State will take steps to control ‘goondaraj': CM

'People who are involved in crimes against women have no place in society, they must be in jail.
Therefore, I have given absolute power to the police to take necessary actions in such cases,' he said. Majhi said nobody, how influential he may be, will be spared if he is involved in crimes against women. The statement came as the State reported a slew of crimes against women, with the Opposition raising questions on the law and order situation.
'The law and order situation of the State is more or less under control. However, we have to strengthen and make it more effective,' he said. Noting that intoxication was one of the major factors behind the rise in crimes, Majhi said he has directed the police to against such activities.
'The government will take all measures to firmly control 'goondaraj'. The process of identification of criminals has already started,' he said.
'In order to completely end organised crimes, the State government will not hesitate to bring special legislation. Extortion and other such activities are completely illegal and those will be considered as organised crimes and dealt with firmly,' he said.
Majhi said his government was committed to making colleges and universities safe for women by implementing initiatives like 'Shaktishree'.
He maintained that women's empowerment is not just a slogan for his government.
'We have provided financial assistance to over 1 crore women through 'Subhadra Yojana'. Women have been able to become small entrepreneurs by utilising the assistance. The State has so far produced 17 lakh 'lakhpati didis',' he said.
The Chief Minister said the State's commitment to women's empowerment is evident from the 2025-26 annual budget, in which allocations of Rs 89,861 crore have been made for schemes in regard to this. Listing the social welfare measures undertaken by his government, Majhi announced that 27 lakh poor families, who are beneficiaries of the 'Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana', in 11 districts will be given 5 kg additional rice per month for three months free of cost.

Another surrogacy racket busted in Telangana; woman, son held
HYDERABAD: The Pet Basheerabad police on Friday arrested nine individuals, including a 27-year-old chemical engineering graduate from JNTU and his mother, for allegedly running an illegal commercial surrogacy and egg trading operation. The prime accused have been identified as Narreddula Narender Reddy, the JNTU graduate, and his mother Narreddula Laxmi Reddy (alias Laxmi). The others arrested include surrogate mothers from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh: Golconda Sai Leela, Malagalla Venkata Laxmi, P Sunitha, Sadala Satyavathi, Pantada Aparna, and J Ramanamma. Police seized Rs 6.47 lakh in cash, a laptop, promissory notes, non-judicial bond papers, and medical supplies, including Dispo Van syringes (2ml, 3ml, 5ml), pregnancy medicines, and hormone injections (Progesterone). Case sheets of two women from Hegde Hospital were also recovered. Medchal DCP N Koti Reddy said the racket came to light after a raid on a house in Chintal. Investigation revealed that Laxmi Reddy, a former egg donor and surrogate mother, had previously been arrested by Mumbai police in a similar case. JNTU grad helped mom in surrogacy biz After relocating to Hyderabad, she approached fertility clinics and agents to recruit financially vulnerable women as egg donors or surrogates. Her son, Narender Reddy, an unemployed graduate, allegedly assisted her in running the illegal operation, which served as their primary income source. The surrogate mothers were reportedly aware of the prohibition on commercial surrogacy but participated for monetary gain. The fertility clinics under the scanner are: Hegde Fertility Hospital, Anu Test Tube Centre, FertyCare, EVA IVF, Amulya IVF Centre, and Sree Fertility Centre. Medchal-Malkajgiri DM&HO C Uma Gouri said: 'The investigation will reveal how these surrogacies were facilitated. We are scrutinising documents and have a list of suspected clinics. Regular raids are conducted, and unlicensed centres are immediately shut down.' She, however, said that while the accused named multiple hospitals, their actual involvement remains unconfirmed. This bust fol lows the Gopalapuram police's July crackdown on an interstate illegal surrogacy and baby-selling ring, where 25 people, including P Namratha, were arrested.

Today, democracy is fighting for its very survival against Sanatan ideology," he said, and urged political parties and activists to work together to safeguard secular and democratic traditions. Criticising the privatisation of sanitation work in Chennai, Thirumavalavan urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to formally recognise sanitation workers as government employees. Meanwhile, he welcomed the welfare measures announced for workers, including insurance cover, free breakfast schemes, educational assistance, and subsidies for self-employment. MKU college increases fees by 10% annually, students hit
MADURAI: Students of Madurai Kamaraj University College in Tallakulam have appealed to the state government to regularise fees, saying the college has been increasing it by 10% every year based on the syndicate decision. Established in 1994, the college offers 16 UG and seven PG courses. More than 3,500 students, most of whom are from economically weaker sections, are studying in the institution. More than 200 teaching and non-teaching staff are working here, of which 21 are MKU teaching faculties, and the rest are guest lecturers who are paid consolidated salary of Rs 25,000. Speaking to TNIE, M Kavitha (name changed), a student, said she had joined the college because of the fees was less. However, the college is revising it by 10% every year, which is a burden on her parents. 'MKU authorities must look into this and revoke the syndicate order. None of the colleges in the city increases fees every year. The infrastructure here is very average, and does not match the fees they collect,' she said. The Students Federation of India (SFI) has been continuously fighting against the fee hike. 'So far we have given several representations to the collector, authorities of MKU and higher education department. We even staged protests, but they have gone in vain. What is the need to increase the fees every year? Salaries for teaching staff have remained the same for the last few years. Though it is a state-run university's college, it is collecting more than ten times the government approved fees,' said SFI district secretary C David Rajadurai.
