Theater Employees Share Unhinged Moviegoer Stories

Buzz Feed4 days ago
Nicole Kidman once said, "We come to theaters to laugh, to cry, to care..." Well, it seems some people go to movie theaters to act COMPLETELY unhinged. While some might think that a bad shift at a movie theater would consist of a few popcorn spills, that couldn't be further from the truth...
That's why when TikTok user @sophiecc04 said, "I'm bored, calling all movie theatre workers, give me the tea. I'm not talking 'a guest threw popcorn at me,' I'm talking TEA," both current and former movie theater employees shared their worst interactions with downright unhinged moviegoers. So, without further ado, grab your popcorn and read these 21 WILD theater encounters:
"We once showed an ultra-religious movie, where at the end of, the film's creator came on screen and told the audience that there are people all around them who are possessed by the devil and that it's their responsibility to save them."
"This led to around 20 people gathering in a circle by the screen and our lobby to start performing exorcisms. We had to kick them out."—esmerld.chvez
"I worked the 50 Shades Darker premiere weekend. We found HUNDREDS of dollars worth of sex toys in the theater. Some people even came back to request them!"
"My boyfriend was tipped $100 to let a man inside to see if his wife was cheating (she was)."
"I worked at a theater when Sausage Party came out, and our managers would stand at the door telling people, specifically parents with young children, that the movie was rated R and they would NOT be refunding tickets for this movie after people entered the theater."
"The number of angry parents who left within the first ten minutes after insisting it was just a cartoon was hilarious."—archeuswinterston
"When Twilight: Eclipse was released, we had a girl buy her ticket, walk to the emergency exit at the end of the hall, and prop it open with a broom."
"We saw a kid take a popcorn bucket out of the trash and try to use it to get a refill. About a week later, he won prom king, and his picture was in the paper, so we printed it out, put it on a 'wanted' poster, hung it up, and told everyone to never let him get refills."
"One of my old coworkers became a manager, and she was dating the dishwasher guy. One day, she was closing, and she sneaked him in through one of the theater exits. They climbed into the vents and tried to get into the main office to the vault to steal all the credit cards and cash."
"They fell through the ceiling in one of the theaters that had a movie playing. Cops got called, and they were both arrested. Turns out they only worked there to try and rob it. They ended up with restraining orders on all theaters."—t.bull.31
"A lady went into the theater, totally normal. A few minutes later, she came out, walked all the way from the end of the building, and out the front doors, trailing DIARRHEA on the floor behind her."
"The theater I used to work at always had this one moviegoer who would bring in multiple cans of sardines and leave the bones behind. 'Someone' (definitely not me) found her car and threw all the collected bones in the gas tank."
"I worked at a movie theater when The Force Awakens was released. A GROWN man asked us for a refund because Han Solo died."
"He said that he 'saw his ticket as an investment in Disney's new films and he was not interested in them without Han.' I had to explain that we're not responsible for the plot of the films."—devinkberry
"A problematic regular of ours once had a popcorn kernel stuck in his teeth and asked for a toothpick. We told him we didn't carry any, so he proceeded to use a rewards card at guest services and a mini poster to pick his teeth directly in front of us. He then put those items back where he found them. We, of course, had to throw them away. I've never been so appalled."
"We had a pregnant woman discover her boyfriend was cheating on her during Minecraft. She came bursting out of the theater and asked, 'Where did the guy in the white shirt go?' We all pointed to the family bathroom."
"It was the opening night of Sonic the Hedgehog in 2020. As you can imagine, we had several parties of kids coming in. After one of the first showings, I went in to do my job and clean up. I was about four rows in when I collected some mac and cheese bowls (it was a dine-in theater)."
"A few minutes later, I notice a horrendous smell coming from one of the bowls in the bus cart. I take a look and lo and behold…It's sh*t. Literal human sh*t that I picked up off the floor. I clocked out and went home."—angelina____
"Two ladies began arguing over seats in a fully open theater — they could've sat anywhere. Yet, they ended up getting into a fist fight. While the manager dealt with that, I had to watch their children and make sure they behaved. That's how I watched the Minecraft movie."
"We accidentally let a random man dressed like Michael Myers come in through the exit because we thought he was one of our boss's friends, who was supposed to scare the audience after a screening of Halloween."
"There are many stories I can tell, but nothing beats the Coco era, when an entitled mom stood in the theater that we were in the middle of cleaning, post-show, and watched us with arms crossed, complaining to my manager because I told her to please wait outside with everyone else in the designated line. She was yelling so loudly that all eyes were on her. Needless to say, she got herself and her family escorted out of seeing the next showing."
—sylentnights
"A new hire made two teen boys clean the entire theater with brooms and dustpans because she saw them throwing popcorn."
"When we got the cardboard standee for Detective Pikachu, someone stole it, so we posted about it on our Facebook page."
"I saw a woman sitting out in the hallway with bags next to her. She was obviously sad, so I sat down next to her and asked her what had happened. She told me that she had come to see a movie with her boyfriend (they had been arguing). During the movie, he gave her the rest of her things from his place as a way of telling her that their relationship was officially over."
"She told me that he was still in the theater watching the movie and that she was debating whether or not to go back in there and be with him.I said he sounded like he was the WORST and told her that she didn't have to go back in to watch the movie with him. Well, she went back, and two hours later, they walked out together, laughing and kissing."—thechillisgone
"This was when Hustlers hit theaters: The last lady I sold a ticket to for a showing was wearing a romper. Once the credits were rolling and people were starting to leave, I decided I would go ahead and start cleaning the theater before the next showing."
And finally, a wholesome, yet still slightly unhinged moment: "A guy ordered Papa John's and had it brought to the theater. When he went outside to collect it, I had to stop him and say, 'Hey, we really don't allow outside food.'"
"He responded with, 'Yeah, I know, that's why I got two extra pizzas for you all.' He proceeded to hand me two pizzas for the employees to share. He then asked if he was good to return to his movie with the food, and I asked if he needed any free cups for drinks. One of my greatest customer interactions."—yaboycampbellg

