister said that Rs 5 crore has been provided from the Smart City project to build the Welcome arch on the National Highway in Tumkur. 'Union Minister V Somanna is the MP of our district. I have requested Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari through V Somanna and asked him to give permission. If permission is given, we will build a welcome arch at the beginning of Tumkur,' Parameshwara said. Parameshwara further added that many central projects need to be implemented in the district. 'Many projects related to drinking water come under the purview of the central government. Our taluk is included in this, and I have discussed it with them, he said. He further added, 'Since Tumkur city is next to the national highway, no one will know while traveling. If a welcome arch is built, it will be known.' According to Parameshwara, Union Minister Somanna will 'speak after seeing what the state government's decisions will be regarding the metro project' for Tumkur. Parameshwara stressed on Tumkur's growth and said that the district should be expanded. 'We have made an industrial hub on 20 thousand acres. Many people are asking that Tumkur should be expanded. A study is underway on this. Tumkur is 70 km from Bangalore. It will be beneficial in terms of development if it is included in the Greater Bengaluru area. We will also submit a proposal,' he said. While speaking on the Suhas Shetty murder case, Parameshwara said, 'Officials have told me that a letter has been received from the Union Home Department regarding the Suhas Shetty murder case. We will discuss this with the officials and take a decision. People from that area were talking about handing over the case to the NIA for investigation. Someone may have requested it. MPs and MLAs may have said so.' Shetty, a prominent right-wing youth leader associated with the Bajrang Dal in Karnataka's coastal belt, was brutally murdered last month in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district. The activist, in his early 30s, was attacked by unidentified assailants while returning home late at night. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The incident triggered widespread protests in the region, with local Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) units alleging a targeted killing. While speaking on the tragic stampede that occured during the IPL victory celebration event of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Bengaluru, Parameshwara called the June 4 incident 'unfortunate' and said that an investigation is underway and the report will soon be submitted. 'I will not speak about the stampede incident. We have entrusted this case to the one-man commission of retired judge Michael D Cunha. He will investigate and submit a report. If we give a statement, it will have a different impact. If we are asked during the investigation, we will tell. If we give a statement now, the direction of the investigation will go in a different direction,' he remarked. Earlier on Thursday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that a one-member commission has been formed to probe the incident. CM Siddaramaiah also announced that the state government has decided to suspend top police department officials, including the Commissioner of Bengaluru City Police. Speaking to the media, the Karnataka CM stated, 'Under the chairmanship of Justice Michael D'Cunha, a retired judge of the High Court, we have appointed a one-man commission to investigate the incident.' India sees 53 pc drop in Naxal violence over past decade
By Rajnish Singh New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): In a significant development towards achieving a Naxal-free India, there has been a 53 per cent drop in the incidents of Naxal violence over the last ten years between 2014 and 2024, compared to the decade before, government data suggests. Between 2004 and 2014, the data mentions, there were 16,463 incidents of Naxal violence. However, from 2014 to 2024, the number dropped to 7,744. As per the officials in the security establishment, the reduction in Naxal violence reflects 'the success of intensified counter-insurgency operations and strategic policies by security forces.' The impact has also been seen in the number of casualties, as the deaths of security personnel fell by a dramatic 73 per cent, from 1,851 in 2004-2014 to 509 in 2014-2024. Similarly, civilian deaths declined by 70 per cent, dropping from 4,766 to 1,495 over the same period, 2024-2025. The data also show that the trend continued strongly into 2024 and 2025. In 2024 alone, 290 Naxals were neutralised, 1,090 were arrested, and 881 surrendered. Among those neutralised were 18 top Naxal leaders, a major blow to the insurgent command structure. In 2025 (till now), 226 Naxals have been killed, 418 arrested (including 2 Central Committee Members), and 896 have surrendered. These figures highlight the continuing momentum of the government's efforts against Naxalism or Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). The coordinated actions of security forces and the surrender policy seem to be yielding long-term peace dividends in previously affected regions. The government's aggressive anti-Naxal operations over the past few years have dealt a decisive blow to the insurgency's top