World Test Championship To Stay In England: ICC Awards Hosting Rights For 2027, 2029, 2031

India.com3 days ago
In a significant development that will shape the future of Test cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that England will continue to host the next three World Test Championship (WTC) Finals — in 2027, 2029, and 2031. This decision was announced following the ICC Annual Conference held in Singapore and solidifies England's position as the spiritual and strategic home of the marquee Test event.
Despite mounting interest from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to bring the final to Indian soil, the ICC has chosen to stay with the tried-and-tested formula, citing England's 'proven track record' and 'logistical advantages.'
Why England? A Proven Track Record and Global Appeal
The ECB's consistent success in organizing the WTC Finals in 2021 (Southampton), 2023 (The Oval), and 2025 (Lord's) heavily influenced the ICC's decision. Each of these finals drew strong international viewership and filled stadiums — even in England's absence as a finalist.
The recent 2025 final at Lord's saw South Africa break their ICC title drought in front of a packed crowd, adding a compelling narrative to the historic venue. With New Zealand and Australia defeating India in the first two finals, and South Africa besting Australia in the latest, the event has already begun crafting a legacy that appeals to fans worldwide.
Richard Gould, ECB CEO, said, 'We are absolutely delighted to have been entrusted with hosting the next three WTC Finals. The passion of English fans for Test cricket and the global audience's enthusiasm have made these finals a celebration of the game's purest format.'
India Misses Out: Political and Logistical Concerns
While India has the infrastructure and the appetite for big-ticket matches, the ICC appears to have weighed concerns over neutral venue advantages, political tensions, and uncertain crowd dynamics in case of India's absence from the final.
Sources indicate that discussions during the ICC Chief Executives' meeting in Zimbabwe earlier this year saw BCCI lobby for India to host a future WTC final. However, ongoing subcontinental tensions — particularly involving India and Pakistan — and fears of half-empty stadiums if India fails to qualify likely tipped the scales against the move.
Notably, Australian skipper Pat Cummins had earlier suggested that the defending champion should host the final — a proposal that, for now, remains unadopted.
ICC's Broader Vision: Inclusion, Reform, and Global Expansion
The Annual Conference wasn't just about venues. The ICC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting displaced Afghan women cricketers, in collaboration with the BCCI, ECB, and Cricket Australia. This initiative will see structured high-performance training and opportunities in major women's tournaments like the 2025 ODI World Cup in India and the 2026 T20 World Cup in England.
Additionally, the ICC has issued a three-month ultimatum to USA Cricket to implement governance reforms or face consequences. Meanwhile, France, Hong Kong, and Canada now have representatives on the ICC Chief Executives Committee, reflecting the governing body's push for wider inclusion.
In another milestone, the ICC welcomed Timor Leste and Zambia as new Associate Members, bringing the total membership to 110 — a testament to cricket's growing global footprint.

ACC meet in Dhaka: BCCI to attend virtually, Asia Cup venue to be decided

Asia Cup Trophy. (PIC - X) The impasse with regards to Asian Cricket Council (ACC) seemed to have been broken as the BCCI is all set to attend the meeting in Dhaka albeit virtually after initial threat of boycotting the event to be presided by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. The deadlock regarding the venue of Asia Cup T20, which BCCI is supposed to host, will certainly come up for discussion with UAE having grounds in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah emerging as a strong contender. The other country in line to host is Sri Lanka as India will not travel to Bangladesh. 'BCCI will be represented virtually by its vice-president Rajeev Shukla, who is the designated ACC board member. Since the venue with regards to Asia Cup needs to be zeroed in on, BCCI decided to attend the meeting virtually,' an ACC source told PTI. The BCCI, which has already put its Bangladesh tour in August on hold, had earlier asked the continental body to shift the venue. The Indian board is skeptical about travelling to the neighbouring nation due to political unrest and absence of a stable government. There was a possibility of BCCI, the Afghanistan Cricket Board and SLC boycotting the ACC meeting and without three permanent Test playing nations, there wouldn't have been a quorum and the meeting itself would have been deemed invalid.

Rishabh Pant retires hurt after Woakes' yorker crashes on to his foot

MANCHESTER: India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant retired hurt and went for scans after copping a blow on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off England pacer Chris Woakes on the opening day of the fourth Test here on Wednesday. Pant was batting on 37 off 48 balls at that time. The wicketkeeper-batter first received on-field medical attention but had to be moved out of the field in a golf cart labelled as an ambulance. "Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans from the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress," the BCCI said in statement after the end of the day's play. Blood was seen seeping off Pant's right foot, and the affected area had considerable swelling as well. More details of his latest injury are awaited. Woakes' full length ball crashed on to Pant's toe, and the England players went up in appeal for leg before. But a tiny inside edge on the review saved the day for Pant. This was the second injury for Pant in this series as he had bruised his finger while keeping during the third Test at the Lord's, which prevented him from guarding the stumps in England's second innings. India batter Sai Sudharsan, who hit his maiden Test fifty -- 61 -- on Wednesday said if Pant is ruled out of the series, the visitors will definitely face severe consequences. "Obviously, because he (Pant) was batting really well today as well. So, and plus we miss out, miss a batter if he doesn't come back again," Sudharsan said at the post-day press conference. "So, it will definitely have consequences. But at the same time, the batters who are batting right now and there are a few more all-rounders inside. So, we'll try and give our best and bat long so that we negotiate that loss very well." Dhruv Jurel had kept the wickets then as a substitute in the absence of Pant. In case Pant cannot keep wickets in this Test, then India can summon Jurel again for keeping but his effort at the Lord's was underwhelming as he conceded 26 byes in England's second innings. In the unfortunate eventuality of Pant getting ruled out of the remainder of the series, the management can request the services of Ishan Kishan, who recently played two County matches for Nottinghamshire. He was also a part of the India A squad that faced the England Lions ahead of the Test series, though the 26-year-old did not appear in any of the two matches. The think tank can also ask KL Rahul to keep wickets, but he has not done that duty since the tour of South Africa in the 2023-24 season.

His sudden exit has left India in a tricky spot. Speaking after stumps, Pant's teammate Sai Sudharsan admitted that the vice-captain's absence could hurt India's chances. 'He was in a lot of pain and is currently at the hospital undergoing scans. We'll probably get an update soon. If he doesn't return in this match, it's obviously a blow, but the other batters are ready to step up,' Sai Sudharsan said after the end of play on Day 1. Before Pant was injured, he forged a crucial partnership with Sudharsan to bring India out of a tough situation. After a solid opening stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul in the first session, India lost three wickets post-lunch. However, Sudharsan and Pant batted cautiously and helped India avoid another collapse. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Following Pant's departure, Ravindra Jadeja joined Sudharsan in the middle. However, Sudharsan couldn't stay for long and was dismissed by Ben Stokes for 61 off 151 balls. Shardul Thakur then came to the crease to see out the final few minutes of the day. He and Jadeja remained unbeaten on 19 each at stumps, with India at 264/4 in 83 overs.