Cooked: Celebrated Chef exits new venture after allegedly balking at free food for influencer because she wasn't famous enough

A prominent San Francisco chef threw in the apron at his newly opened cafe after allegedly belittling a TikTok influencer during a tense exchange over her follower count aired out in a viral video. The incident unfolded Wednesday at Kis Cafe in Hayes Valley, when 'micro-influencer' @itskarlabb described how she had pre-arranged a collab with the restaurant's team and showed up early to film content, according to a video she posted to her platform. 3 Influencer @itskarlabb was allegedly belittled by top chef Luke Sung over her supposedly low follower count, leaving her running from his new California restaurant in tears. itskarlabb/tiktok The influencer, known as Karla, claimed that a man — later identified as celebrated James Beard Award-nominated chef and co-owner Luke Sung — questioned her 15,000-follower count and told staff it was a 'mistake' to invite an influencer so small. 'I know they're talking about me, because I can hear them saying 'TikTok, views, followers' ,' she said in a later video, which has racked up more than 20 million views. The influencer said that when she introduced herself, Sung grilled her over whether she had researched the restaurant, a wine bar serving small bites. She insisted she knew the menu and the vibe, but Sung disagreed and began scrolling through her TikTok feed at full volume within earshot, the influencer said. 'After scrolling like, two times, he says to me that he doesn't think my videos are at the level which he wants his restaurant represented,' she recalled. 'It seemed like he was insinuating that my followers would not be able to afford to eat at this restaurant.' 3 Sung couldn't take the heat after the pair's alleged exchange went viral and left his new venture. San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images Sung then reportedly asked, 'Do you know who I am?' and told Karla he was a two-time James Beard Award finalist and that his daughter is Big Apple vlogger, Isa Sung, who has 600,000 TikTok followers. He also dismissed the influencer's cooking videos she posted to her platform, dissing them as 'homey,' Karla said. The belittling exchange left her in tears, she said. 'I told him I felt disrespected and didn't want to collaborate anymore,' the influencer said. Karla's follower count has since skyrocketed to more than 350,000 since she shared the story on TikTok. The influencer said she wants to 'be an advocate for micro influencers' who don't receive as many handouts. 'You don't need to have a million followers to be respected or feel like you're making a difference,' she said. 3 Kis Cafe, which opened in May, announced that Sung had left as chef and co-owner. FOX By Friday, Kis Cafe's was getting cooked on Yelp, where its rating plunged from four to five stars to just over two stars, and reviews for 'Isa '– a 'pioneering' Cal-French restaurant that Sung previously opened and named after his influencer daughter — grew with haters lambasting the chef for his behavior. Kis Cafe, which opened in May, soon announced that Sung had left as a chef and co-owner, later clarifying he had done so of his 'own accord' and was not technically fired. 'Our chef's behavior was unacceptable, and he is no longer a part of the team,' Kis Cafe wrote in an Instagram post Thursday. The restaurant said it has now temporarily closed to 'restructure.' 'We want to create a space that's welcoming and respectful to everyone. In this instance, we failed to do so,' Kis Cafe said in a statement.

