Palisades Fire rebuild continues with plans for rebuilt rec center

The Brief
Officials announced plans to rebuild the Palisades Recreation Center.
The new park will feature a gym, sports fields and tennis, pickleball and basketball courts.
The old rec center was destroyed in the Palisades Fire.
LOS ANGELES - Officials in the Pacific Palisades announced plans to reconstruct the Palisades Recreation Center on Thursday, months after the center was destroyed in the Palisades Fire.
What we know
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Rick Caruso, her opponent in the 2022 mayoral election, held the joint press conference Thursday morning, alongside Los Angeles Lakers' Head Coach JJ Redick.
The new park will include a gym, sports fields and tennis, pickleball and basketball courts. The previous Palisades Rec Center burned down during January's Palisades Fire.
A partnership between the City of Los Angeles, Caruso's Steadfast LA and the LA Strong Sports Foundation will carry out the project.
What they're saying
"We need to reimagine and rebuild this park," said Redick.
Mayor Bass called the construction "a step forward" for the Pacific Palisades on their road to recovery after the fire.
SUGGESTED: Rebuilding underway in Palisades Fire zone
Caruso said the park will be, "no doubt one of the greatest parks in the United States for families."
Caruso has been critical of the mayor's handling of the Palisades Fire since day one. As the fire ripped through town, he called FOX 11 to share his thoughts during the broadcast.
On Thursday, some residents thanked them for putting aside differences for the Rec Center project. While the mayor emphasized urgency on the rebuild, saying things are moving faster than expected.
Dig deeper
One concern residents and builders have expressed to FOX 11 is security checkpoints currently setup to access the Palisades. The checkpoints cause lines of traffic that can have construction crews and homeowners sometimes waiting for an hour to get to their home.
FOX 11 asked Bass and Caruso how they feel about the security checkpoints.
"That's something I want to come together with the neighbors to decide," said Bass. "It is something, people want to be here, they want to make sure [they are] secure, but on the other hand, it's really a barrier. I was talking to several of the leaders just yesterday about what do we do to phase this out, but [also] keep people secure at the same time."
SUGGESTED: Eaton Fire survivors struggling with housing, essential supplies 3 months after wildfire
"It's a ridiculous thing that you're waiting two hours and you're checking someone's driver's license. What are we doing here," said Caruso. "I called the founder of Clear. I said, 'Would you develop an app on Clear and donate it to the city that gets people on their phone clearance that they could just drive up, get cleared and go?"
The two political rivals still disagree on some things, but are now teaming up for the new rec center.
"Working together with private philanthropy, that's the way we can get things done quickly," said Bass.

Lakers GM Rob Pelinka compared Adou Thiero to premier 3-and-D wing

The Los Angeles Lakers have made some key additions this summer that have made their roster look at least a little better than it was when they lost in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs. They added center Deandre Ayton in order to significantly plug what was a huge hole at the 5 spot, and they also signed emerging 3-point sniper Jake LaRavia and 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart. In late June, the Lakers made a couple of moves in order to move up in the draft and snag Adou Thiero with the No. 36 pick. Thiero, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward out of the University of Arkansas, is known for his ability to attack the basket off the dribble and his high-level athleticism. He also has the ability to become an excellent defender, but his outside shooting needs lots of work. Still, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka didn't hesitate to compare Thiero to OG Anunoby, one of the NBA's best 3-and-D players. 'Obviously OG is an incredible player that's done so much in the league. I don't want to put pressure on anyone to become someone else, but that archetype is definitely it. He's got the 6'7″ frame, he's incredibly explosive, I think he's a developing shooter, he's a lob catcher. I think on the other side of the ball, he's gonna be an elite defender. He has all the tools there. JJ Redick and I actually hosted him in our building a couple weeks ago, took him to lunch and really got to know his character. That's such an important part of the equation and he's a great young man and hungry to get better and learn and grow and we feel like we have a great player development staff here. Super excited about all that.' Anunoby started off his career by contributing off the bench when the Toronto Raptors won the NBA championship in his second season. He blossomed a couple of years later, and he is now a major part of a New York Knicks squad that has become a legitimate championship contender. Thiero just happened to name Anunoby as a player he's looking to learn from. John Calipari, who coached him in college, implied that the teams that passed on him in the draft will end up regretting that decision. The 21-year-old missed summer league last month due to a knee injury he sustained several months ago. However, he reportedly started working out at the Lakers' facility recently and is expected to be ready for training camp.

