TomTom lifts floor of 2025 guidance as automotive sales drive Q2 beat

CNA15-07-2025
Dutch digital mapping specialist TomTom lifted the bottom end of its 2025 revenue guidance on Tuesday, after a better than expected performance in its core automotive business helped it beat market estimates in the second quarter.
The location data pioneer, which started by providing a navigational tool for turn-by-turn directions, has gone through major restructuring and is now developing high-definition self-driving maps that integrate consumer data and advanced driver assistance systems.
The Amsterdam-based company expects its revenue to come between 535 million and 565 million euros ($624.72 million and $659.75 million) this year, compared with the previous forecast of 505-565 million euros.
TomTom's revenue fell 4 per cent to 146.2 million euros in the second quarter, but beat the 145 million euros analysts had expected in a company-provided consensus, aided by a smaller than expected drop in the automotive location technology business.
CEO Harold Goddijn said in a statement the automotive business continued to battle industry uncertainties in the quarter, while underlying growth in location tech for enterprises was more than offset by unfavourable exchange rate movements.
"We remain confident about our market position," he added, however. "In the second quarter, our maps were selected to support complex field service operations, optimize logistics, improve infrastructure investments, and more."
The group expects its location technology revenue, which includes the automotive and enterprise businesses, to be in a 465-490 million euro range in 2025, versus an earlier forecast of 440-490 million euros.
It sees a free cash flow at around 5 per cent of the group revenue, after previously guiding it at break-even.

French firm teams up with JetZero on hydrogen-powered flight

PARIS :A French technology startup unveiled plans on Wednesday to work with clean-aircraft venture JetZero to explore a potential hydrogen-powered variant of its futuristic all-wing design. The move by SHZ Advanced Technologies is likely to rekindle a debate over the potential for zero-emission flight, six months after Europe's Airbus put the brakes on plans to develop the world's first hydrogen-powered airliner. California-based JetZero aims to challenge the traditional duopoly of Airbus and Boeing by developing a so-called blended wing-body aircraft, which it claims will be able to cut fuel consumption - and therefore carbon emissions - in half. JetZero and SHZ now plan to work together under a NASA research programme to design systems capable of storing and distributing liquid hydrogen fuel, which could eliminate carbon emissions altogether and evolve into a variant of JetZero's Z4. Hydrogen is prized for its carbon-free emissions and high energy related to mass, which makes it lighter than normal fuel. However, it also takes up much more volume and must be cooled to -253 degrees Celsius, making storage a significant challenge. JetZero's blended wing-body design features a V-shaped fuselage that acts as a wing and reduces friction in the air, rather than the familiar wings and cylindrical fuselage. "Due to the wider fuselage, the airframe is far more compatible with (liquid hydrogen) fuel tanks without sacrificing passenger seating, as a 'tube and wing' airplane would," SHZ Advanced Technologies said on Wednesday. Airbus said in February it was slowing down efforts to produce a hydrogen-powered regional plane and dropped a target date of 2035, blaming a lack of supporting infrastructure. Boeing, by contrast, has been cool on the commercial viability of hydrogen flight altogether. The concept of a blended wing-body design has been around since the 1940s and led to the U.S. B-2 bomber, as well as the X-48 research project between Boeing and NASA some 18 years ago. JetZero is revisiting such designs as the aviation industry struggles to meet a target of net-zero emissions by 2050. Airbus has argued that combining such radical changes to the shape of a plane with an entirely new propulsion system would be too ambitious, and is focusing instead on hydrogen-based fuel cells inside a normal tubular aircraft configuration. But SHZ Advanced Technologies' co-founder Eric Schulz - a former senior executive at Rolls-Royce and Airbus - said JetZero would approach the task in two phases with the initial focus on a conventionally powered all-wing plane. Any hydrogen-based variant would come in a second step, he told Reuters. The French firm says it has developed hydrogen tanks that save space by avoiding the usual cylindrical shape needed for pressurised vessels and can fit more easily into the flowing contours of the Z4's fuselage. JetZero, whose backers include United Airlines, said in June it was on track to fly a full-scale prototype of the revolutionary 250-passenger airplane in 2027.

Prosus says quarterly profit rises 54%, plans $2 billion in asset sales

JOHANNESBURG :Dutch technology investor Prosus plans to raise $2 billion through asset sales in the near term, the company's CEO said on Wednesday as he announced a 54 per cent increase in quarterly earnings. Amsterdam-headquartered Prosus, which is majority-owned by South Africa's Naspers and focused on food and lifestyle-ecommerce within its key markets of Latin America, India and Europe, has already raised $780 million from asset sales in the last four months to July. In a shareholder letter covering the annual general meeting and sent to media, Chief Executive Fabricio Bloisi said asset sales to date showed "our commitment to disciplined capital allocation" and set $2 billion as a near-term target. Bloisi also said the company's ecommerce adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (aEBITDA) rose 54 per cent to $237 million in the quarter ending June 30, at the top end of the group's guidance.

Analog Devices forecasts upbeat results on strong industrial demand

Analog Devices forecast fourth-quarter revenue above analysts' expectations on Wednesday, as the company anticipates stable demand for its products despite tariff uncertainty. The chipmaker has benefited from increased demand in its industrial segment, resulting in healthy bookings trends and growth in its order backlog, as manufacturers pulled forward shipments amid shifting U.S. tariff policies. Shares of the Wilmington, Massachusetts-based company rose about 4 per cent in premarket trading. The company forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $3.00 billion, plus or minus $100 million, above analysts' estimates of $2.82 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. On an adjusted basis, the company expects fourth-quarter, profit per share to be $2.22, plus or minus 10 cents, above analysts' estimates of $2.03. "We closed the third quarter with continued backlog growth and healthy bookings trends, notably in the Industrial end market," said CEO Vincent Roche. Industrial revenue, which accounts for 45 per cent of the company's total sales, rose 23 per cent to $1.29 billion in the third quarter. The industrial segment focuses on providing advanced semiconductor solutions that power automation, sensing and control systems across various industries. Sales in the automotive segment grew 22 per cent to $850.6 million for the third quarter. The company posted third-quarter revenue of $2.88 billion, above analysts' estimates of $2.77 billion.