leadership structure. A total of 18 top Naxal leaders, many of them Central Committee Members (CCMs) and Politburo Members (PBMs), have been neutralised between 2019 and 2025. Many of these figures carried heavy cash bounties, ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1.47 crore. The most high-profile eliminations among them are Rukla Srinivas alias Ramtra (CCM) - reward of Rs 1.4 crore - neutralised in 2019; Buryari Sudhakar (CCM) - neutralised in 2019; Prashant Bose alias Kisan Da (PBM) - reward of Rs 1.47 crore - neutralised in 2021; Sheela Marandi (CCM) - neutralised in 2021; B.G. Krishnamurthy (CCM) - neutralised in 2021; Milind Teltumbde alias Deepak (CCM) - reward of Rs 50 lakh - neutralised in 2021; Yapa Narayan Rao alias Haribhushan (CCM) - neutralised in 2021; and Akkiraju Haragopal alias RK (CCM) - neutralised in 2021. Besides, Vijay Arya, alias Jaspal (CCM), Mitlesh Mehta, alias Mitlesh Prasad (CCM), and Arun Kumar Bhattacharya, alias Kanchan (CCM), were neutralised in 2022. Kudakam Sudarshan alias Anand (PBM) - carrying a reward of Rs 1 crore, Pramod Mishra (PBM) and Sanjay Deepak Rao (CCM) were neutralised in 2023. In a major symbolic and operational breakthrough, Basav Raju, the General Secretary of CPI-Maoist, was neutralised in 2025 under the continuing offensive operations. With a bounty of over Rs 1 crore, Raju was the highest-ranking Maoist leader killed so far and a key ideologue behind the group's armed struggle. Chalapathi Pratap Reddy (CCM), another top commander carrying a Rs 1 crore reward, was also eliminated in 2025, marking a significant collapse of Maoist central leadership. These high-value neutralisations were carried out under coordinated intelligence-led operations, often with the support of local informants and sophisticated tracking techniques. (ANI)

S Jaishankar welcomes Belgium's support and solidarity in combatting terrorism
Brussels [Belgium], June 9 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar began his visit to Belgium on Monday with a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and combating terrorism. He appreciated Belgium's support in combating terrorism and welcomed their solidarity and emphasised the strong momentum in the India-EU partnership, highlighting the potential for collaboration in clean energy, mobility, and pharmaceuticals. The two leaders discussed deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, defense, and security. Sharing the details in a post on X on Monday, EAM said, 'Pleased to meet DPM & FM @prevotmaxime at the start of my visit to Belgium. Welcomed Belgium's support and solidarity in combatting terrorism. Appreciated the strong momentum of our bilateral engagement and the India - EU partnership. Also held wide - ranging discussions on deepening our cooperation including in trade, investment, technology, defence & security, pharmaceuticals, clean energy and mobility.' Jaishankar's visit to Brussels comes three months after Princess Astrid of Belgium led a 300-member economic mission to India. The recent visit by Princess Astrid, who met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar, discussed key areas such as labor migration, pharmaceuticals, defense, diamonds, space exploration, and green energy. Interestingly, Jaishankar's visit coincides with the detention of fugitive Indian diamantaire Mehul Choksi in a Belgian jail. Choksi, accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of Rs 13,850 crore, was arrested in mid-April on India's extradition request. India has an extradition treaty with Belgium, and the government is likely to pursue Choksi's extradition during the EAM's visit. Jaishankar is on an official visit to France, the European Union (EU), and Belgium from June 8 to 14, 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs announced in a press release on Sunday. The visit marks a significant step in further strengthening India's strategic partnerships with Europe. The EAM will first travel to Paris and Marseille, France, where he will hold bilateral discussions with the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, Jean Noel Barrot. The EAM will hold a Strategic Dialogue with the EU High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas. According to the MEA press release, 'India-European Union strategic partnership has strengthened over the years across diverse sectors and got a big boost with the first-ever visit of the EU College of Commissioners to India in February this year.' Jaishankar will also meet senior leadership from the European Commission and European Parliament and interact with think tanks and media. MEA in its statement noted that the Belgium leg would also see the EAM meet members of the Indian community during his visit. The MEA highlighted, 'India and Belgium share warm and friendly relations along with a very robust economic partnership. Today the collaboration between the two countries spans various domains like trade and investment, green energy, technology, pharmaceutical, diamond sector and strong people-to-people ties.' The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the visit is expected to further deepen India's friendly relations with the European Union, France and Belgium and give renewed momentum to ongoing cooperation in diverse areas.
