Possible thunderstorm in Montreal could usher in cooler temps

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christinne Muschi A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the Montreal area, ushering cooler weather after days of scorching heat. If a storm hits, it is expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon or early evening. Environment Canada warns that 'conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. There is also a slight risk of a tornado.' The weather agency warns that nautical activities may be hazardous due to 'sudden, severe wind gusts over bodies of water.' It also warns there could be electrical outages. Weather will remain hot ahead of the possible storm. The federal agency says maximum temperatures of nearly 30 degrees Celsius are expected on Wednesday. Combined with high humidity, it will generate humidex values between 35 and 38. Later in the day, cooler, less humid air will slowly move in from the northwest, bringing an end to the heat wave. Starting Thursday, more seasonal high temperatures and lower humidity are expected, according to Environment Canada. Nights should also cool down. Numerous heat records have been broken in recent days in Quebec, as well as in Ontario and British Columbia, which is also experiencing a heat wave. One heat-related death has been reported to the Montreal Regional Public Health Department since the beginning of the extreme heat period. The drought accompanying this heat wave is also resulting in lower water levels in some rivers, leading to watering restrictions in some municipalities. - With files from The Canadian Press
