Major attack on I-Day thwarted in Tripura as police arrest 2 with explosives
Acting on a tip-off, a vehicle was intercepted at Vanghmun in North Tripura on Thursday evening, they said.
Two suspected members of the Tripura United National Force (TUNF), a newly-formed outfit, were arrested from the vehicle with 14 electric detonators and neogel explosives, SP Avinash Kumar Rai told PTI.
Those arrested were identified as Dhananjoy Reang of Katlichhera in Assam and Sadai Nanda Reang of Kasko in Damchhera in North Tripura, he said.
'Preliminary enquiry suggests they had hatched a conspiracy to destabilise the state, with intent to kill police personnel, damage police vehicles, snatch arms and ammunition in the run up to Independence Day celebrations to grab the attention of the public," Rai said.

Sikh sarpanch denied entry to Red Fort on Independence Day over kirpan
Chandigarh, August 17 (UNI) A Sikh sarpanch from Nabha block in Punjab, invited to Delhi for the Independence Day celebrations, was denied entry to the Red Fort on August 15 for carrying a kirpan, a ceremonial dagger integral to the Sikh faith. Gurdyan Singh, an Amritdhari Sikh and sarpanch of Kalsana village, was among those honoured by the Jal Shakti Ministry for exemplary work in sanitation, including setting up solid and water treatment plants and public sanitation facilities in his village. Despite being invited as a VIP to witness the Independence Day parade, Singh was stopped at Gate 5 of the Red Fort by security personnel who cited restrictions on carrying the kirpan. Singh explained the religious significance of the kirpan, one of the five Sikh articles of faith (Kakars), but was told he could leave it outside and retrieve it later. Stating that his religion does not permit removing the kirpan, Singh chose not to enter. Instead, he briefly watched the parade from the general gallery with the public. Singh arrived in Delhi on August 13. On the day of the event, he reached the Red Fort metro station by 5 a.m. to avoid delays, but his efforts were met with refusal from security officials. Drive to clear 175 bighas of grazing land begins in Biswanath
1 2 Guwahati: An eviction drive began in Assam's Biswanath district on Sunday to clear 175 bighas of Village Grazing Land (VGR), which had been encroached by over 300 families, officials said. A senior official from the district administration said the land in question was located at Japariguri village in Biswanath, before adding that the drive has been proceeding peacefully, so far. The officer further said notices were served to the families on August 1 to vacate the areas within 15 days, which they have already done. Moreover, the officer mentioned that a few of the families dismantled their houses and took away the roof tin sheets along with their belongings. "The remaining houses have been demolished amid tight security deployment," the officer said, adding that about 600 police and CRPF personnel were deployed for the drive. Earlier, during his Independence Day speech, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had said "aggression" had changed the demography of lower and central Assam, and now similar efforts were being made in upper and north Assam as well. However, the counsels of the appellants, as well as the state, requested the court to re-notify the hearing, and accordingly, the court has listed the matter for hearing on Monday. During the hearing of the appeal, Advocate General D Saikia submitted before the court that approximately 29 lakh bighas of land in reserved forests across Assam have been affected by encroachments, and that the state's ongoing eviction drive has already cleared over 1 lakh bighas. 2 teachers suspended after kids recite Fatiha at school assembly
Guwahati: Two teachers in lower Assam's Bongaigaon district were suspended after it was found that students at their govt school were reciting the Fatiha (first chapter of the Quran) every day during the morning assembly. The video that created controversy went viral on Friday, when Independence Day was being celebrated. The headteacher of the school, Jeherul Islam, and the CRCC (cluster resource centre coordinator) for the school, Nirmal Kumar Choudhury, have been suspended, officials said on Sunday. As per the govt-recommended list, no religious verse can be chanted in the state's govt schools during assembly, officials said. According to initial reports, the students of the No. 619 Pacchim Bhadragaon Lower Primary School recited Surah Fatiha instead of the national anthem on Independence Day. However, district authorities and education department conducted a verification at the school campus, and it was revealed that the incident took place on Aug 8. "It was only on Aug 15 that a teacher, who was transferred from that school recently, circulated the video showing school children reciting the Fatiha. Reciting any such religious verse is not allowed at govt schools. That is why two teachers were suspended on Saturday," Bongaigaon district elementary education officer Pallabi Medhi said. The school is located in a Muslim-majority area in Bongaigaon, and most of the students are from the minority community. Sources said although Choudhury was not directly involved in the incident, the headteacher was blamed by educational department officials for the misconduct. "Fatiha was being recited by the students for a long time in the middle of the morning assembly," an education department official said. The teacher admitted to sharing the video without considering the repercussions. "She recorded the video before she was transferred, but it went viral after she was released," the official said.
