Drive to clear 175 bighas of grazing land begins in Biswanath
2
Guwahati: An eviction drive began in Assam's Biswanath district on Sunday to clear 175 bighas of Village Grazing Land (VGR), which had been encroached by over 300 families, officials said.
A senior official from the district administration said the land in question was located at Japariguri village in Biswanath, before adding that the drive has been proceeding peacefully, so far.
The officer further said notices were served to the families on August 1 to vacate the areas within 15 days, which they have already done. Moreover, the officer mentioned that a few of the families dismantled their houses and took away the roof tin sheets along with their belongings.
"The remaining houses have been demolished amid tight security deployment," the officer said, adding that about 600 police and CRPF personnel were deployed for the drive.
Earlier, during his Independence Day speech, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had said "aggression" had changed the demography of lower and central Assam, and now similar efforts were being made in upper and north Assam as well.
Meanwhile, 74 families of Doyang reserve forest and South Nambor reserved forest in Golaghat district had approached the Gauhati high court, claiming land rights and challenging the eviction notice.

A division bench of the court on August 5 had granted the appellants a 10-day window, until August 14, to either submit proof of land allocation or vacate the area.
However, the counsels of the appellants, as well as the state, requested the court to re-notify the hearing, and accordingly, the court has listed the matter for hearing on Monday. During the hearing of the appeal, Advocate General D Saikia submitted before the court that approximately 29 lakh bighas of land in reserved forests across Assam have been affected by encroachments, and that the state's ongoing eviction drive has already cleared over 1 lakh bighas.

Tensions flare in Indore after temple statues vandalised & thrown into Kanh river
Indore: Tensions prevailed near Sanjay Bridge in Indore after statues from a temple on the banks of the Kanh river were found uprooted and thrown into the water. The incident came to light on Saturday morning when locals arrived at the temple and found the statues missing. Upon learning of the incident, Bajrang Dal activists and locals began a search in the river, where they managed to retrieve some of the vandalised statues. The recovered statues were washed and cleaned by the community members. Following the discovery, the activists proceeded to Kotwali police station to demand that an FIR be registered. The protesters' anger was fuelled by the fact that this was not the first time the temple was targeted. Just a day earlier, on Friday, a similar incident occurred at a Lord Shiva temple on the banks of the river, where cattle remains were allegedly found. Kotwali station house officer Ravindra Parashar assured the protesters that the culprits would be apprehended within a week. The police have taken an application regarding the statues being thrown into the river and have launched an investigation. The repeated incidents of vandalism at the temple have left the local community deeply angered, demanding immediate action from the authorities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "We have registered a case under section 299 (which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 331 (1) of BNS (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking). Ludhiana police civil department clerk conned in NRI marriage cyber scam.
Ludhiana: A Punjab Police civil department employee lost nearly ₹79 lakh after being tricked by a cyber fraudster who posed as an NRI suitor and proposed marriage, authorities said. Amarjit Kaur, a clerk posted at the DIG Ludhiana range office and resident of Pamal village, filed a complaint after realising she had been defrauded. She had advertised for marriage when a man claiming to be from England contacted her over WhatsApp, police said. According to her statement, the man introduced her to a woman posing as his mother and another as his sister to gain her trust. He later told her he was sending an expensive "shagun" gift that had been stopped at customs, demanding repeated payments to secure its release. Investigators said Kaur deposited funds five times, totalling ₹79 lakh, through accounts provided by the accused. When the man's phone was later switched off and no gift arrived, she reported the fraud to SSP Ludhiana Rural Ankur Gupta. The cyber crime police station has registered a case against unknown persons. ASI Jagroop Singh, the investigating officer, said efforts are underway to trace the bank accounts used in the scam. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Police identify suspect in Ludhiana's Model Town Independence-Day snatching.
Ludhiana: Police on Friday identified the man accused of attacking a 55-year-old woman and dragging her behind his scooter in a street snatching on Independence Day at an upscale location, saying he is a repeat offender who was released from jail on bail less than three months ago. The suspect, a resident of Tajpur Road whose name has not been disclosed, already faces two snatching cases and was granted bail on May 28. Investigators also revealed the red scooter used in the crime had been stolen from the Tajpur area a week earlier. The attack, captured on CCTV, took place Thursday afternoon in the city's Model Town area. The victim, Alka Malhotra, wife of a businessman, was returning from a market near Dugri Road when a masked man attempted to snatch her purse just 10 m from her home. Footage shows Malhotra being shoved to the ground, her face striking the road, before the assailant fled. He soon returned, grabbed the purse, and escaped. Malhotra's son later alleged the thief also stole a diamond bangle from her wrist. She remains in a private hospital with head injuries and two lost teeth. Police said the suspect abandoned the scooter at Ludhiana Railway Station and was later caught on CCTV walking towards Kesarganj Mandi. "Teams are on his trail and he will be arrested soon," an officer said. MSID:: 123346065 413 | Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