"I know how much effort he worked this summer" - Boban Marjanovic believes Luka Doncic can win the MVP this coming season

"I know how much effort he worked this summer" - Boban Marjanovic believes Luka Doncic can win the MVP this coming season originally appeared on Basketball Network. Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic's former teammate, Boban Marjanovic, is unsurprised to see the Slovenian native's body transformation this summer. According to Marjanovic, Doncic's focus has always been to win, and if that meant getting in the best physical shape possible, the Slovenian native would do everything he could to achieve that. "Luka is the best. Luka is like a hard worker. He's always in the gym, he always works out. He always competes. And this is what he wants to do. He wants the best of himself and he's really best, you know, like all these moves that he does right now. He works on it and basically he is gifted to make every move that he wants even when he sees on a video he is capable of making moves immediately even better than some guy shown on video like the top basketball players in the world, he basically can do immediately. He's super strong, super powerful," Marjanovic recently said in an appearance on Yahoo! Sports Daily. Doncic is primed to win the MVP award Now in the best shape of his career, there's more optimism for Luka to finally nab the MVP award this coming season, with the expectation that he will miss fewer games due to injury. It also helps that the 6'7" guard is coming off a season wherein he was traded by his former team, the Dallas Mavericks, which sets up the narrative of this year being some sort of vengeance tour for him. In addition, Doncic will be entering his first full season with the Lakers on a retooled roster compared to the post-trade deadline team that competed last playoffs. He averaged 28.2 points, 7.5 assists, and 8.1 rebounds in 28 games as a Laker, and given that the adjustment phase is done, Marjanovic said it's fair to think that the sky's the limit for the former Maverick this coming season. "I know his mental strength and how he works and how he basically plays for his national team and every summer, even if he's tired, he'll have a full season in the NBA, he's still right now in the national team and playing for his country. What makes him like yes, you know, you're never tired, you work hard and everything he does, he works because of basketball," said Boban. For Doncic to win MVP Being in the best shape of his career won't be enough for Doncic to win the MVP award, but it's certainly a great start. For the international superstar to win the aforementioned award, he must lead the Lakers to at least a top seed in the competitive Western Conference. He must lead his team in most statistical categories, and while competing with his competitors, which won't be an easy task. That's why this is where Doncic's work this summer will have to pay off, which Marjanovic thinks will happen. "I know how much effort he worked this summer and how he worked like all these years that we know each other and I have full respect for him," added Boban. With two months to go until the regular season, there's certainly a ton of hype around Doncic's transformative summer.. Whether it'll be a pivotal difference remains up in the air, but suffice it to say that the expectations are once again going to be monumental for the incoming eight-year guard. Anything less than an MVP or a championship would be a story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

What is Luka Doncic's status for Slovenia's friendly match on Tuesday?

Los Angeles Lakers fans experienced a real scare on Saturday when Luka Doncic, the team's new franchise player, collided with one of his teammates during a friendly match with the Slovenian national team in advance of EuroBasket 2025. Doncic appeared to suffer a knee injury, and he was forced to leave the game. Fortunately, he was diagnosed with a mere knee contusion, and it was reported that the ailment wasn't thought to be serious. Doncic was expected to participate in practice on Monday, and it was determined that he's good to go. Therefore, the Slovenian national team announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he will play in the team's next friendly on Tuesday versus Great Britain (translated into English). "myteam ready for tomorrow's match against Great Britain at Stožice Arena at 8 PM. "The captain, Luka Dončić, will also play in the match!" Before suffering his injury scare on Saturday, Doncic had poured in 26 points and five assists in the first half of that contest versus Latvia. After Tuesday, Slovenia will have one more friendly on Thursday against Serbia. It will then kick off its official EuroBasket schedule on Aug. 28 by taking on Poland.