See the Destiny's Child Reunion at Beyoncé's Final Cowboy Carter Show

THE RUNDOWN On Saturday night, Beyoncé thrilled fans on her final Cowboy Carter tour stop when she invited Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams on stage to reunite Destiny's Child for the first time in seven years. Fans shared footage from the moment on TikTok, which shows Beyoncé welcoming her colleagues to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as their song 'Independent Women' played. The Renaissance singer called out, 'Destiny's Child, bitch!' The famous trio performed a medley that included 'Lose My Breath,' 'Say My Name,' and 'Soldier.' Rowland and Williams also joined Beyoncé for her 2022 song 'Energy,' finishing with her famous 'mute challenge.' As it finished, Beyoncé sang, 'Look around, it's me and my crew. Big energy!' The reunion ended with the massive 2001 hit 'Bootylicious,' before Beyoncé hugged Williams and Rowland and then waved them offstage, telling the crowd, 'Give it up for Destiny's Child!' Beyoncé welcomed a few other guests for her final Cowboy Carter tour stop, including her husband, Jay-Z, and country music star Shaboozey. She and Destiny's Child were last seen together when Beyoncé headlined Coachella in April 2018. The star shared a picture with her friends on stage from the night in which they're all wearing variations on a gold ensemble, including fringed and shimmering gold chaps. In the image, Beyoncé is smiling widely as Williams leans in to give her a kiss on the cheek and they have their arms around one another. The group rose to prominence in the 1990s and originally had four members: Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett. The group transformed into the better known trio including Williams, but then disbanded in 2006. They have remained supportive friends and fans have been hoping to see them reunite for years.

Julia Garner spills on Silver Surfer secrets: 'I never looked so cool'

Julia Garner is enjoying her chrome era. There was instant fan love when Garner's Silver Surfer first appeared in a trailer for Marvel's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' (in theaters now). Since then, the character has inspired Instagram cosplayers as well as TikTokers meme-ing her in-movie message, heralding the coming of planet-devouring Galactus. 'I don't have a TikTok,' Garner says. 'People have been talking about TikTok. They're like, 'Did you know that this was going to be a thing on TikTok?' I'm like, no. I'm in disbelief that people even know me.' Playing the silver alien Shalla-Bal, though, 'I never looked so cool in my life,' Garner adds with a laugh. 'This looks almost like a Met Gala look or some high fashion thing.' Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox Being in a Marvel movie is a departure for Garner, who won three Emmys for her role in the Netflix drama 'Ozark.' But she gets one heck of an entrance: In the retrofuturistic 1960s setting of 'Fantastic Four,' Shalla-Bal arrives in Times Square on a spiffy surfboard to warn that Earth is 'marked for death' and Galactus (Ralph Ineson) is on the way. Since she's the one who identifies the planets that will be her boss' next meal, Shalla-Bal has a 'toxic relationship' with Galactus. 'There's no HR,' Garner quips. However, her connection with Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), the Human Torch and youngest Fantastic Four member, is one that's actually meaningful to her. 'She finds him amusing, but she doesn't really want to show him. Secretly, I think she likes the attention.' Garner, 31, who says she puts 'love, rage and secrets' in every role she plays, did a deep dive into Shalla-Bal's comic-book history. In Marvel lore, she was the lover of Norrin Radd, and when he agreed to be Galactus' herald (and the original Silver Surfer) to spare their planet Zenn-La, they were separated. The actress was most surprised by 'actually how tragic her story is. If this was a human, you would be like, it's devastating. So that really resonated with me and helped ground it.' One thing she didn't find going down that geeky rabbit hole: Her character inspiring the 1989 Joe Satriani guitar track 'Back to Shalla-Bal.' In 2007's 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,' Doug Jones played the Radd version of the Surfer. But director Matt Shakman wanted to use Shalla-Bal instead because 'First Steps' was a different universe than fans have seen – it takes place on Earth-828, as opposed to the MCU's Earth-616 – and that choice made for a 'really interesting story line' with Johnny. A lot of attention was paid to how the computer-generated Shalla-Bal would appear. Garner portrayed the Surfer via a motion-capture suit and a helmet with a GoPro-type camera attached, and it was important to Shakman that Shalla-Bal was shiny and 'completely reflective' but still 'emotionally powerful,' he says. Another fun fact: Copper veining was added to the Surfer's facade. 'There's a sense of old weathered metal in places, just this idea that she's been doing this a long time and she's gone through some pretty inhospitable environments. So there's a touch of history to her.' Shakman also hooked Garner up with surfing adviser Tehillah McGuinness to guide her with Shalla-Bal's movement. 'She surfs a neutron star. She surfs a wormhole, she surfs real water, she surfs lava. There's a lot of great ways to make use of her Surfer-ness in the movie,' the director says. With McGuinness' help, Garner learned how to feel comfortable and balanced on the board, 'and not look clumsy, like you're in control,' she adds. Garner, who next stars in the horror film "Weapons" (in theaters Aug 8), found ways to add her own secret sauce to the Silver Surfer. For the opening message to humanity, she studied how T.S. Eliot would read his own poetry. 'It was very eerie in a way but also comforting at the same time,' she says. To get in Shalla-Bal's mindset before takes, she'd listen to spacey '70s krautrock music ('I just imagined that that's what she would be surfing to') and also learned to speak her character's fictional native tongue, Zenn-Lavian. 'It's not as hard as you would think. It's not like learning Japanese or something,' Garner laughs. 'Would I want a monologue in Zenn-Lavian? No. But I can say a few lines.' And while Garner became the Silver Surfer, she hasn't tried out her newfound board skills in real life. Nor will she. 'The water that I enjoy is that kiddie water that doesn't have any sort of wave,' she says with a smile. 'I'm quite scared of waves.'
